I need help quickly! And I'll get this out of the way first, I have next to no idea about setting up surround sound for anything let alone my PS3.

Today I bought myself one of those all in one Surround sound systems, its a Sony and it had the dvd player, 5 speakers and sub. I quite stupidly thought I'd be able to have surround sound on my PS3 all too easily. I got the dvd and speakers all hooked up, linked the dvd player to the TV via hdmi and it worked like a charm.

When I came to setting up the PS3 for surround sound I did a google search, and have subsequently found that I need to run an Optical audio cable from the Ps3 to the player. Unfortunately the Dvd player has no optical output, only video cord and one hdmi output.

Right now I havnt the slightest clue what to do and am having a bit of a crisis with this. Will I be able to use surround sound with my ps3 or is that not possible?

Also my tv is a 32' inch Samsung Lcd that has 3 Hdmi in's, and an optical audio out if that helps at all. Any help will be massively appreciated.

I would have thought the outputs on your surround system aren't really important. What input sockets does it have? My guess is that you need to run your optical audio output from your ps3 to the amp of your surround system. Need more details (model no.s etc to give you better advice).

No, you won't. HDMI carries stereo audio only, so you can get some Dolby Pro-Logic, which is 3.1. Take the surround system back.

I've had a similar discussion with a guy from work, and basically, for another 30% you can get a multi-input system that will be sonically far superior. Onkyo make good entry-level receivers which you can match with their speaker packages.

No, it doesn't. It supports up to 7.1. :) But I would still recommend a good multi-input setup. ;) :p

For PS3, HDMI is even better than the optical cable if you have a 7.1 setup, since the optical output is 5.1 max. See the PS3 manual for more info.

What is the model number for your new sony surround sound. If we could see the unit on a web page, and get a look of the back of it, it would make it much easier to give you an answer to your problem. All surround sound systems are not the same when it comes to hooking them up. If you give a model number, I'm sure you will get step by step instructions of exactly how to hook it up.

It looks like you might be screwed. If you can return it, you probably should. If you could post a budget of how much your willing to spend, we might be able to find you something that will do exactly what you want.

I really don't understand how there isn't an optical in for the receiver. I've haven't seen one in ten years that didn't have at least one optical in.

To be honest, if you do return it I wouldn't buy sony the next time. There are much better options then sony, and often they are cheaper then the sony products.

I guessed as much. I really should've researched this before, fair to say I feel a right idiot now.

The package was as I said before a Sony, and it's model is TZ200.
Here it is on Sony Australia's website: http://www.sony.com.au/product/dav-tz200

It says it has audio line in, what connection is it? If it's just a standard headphone jack sized plug you may be able to get away with an adapter like this.

I'm taking it back tomorrow, I think after this charade I'll hold onto my money until I'm dead certain of what I want to buy. Bought it more for impulse then reason.
Thanks everyone for the help. :)
