Hi all,

I had a launch 60GB PS3 that could do no wrong for almost three years and today when I went to turn it on, I got the YLOD (Yellow Light Of Death) and could not start it up. I tried removing and replacing the hard drive; no luck. So I ripped apart my PS3 to get GT5:P out of it (it was out of warranty already, no worries). So my dad graciously paid for my PS3 Slim and I am now wondering how I can get my GT5:P save off the old HDD and onto the new system. I really would rather not have to amass another 2M credits and all my cars again, especially since all I do now is race online, or offline at Daytona Road in-car with the engine basting through my stereo speakers (quite an experience).

Any thoughts? Thanks

Simple. Just throw the HDD into the slim, copy, and you're good to go. 👍

ok, but if I throw the 60GB into the slim, what is there to copy the gamesave to? I mean, the 120GB is out, therefore what will there be to copy it to?

XD

I totally overlooked that, many apologies. XD

Do you have a USB memory stick, if so, you can copy all of your files to that.

Yea, I finally got the screws off the old HDD cradle to put it in the new cradle and once I got it in there, I get a message saying "The PS3 cannot start properly. Connect media with 3.01 Update data located on it and press Start and Select at same time" So I'm in the process of downloading 3.01 to my Cruzer and hopefully it will start up.

OK, it found the update and it's doing it's thing but it says it has to format a partition on the HDD and all data "MAY" be erased. So basically I'm between a rock and a hard place on this one.

Chronos, I think I love you. Hope you're okay with that. Haha just kidding, but thank you, I would have never known there were gamesaves posted on here. And thanks for the info on the HDD. Never would have known that either.

As you have already found out. It is not posibel to take out the HDD from its cradle and then put it back in, without formating it again.

What you can do for the future is to always have and USB key set in your PS3 and regulary copy savegame data to it. So you will have backup of your saved data.

You can use a USB memory stick to transfer save games off the ps3, I don't know about the ps3 slim but I'd guess that if it has USB ports you should be able to transfer data onto the HDD using them

Backing up gamesaves is a very important issue for games that you put lots of time into, unfortunately since the introduction of trophies an increasing number of games are blocking this, the latest being NFS Shift.

I backed my PS3 onto a USB HDD the other day - when I upgraded to a 320 gig drive it was a simple process of backing up - then restoring - then adding back in the OS... (You did this step)

I guess your problem was - you couldn't get to your data because you'd YLOD'd... Very rubbish... I guess if you had've gone the official repair route then they'd've sorted that out for you though?!

Surprised you binned your launch model though - lots of people would've bought that off of you on Ebay... even in YLOD condition.

I got my use out of it. Bought it December 1st 2006 at a gamestop (lucky, I know), worked like a champ until yesterday, just stopped. I haven't trashed it, I just got my GT5:P disc out of the blu-ray drive so I could play it. If I feel like it I could put it back together and sell it, but I doubt it would be worth it. I wouldn't buy a launch PS3 just for the novelty of it if it wasn't working.

Okay yeti, I get it. I'm apparently stupid. haha. If I ever feel the need to put it all back together again, I will. But if you think about it, if the launch PS3s are going for that much now, if I hold onto it for another 10, 15 years, what will they be worth then?

Sorry - didn't mean to say that!!!

But I'd stick it back together and shove it on Ebay...

I would just like to say that the best way to avoid this kind of thing in the future a backup of your PS3 hard drive should be done regularly. I do it at least once a month. External USB HDDs are cheap enough now that you can buy one large enough to do this for the PS3 for fairly cheap.

A full HDD backup will actually get around the games that lock their game saves from copying.

Good advice FoolKiller, I'll look into that. But the only game I play right now is GT5:P so buying a hard drive just to back that up seems a bit like overkill. Plus, the USB drive works just fine with GT5:P, I know some games won't let you copy your gamesave to the flash drive though, so we'll see if it works with GT5 later this year. Wink. haha

And Yeti, I was just messin with ya, I know you weren't calling me stupid lol

IMHO copy protected save games can only be restored to the same unit, e.g. after an HDD upgrade, but not on other systems.

Developers need to get rid of those stupid protected save games. There are other ways to prevent things like trophy cheating.
