I remember when I first got my PS2, I would always play Grand Theft Auto III. But I would leave my PS2 on all night so I wouldn't have to boot the game back up in the morning. Then in the morning, I would turn the TV on, and my guy would be standing outside the hospital, ready to play. But this of course ruined my PS2 to the point where it wouldn't want to read games. My intitial solution was to smack the top of the console with my hand until it started working again, but then eventually, it stopped reading games all together. And worse yet, it would scratch up every game I put in it! So eventually, I called Sony Customer Support, told them of my situation. And they told my to send the PS2 up to them in Irvine, California. A week later, my PS2 arrived at my front door, and it worked like new! And the best part was that it had a barcode on the side with my first and last name under it, which I thought was pretty cool.
So, the morale of the story, call Sony.
Though I will admit, since you opened it up and tried to fix it yourself, they might have some policy that says they can't work on it now.
I should also mention that Sony didn't charge for anything even though it was my fault the console wasn't working. They didn't even charge to ship it back to me!
