Need help with finding a good server as a fileserver.

I like the HP ProLiant line, but they're expensive as hell. anyone know of any others that are decently priced, and have a decent amount of space ?(I can always swap in a new harddrive, anyway. if it starts with 500GB, I can always just switch in a 2TB drive in place of it)

Is this for business or home? How many users will there be? How much data will be stored? How often will the data be accessed?

Proliants are good, as are poweredge (Dell). You should really be looking into what you need in your server rather than the manufacturer (RAM, CPU, network connectivity etc), and what server OS you will be running.

Windows Server or just Windows7?

Windows server is seriously overkill for a home server. They actually have a home server OS. Another option would be Ubuntu Server. Quite tricky to use if you're not used to Linux but has the advantage that it's free.

However, if this server is soley going to be used for storing data/music/movies to access, then I'd just get a NAS. In fact, I am. On Monday when I get paid, i'm getting one of these, and then putting two of these in it. :)

running windows, just checking it every so often, for home, and medium amount of data stored.

Yep, just get a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device.

Mine is a Synology DS210j, with 2x 2TB Western Digital Green drives. It'll do everything you want, and possibly more.

myeh, I know how to run servers, and I'm NOT using it for music or movies. I might actually be running it as a private game server.

I'm actually thinking about a Dell PowerEdge R715.

Way too overkill! Do you have a server rack at home? A simple dual core machine with lots of ram will do just fine. Then you have to decide on what Server OS to use. I have actually been thinking of setting up a server to host MTA San Andreas games and MineCraft. The main limitation on these is bandwidth. If you are going to have lots of users connecting, you need a good speed line. The applications actually use very little resources on the server.

You guys got me to thinking, then to wanting, and yesterday I set up my new Synology DS211j with a pair of WD 2TB drives in a RAID 1 setup. Really nice system that so far is exceeding my expectations.

Yeah, I got my Netgear Stora and now watch movies from any device in the house. It's really handy!
