Hi

I am interested in buying a Hauppage HDPVR, so i can record gameplay from my PS3, however i have a quick question.

Here is home theatre setup that i have at the moment:
Yamaha RXV667 amplifier
5.1 Jamo A102 HCS5
Sony bravia TV
Playstation 3

I have a HDMI going from the PS3 straight to the Amplifier, which controls the Audio and visual of the PS3. There is no connection going from the PS3 to TV.

So is it possible to connect the HD PVR to the Amplifier using a component cable?
(the ampifier does have component ports at the back)

my expected setup is something like this:
Amplifier > HDPVR > PC

Would this work?

Thanks.

Heya,

That's a nice setup let me say 👍

So long as your set up looks like this:

So long as your Amp does Component out, you will be fine. In your case, you will use the Amp in place of the Gaming Console in the above pic. Usually people don't notice this unless you do a lot of video recordings, but the USB connection will have a ton of dropped frames. It won't affect playback in my opinion but there are those extreme videographers that have had a cow over such drawbacks when they ask me about equipment.

Thank you, my brother was the one who decided on the set up, i just helped fund it :sly:

So will i still need to connect the HDPVR to the TV? If so which components ports do i use on the HD PVR.

Thanks for your help

It's probable that your AV receiver will NOT convert the HDMI signal to component video. You'll need to use a PS3 component cable and run that to the HD PVR (including analog audio) and run a second component video cable to pass through from the HD PVR output to the TV. Then run an optical cable from the PS3 to to an optical input on the back of the receiver so you can still run surround sound. You'll need to change the output settings on the PS3 to component and audio to bitstream over optical. I think there's also a multi output audio feature that needs to be enabled somewhere in the XMB too.

I have thought about that too, first i'm going to try out the initial setup that i had in mind, like suggested in post 1, then after sampling a few videos and uploading them on youtube, i'll think about it.

Thanks for the help.

For that set up, yes, you will use the Component out cables from the HD PVR to the TV. But it really depends on what output your Amp does. If it doesn't do component out, then you may have to follow what 12th gear said, which does complicate things a little, but still very do-able 👍

You pay extra for less and all you get is a YPrPb cable.

I will be getting the normal one when I get extra cash.

Same here buddy, i'm waiting until my next pay slip, then i'll buy it. not long left now. :)

Reason I am saving for the normal one is I got a YPbPr cable for my PS2 a while back and it works on my PS3.

I see what you mean, there is no real point in buying the gaming edition.
