Basically connected my PS3 to my Surround Sound with an optical cable but I can't for the life of me get it working properly which is somewhat annoying me after having run out to get a cable.

It works on PS3 startup with the starting music thing, it works eventually on a long menu (menu clicks) and works on music. It doesn't work at all with GT or any other game, and I'm getting really at my wits end now. Anyone help please?

I think you need to put down more info, on what surround set / reciever you are using. and is it 7.1, or 5.1? what settings did you use in the PS3?
Did you google this already?

Got a Panasonic SA-PT470 surround system 5.1, on my sound settings gone Optical Digital > Dolby, DTS > Save

Tried Google, my problem is the sound sometimes works in the menu's, works on music but not on games at all.

Not a clue...lol. Dumb question, but are you sure you pushed the digital optical cable in all the way. They lightly snap in place when secured properly but can work intermittently if pushed in most, but not all the way.

It's also possible that the settings within GT5 need to be adjusted, not just on the XMB menu. I do remember in GT5 options there were sound settings for large theatre, small theatre, living room etc. so there may also be a setting for surround there, virtual surround, stereo etc. Check that out as well.

My optical cable goes to my tv and surround system. (no ps3 used)

Then I put DVD surround system in digital input mode. If your tv has an optical cable port, try it out.

I've never had a problem with mine, works fine every time.

I had a problem like this and its cause I tried hooking the optical through the PS3 to the surround sound reciever. Run from the TV to surround system. Which is commn sense and you might have had done all ready.

There shouldn't be any reason that you can't run your PS3 directly to your receiver...

What is your audio output settings on your PS3 set to?

I assume by this you mean you have an HDMI input from the PS3 to the TV, then a digital optical out from the TV to the receiver. That would work but still, there's no reason why hooking it up directly from the PS3 to the receiver shouldn't work. Something is wrong with the settings or the connection is faulty.

I have a HDMI cable from my PS3 to my TV and a optical cable from my PS3 to my receiver. If you do this you need to change a setting in the XMB to multiple audio outputs. Can't remember which setting or the correct terms but it should fix your issue.

Edit: go to settings - sound settings - audio multi-output and set the option to on.

👍

I never use the tv sound with my HDMI to the tv so I set mine to "Digital Optical" in the sound settings menu.
