I need help . I'm wondering why my computer won't let me put my AGP speed on 8x. I currently just got a 9800 PRO installed yesterday. You see, when you right click and click on properties then go to settings->then advanced, I clicked on SMARTGART(btw I have catylst 4.7) and i setted my video card on 8x, it said i should restart my computer, then i did. After restarting I checked if it was set to 8x. But it wasn't I'm wondering why it wont let me. And now when I right click , it takes a little while to bring up the menu, rather then instantly when you right click on your desktop :nervous: :grumpy:

Edit: ALso, I had just reformatted the computer because for some reason my computer would not start windows and would just restart itself. The AGP speed issue had only started after i reformatted it, everything was ok before the reformmatting and the windows Xp screwin up.
 
I would do a BIOS flash, hopefully with an upgraded BIOS. It sounds as though the mobo is rejecting the 8x AGP setting. That would explain the slow menu reaction time. Also, it wouldn't hurt to check and see if there are any new drivers for the Radeon, just in case.
 
well , the slow reaction time thingy has stopped and everything runs fine. BUT STIL!!! IT still rejects my 8x settings . And I downloaded the ATI catylst driver 4.7 right from ATI's site ATI.com. Does the AGP speed affect gaming(curious)? Cuz i played a far cry demo and it ran very good and fine, and cs. Anyhow . my computer is running fine, I JSUT DONT KNO WHY ITS REJECTING MY 8x.

Whats a BIOS FLash? :dunce:
 
Well, if you know what your mobo is, go to there website and see if there is any BIOS updates for your mobo. If there are, they might have instructions for this, but what you'll need to do is download the update patch, and put it onto a Floppy disk. Then restart your pc with it in, it should self-install, but if not there will be directions.

WARNING: You'll need to reformat in order for it to work.
 
:eek: That exact same thing is happening with me!!!! :eek: should I look on my motherboard site of CD for an updated Bios? How would I go bout installing it?
 
Your motherboard must support an 8X AGP bus. If it does not, it will go down to 4X or 2X (depending on your motherboard), even if the video card supports 8X.

It has nothing to do with your BIOS. If you do not know how to flash your BIOS, do not attempt it. Read the instructions on your motherboard manufacturer's website.

If only I saw this sooner... I used the auto-flash program on my CD and I did it and I got blue screens of death before loading windows... :( Format... :(
 
Did you install the chipset drivers from the ASUS CD? try that. It worked for me...
 
Whenever building a new computer, make sure the chipset drivers from the CD/site are installe d right after Windows finishes installing.

Im very sure that my motherbord supports 4x and 8x. ITS an ASUS P4C800-E DLX.

But does AGP speed affect gaming?

Have you gone into your BIOS and enabled AGP 8x?

Does AGP speed affect gaming? Depends on what type of game you're playing. If you're running CounterStrike, it really doesn't matter because the game just can't fill all the bandwidth. But, a game like Far Cry, it will certainly make a difference.
 
What Viper Zero said. 8x AGP is useless unless you are running an extremely graphically intense game ala Fary Cry, HL2, Doom 3 etc...
 
Heh funny tho. Because i just bought Doom 3 and the game runs perfectly! :) :dopey: . I'm right now playing at the 1024/760 resoultion with high settings. Kinda weird how not having 8x speed isnt affecting the game.
