Need major help with Rally in GT4 please...

I'll make try to make this quick and straight to the point, if this has been posted before my appolgizes..

I am having a extremely difficult time with Special conditions(Easy) in GT4.. Im using the Mitsubishi Lancer Tommy something edition(forgot the full title) and have all upgrades EXCEPT engine upgrades.. the car is at 310HP stock(if im not mistaken)... i even have a wing on it..

I was able to do the tarmac ones fairly easly but the dirt ones i found where difficult.. im not even going to get into the snow ones because for me those are IMPOSSIBLE..i will explain, My biggest biggest problems are/is:

1. penalties....why is it that when the AI car hits me i get a penatly for it? and sometimes i only SKIM the AI car and BOOM penatly...WTF is the deal lol..

2. physics.. i have to admit these are the most fakest unreal physics in rally i have EVER seen in!! OH BUT WAIT!! the AI cars exhibit completely different physics!? the AI cars never skid, never slide sideways and yet they maintain full tracktion on a perfect line WITHOUT going sideways at very high speeds, so i ask HOW in the hell am i suppose to match that? the answer is easy.. YOU CANT MATCH IT.. its beyond the games limit to drive the way the AI drives...

3. tuning... i have experiment and did 50 trial and error with my lancer changing different settings and seeing how it changes the car.. i am sad to report that THERE IS HARDLY a change if ANY at that.. i even set the toe to max one time.. another time i set the stablizers to max(7) at front and min(1) at rear and guess what.. it drove THE EXACT EXACT EXACT same way when i had it set to 4/4 and 1/7 and 7/7 and 1/1.. i was at a completely shock! when i found this out i started to do it with other stuff like camber and toe and STILL NOTHING!!! the car drove the same way ALWAYSSSSSS!! ...

So my question is.. how in the world am i suppose to beat something that is beyond completely UNFAIR!!!... i was only able to beat the AI after tons and tons of practice, but again im using a 310HP car against some cheap ass 120HP car..and yet the AI maintains its speed RIGHT behide me the entire way of the race! and im struggling to keep ahead of them... i find i have to slow down SOOOO MUCH to go around turns WITHOUT sliding sideways.. and when i apply some gas to try and speed up BOOM! its either oversteer beyond oversteer or i just go sideways hardcore!.. i really really dont understand these rules...

right now i am trying to do the snow course and i pretty much gave up.. its impossible to beat.. i need like a 450hp car just to beat this little toyota celica thats doing 40mph around these turns whereas if i try and do 40mph around the same turn I GO COMPLETELY SIDEWAYSSSSS ALLLL THE WAYYY.. how and why does the AI have soo amazing tracktion!

Relaaaaxx, relaaaxx...Welcome to GTP! 👍 , Here you'll find many sections and guides that will help you get through the game. An important step on getting the most help out of this site is using the SEARCH FUNCTION, don't be lazy and look for what you need.
As far as your question, there are many tips that can help you...one of them is to not rush to win, specially on Dirt and snow races, SLOW IN, FAST OUT just like in regular racing, try to slow down on corners and this will keep you from smashing in the walls and get the penalty, (although you can avoid the penalty by hitting the wall with the rear half of the car, however, the AI will make you get the penalty if you get on his way.:irked:
As far as cars, sell the Toyota thet you win at the second race, and you'll be able to buy a nice Impreza or Lancer or many, many other 4WD cars that if modded up, (if you don't care about a-spec points) will make you glide through the whole hall...

Don't worry so much about tunning the car, (if you mean suspension) and try to relax, because if you can't win the easy ones, you'll have trouble winning the last ones, since you have to run 5 laps each track:ouch:
just take it easy and you'll get used to it, do some practice and you'll see that like I said previously on another thread...SOMETIMES SLOWER IS FASTER ;)

EDIT: BTW here's what I was talking about

Ciao....

Throttle control is what you need, give gas little by little and dont just press it all the way down when you are exiting a turn. And one tip to prevent penalites, use the try to let the back of your car to hit the wall and not the front. Also try this: accelerate down the straight, then turn the steering wheel BEFORE you brake and that will help to get the car going sideways a little bit and helps to get the tail out, so it will hit the walls :sly:

Yup 👍 , true, but you know what? If you've done the IB, IA and S licenses, in order to get gold on dirt tracks, you actually have to hit the apex cleanly and avoid smashing the wall so much because once you hit it, wheels will spin to much and get you nowhere, thus more time wasted on each corner, just try to "take your time" and It will pay off.

This being said, HP is not a big factor here and even with a inferior car than the AI, you can still end-up with the trophy :sly: .

Ok man like OzzyGT said, chill out! 💡

Try using a car more even to the '80s cars and use them against your opponents instead of a suped-up Lancer or Impreza 💡. That will make it easier for you to be consistent and stay alert. When you get enough cash, get the Mitsubishi Evo. Super Rally Car (1,250,000 Cr.), and use that on the Normal and Hard races. It may be called the "Cheap Rally Car" by some people, but it gets the job done.👍

I had many of the same problems when I started out :ouch: but I got over them by TRIAL AND ERROR :banghead: (i see that you apparently got the error part down, now for the trial).

The dirt races need to be taken slower and use powerslides on really wide turns, like in Swiss Alps.

On Grand Canyon (my least favorite track 🤬 ) I just take it nice and slow, slow in slow out most of the time :grumpy: , then open up on the "straights".

On the Snow/Ice races, use the same rule as the dirt tracks and multiply it by 4 👎 . I feel your pain about them and the penalties, but you have to be more careful, especially on the Snow/Ice tracks.

remember that the dirt races are different from the snow races because the snow is sometimes deep and chunky or thin and slippery; the dirt is loose and uneven so you have to adapt

Just to ask, about how long have you had GT4? And did you have GT3 and do the rally races?

Try to use cleaner language too, this is supposed to be a family-friendly site.

Indeed it gets the job done but it is not cheap. :odd:

My suggestion regarding the comment above...

Buy the brand new, dealer purchased, Subaru Impreza Rally (the newest one).
It is totally worth it... Only 750,000 Cr and just as capable as any other rally car- the Impreza is a great choice.

Also, when it comes to rally... Not sure if anyone mentioned this but...

Try to use half throttle as much as possible.
Flooring it in a powerful rally will have you spinning wheels and thanks to the fact that you are on dirt you will not notice that your spinning instead of taking off like you should be. 👍

With that in mind, also try to learn technique before you max out your car's power potential.

Good luck to you.

Btw, did you search before posting this thread?
I imagine there is a rally thread already around here somewhere.

Ok I should have defined "Cheap Rally Car" better :dunce:

I meant it was "cheap" as in "unfair" i.e.:

Noob: OMG!! That was soo CHEAP!! H4X0r!! 🤬

Pro: Noob, i just used the Evo Super Rally Car:)

That should clear up my misdefinition.

Wait...Is misdefinition even a word? GWB moment right there...:dunce:

yes i keep hearing everybody saying great things about the Evo super rally car..

and yes i had GT3 and i excelled at Rally in it, my favorite car was the Evo Rally(non-prototype)..

i've been playing GT4 for hmm probably 2-2.5weeks... i only did the B and A license and im at about 27% ... i just recently decided to start doing the Easy special conditions... the snow one is the one that REALLY REALLY kills me... i only one once out of 20 times of trying and it was pure luck... i still have to do 3 more(2 tracks plus normal and rev)

i will keep updated and thanks for the tips.. oh and yes i just spotted that rally guide.. a must read but its late now and im tired lol.

Try using a short wheelbased car, like the Ford Focus or the Peugeot 206. The 206 got me through the Hard rallies with ease. No powerupgrades, just some minor fixes in the settings, and clean out the opposition!

When you drive, brake early - really early - and be gentle with the throttle at all times. Also make sure you pass your opponent at an early stage, since passing is hard. As long as he´s in front, he´ll be as fast or faster than you, but when overtaken, he´ll soon disappear from your rearview mirror.

wow.. well this is very interesting.. am i an idiot that i was playing Rally with tracktion control on Zero!?!?..

just now i decided to not tune the car but instead mess around with the TCS.. i set it at max 10 and the results where very interesting.. i found it easier to control and steer the car.. my lancer did not go all the way sideways during turns... i did the Tahiti maze course normal(if thats how its spell) NUMEROUS NUMEROUS TIMES with TCS0 then 5 then 10 and i managed to get a record time of something like 2:24:850.. with the TCS at 10... i would go against my ghost and see the comparison.. there where times that i would pass myself and vise-versa but when i set it back to Zero i found it easier to oversteer and i had a tendency to go sideways.. with TCS at 10 that problem went away alittle..

another very interesting thing, i went into the IB license and did only the 2 test that deal with Rally.. one was with the lancer Evo in the grand canyon stage the othe was driving on snow.. i hit gold on both of them!!.. not the first try but here is what i found very appealing.. the lancer Evo i think was VIII GSR(forgot what year) but anyway i was blow away at the handleing this car had.. i watched the demo over and over first with the display on and 3rd peson view like i normally drive.. the AI hit the first left turn at like 35mph and came out of it at like 50!!! i said to myself yea ok how the heck am i going to do that.. well i wass very shocked at how easy the car handled.. i braked and turn at the same time and maintained my drift and managed to get gold twice!!.. i think im going to have to make a investment on purchasing another car for Rally :(. though i love my Evo Tommy Edition, i put soo much money into that car already its beyond pointless to sell.. but in either case today i managed to kick some butt in both ice stages and won! i think the reason i won was the AIcar was not as tough as when i was going against the celica GTfour.. i went against the LancerGSR(very very old model) and it spinned out on the first turn that i gained the advantage then i just took it real slow the rest of the way LOL..

so now im off to Normal special conditions.. whewwww..

Hmmm curious! I thought TCS didn't work off road, as the littl light on the "dash" doesn't flash...:odd:

Don't worry, you're not the only one to have trouble with the off-road stuff. I had to make a conscious decision to approach it in the same way I approached the circuit races: if I couldn't get round the corner, I would brake earlier. Sounds simple, but you gotta put it into practice...

It's all part of the "slow in fast out" thang you'll hear a lot about. BTW always pay close attention to any corner that leads onto a long straight: you want to accelerate as much as possible through the corner in order to get onto that straight as fast as possible, to carry that speed (and gain time) all the way along that straight. But you can only do that if you go into the corner slower and fully able to apply full power. This applies to all types of circuit.

In rally, you don't need the most powerful car out there, it's all about handling the car. It's a hell of alot different than road racing, if that's what you are used to. GT4 rally is pretty crappy, but I've seen worse. All you gotta do, is let the tail come out, and it will help you make it through each turn. Learning how to handle the car in this situation helps. I found the rally was pretty easy actually, you gotta make sure you take the right line too, use all the track you get!!

Oh ya, and do chill out, it's just a game!

well good news is im getting the hang of rally(dirt)... one mistake i made that i just notice early on i purchases the "original" suspension.. bad mistake :( since it doesnt offer bound/rebound adjustments, just standard "shock absorbers".. so i had to ditch out the money and buy the full customize suspension.. i have the bound (F&R) at 6 and rebound(F&R) at 8 and works wonders..i also purchases afew extras like roll cage and refresh plan(since it was a used car)...

im still having the most hardest time on snow/ice but im going to take it little by little.. now that i have my IB im going to do all the IB rally(except snow lol) .. :)

i also took the liberty of upgrading my Subaru Impreza STI(forgot what year model).. im going to try this one out in rally(dirt) and see if its better then my Evo lancer.. its 378HP though so i need to unequip some engine stuff like racing muffer.. wish me luck

Liek I said, get the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. Super Rally Car. Its basically a Lancer Evo. VIII which everyone loves, except SUPER.

lol glad to help

hmm .. im gonna have to do that i suppose.. theres still no way im selling the Evo im using now, i only get like 3k for it(i brought it for like 10k i think?) but after putting tons of credits into it i guess i have no choice but to keep it and also get the other Evo's as well.. :).. i dont know what it is but for some odd reason i just dont like to have a ton of cars in my garage (30-60 is good lol)

whats a fast way to get cash?.. the only way i know and i sometimes do is i do the second race in the rally easy to get the toyota rally raid car and sell it for 250k or something like that.. i'll have to do it a bunch of times to get the super evo :( or i can just get the regular Lancer Evo rally, the one thats in GT3 you know(the non-prototype version).. thats the one i used for GT3 rally ALL the time! and i wouldnt mind having it again and its only 750k .hhmm

actually no, i havent even tried my impreza STI WRX or whatever it is.. i dont know the name or year for sure but it has a hood that looks like a supercharger.. its pretty awesome.. it handles fine on asphalt.. i used it for the boxer spirit race..

i havent yet tried it on dirt or snow but thats the first thing im gonna do tonite, i already brought all the upgrades i needed, it has too much HP though so im going to bring it down to about 310(current its over 375).

i was never a fan of the impreza rally car in GT3, i always prefered the handleing of the Lancer Evo Rally Car(non-prototype) but i will have to try it in GT4 since the physics are completely opposite of GT3 rally. theres so many freaking cars in this game sometimes i just get into a daze thinking of which ones i want LOL!!

You should find the WRX STi pretty damn useful for the rallies. I think i used the Spec-C one or something, it got me through all the easy and most of the normal rallies. It's got a tad more oversteer which helps initiate turns, but it also, IMO, has slightly more grip than the real rally cars. Definately worth the buy:tup:. And good luck with all the rallies!:)

Oh yeah baby.
Anyways, i can tell you that Rally is something I hate in GT4. GT3 was way better at Rally. The physics in general are just plain motherfreaking difficult in rally (Understand?). Powerslides; slow down and then start the powerslide, then full trottle the car if the turn is not very long. If its long, then use throttle control.

haleluya! finally, someone brought up a rally thread. I've been looking for one for ages. couldn't find squat.

i reccomend you KEEP the 400r when it comes up in the easys...as you'll need it for the hards. sell the RSC rally for cash

as for me: i've been stumped by the hards. I'm pulling off the hards by the skin of my teeth with a rally Ram (and saved the replay to prove it), but still getting my butt kicked on some courses when I try to use anything else: half a dozen or more tries in Tahiti maze. if I try a short wheelbase like a impreza or an evo, I just do 720's on dirt...or more. cool to watch, not cool to be stuck with. also have the same complaint as the noob about the overabundance of "love tap" penalties.

hope the old thread link you provided will help me earn the rally trophies LEGITEMATELY (i am currently bored to tears with GT4, as the only thing I got left to race is the 24 hr enduros) on my second save

one thing im doing is going to the dirt&snow courses and paying the 5credits to practice unlimited amount of time.. i race, exit and change settings, then try again...you only pay 5credits once...

i've done and sticking with the tahiti maza for my practicing of Dirt rally and so far i've think i mastered that stage(forwards that is).. i did 2:23:850 with my evo 2:22:060 with my new ford escort rally and a pretty surprized 2:19:330 with my impreza seda STI WRX... when it came to NORMAL on tahiti maza i destroyed the AI car by more then 7seconds lol.. im anxious to do it on HARD... i suggest practicing each stage VERY carefully and doing it many many times until you pretty much mastered it, keep the ghost on and at each lap try to beat yourself again.. you will be surprized... i myself have beaten myself so many times and it shocks me.. anyway i guranteed you when you go back into HARD on that course you will have the edge over the AI.. good luck!

I usually use one of the subaru models, depends on my mood. One thing i always do is alter the LSD. You can completely alter the way a car drives on a particular surface. My 03 impreza rally is imposible to drive on tarmac since it understeers so badly. However on dirt/gravel the understeer is used to counter the oversteer after i throw the car into a bend sideways. Also i use a much tighter rear dif on gravel hence the understeer again. This stops the wheels continuing to spin even in a straight line, and will help you get the power on faster after you "drifted" round an corner.
