Ok I'm a 11th grader and my parents said when I go to the 12th and if I get all A's any semester. They will buy me a camaro SS(most likely 2010 model), but I been thinking of asking them to buy me a Mazda rx-7(3rd gen), because I love Rotarary engines. And I was gonna ask you guys how much they cost used. I'm at school so I can't research yet. And how much does rigity restoration usually cost? And I was thinking a used rx7 cost 17k plus? If so I was gonna tweak it it to 400hp.

edit * I didn't know rigity wasn't real lol, why are people so mild manner these days atleast god is there for me, I go through things like this a lot*

What the hell is a Camaroo? Sounds Australian.

And rigidity restoration . Real life != Gran Turismo.

Just get some cheap and reliable until you lean how to drive. Once you are a better driver and don't have that invincible high school mentality then but something fast. You can still buy a cheap, fun, slow car that you won't kill yourself in. I suggest finding something like a Neon ACR which isn't fast but has a suspension built for autocross.

Good luck paying gas for either of those.

I would heed Joey's advice, get a little economy car, (Read "slow".) to start out with.

yeah gas is 3.41 over here, expensive to me, but once i get a job, it won't be to hetic

Teenagers don't listen to reason. I know, I was one.

He'll probably end up with some boring sedan like most most kids end up with when they have lofty ambitions for a car. I wish I would have set my sights lower back when I was younger.

First off congrats on the offer as a rx7 owner I can say it all depends on how hard you run her. I'm guessing you want a third gen I personally think you should get a turbo ii and use the left over mula for gas. I don't want to hear a single complain about gas ny is $4

I'm not a reckless teen, I actually plan to go to Lincoln tech so i can learn more about cars, I am actually one of those teens who doesn't have a lot of friends because everybody is too mainstream for me, i went through suicidal tendencies, but calmed down and said f life and moved on. I hate America, I plan on moving to a different country one day.

Miata. DONE

Nice car, I like watching them race against Lotus elises

I didn't say you were reckless, but truth is you are still super inexperienced at driving and owning a fast car means your chance if wrecking much higher.

And too mainstream for friends? Bow down to the Lord of the Hipsters.

Seriously? You consider yourself damn fortunate you can even be in the US and have your parents get a car.
A Toyota Camry here is over US$200k when finally on the road.

Im 18, got into the single digits (lower is better here, A=1, F=9 points etc) for my O level exams and distinctions in english,
grabbing second in class academically and I cant even imagine my parents getting a car.

Consider yourself bloody lucky.

And if you really are serious about an RX7, do your own research... (if your rigidity comment is anything to go by, start ASAP!)
so you can perform maintenance on it yourself and keep it running when $$ becomes an issue.

Also, research yourself on buying tips for these cars if you really "love rotaries" so much.
Learn the weak points (eg: turbocharged rotary engines are prone to overheating [which wear the apex seals if Im not wrong],
hence why many install after-market radiators. Look at mileage as well, making sure it got oil at regular intervals, these rotaries need em)
and IMPORTANTLY browse the rotary/ RX7 forums. Im not even an RX7 enthusiast but I do know that much...

And FYI Im still schooling and was part of the track&field team, recently I got an ankle injury and am going in and out of physio yet I still can research, why cant you?...

And more importantly when you get the car, savour every moment. Maintain her well. Learn the grip limits in a safe place, maybe the odd weekend autocross.

Good luck.

Bro listen to me DO NOT go to Lincoln tech are any of those tech colleges. Go to a school in which you can earn a degree as a mechanic pleasw do some research on that.

Also over heating has nothing to do with apex seal wear well not that much.
Apex seals break due to detonation and lack of oil.

so a somewhat old unreliable sports car as the very first car of a suicidal teenager (and not very smart considering the posts here).

But that makes you wrong because they are prove your facts.

Not a lot of smart of people in the world but they still make it in life, you did so we can't he?

Hell, I'm 17 and having a car would be insanely awesome, doesn't matter if it's a Hyundai Accent with roll up windows and manual mirrors, or a Lexus, a car is a car.

To OP, you want to look for a car that is
1. Reliable: The coolest car in the world doesn't mean anything if it doesn't work.

2. Fuel Mileage: Have fun paying gas for a truck...

3. Driving: I was looking for a car the other day, came across an 08 Elantra that was a great deal, test drove it and found I couldn't stand the driving position, even after messing around with it. Get something that's comfortable to drive.

4. Amenities: After you find some cars with the first 3 points, only then should you care about its features.

I understand. I need to start off slow and understand any car I get. I do also understand I am young, I can't just go on the road and drive wild or even mild. I am a youngling and I love every bit of advice I get.

How I am not smart, god said don't judge. I am very intelligent if you knew me personally. You see where I'm coming from my personal persona. But intriguingly I am a young person learning about cars, weren't you like me before. Didn't you ever make mistakes, nobodys perfect. I pity you, but its ok I'm not trying to bring folks down. Just saying, learning is essential so I'm just a noon learning stop being bashful towards people.

Which generation, and how used? You can get running first and second gen RX7s for ~$500.

And I was thinking a used rx7 cost 17k plus?
If you're spending that much, it's either an absolutely pristine first or second gen, or it's a late third gen in good condition.

Maybe not as such, but there are things that can be done to increase some cars' rigidity, and they don't cost that much. An example would be subframe connectors, a fairly common modification to Mustangs. Or a front strut tower brace.

I just give up on replying. Every convo I have that is like this, it always end ups ugly. Just forget it

It happens to all teenagers who are self proclaimed car people. Trust us, most of us were there at one time. Just be realistic and it'll be easier on you.

My first car was a 1.1 Clio. I didn't crash, I didn't get a speeding ticket and bought myself an E30 325 last year.

69bhp was all I needed as a new driver. A Camaro would be too much for most 30 year old drivers over here, let alone a new driver. No matter how good you think you are a Camaro or RX7 is asking for a huge accident as a new driver.

Thanks for your encouragement.

I understand but which gen do you want?

3rd gen

Gas in a lifted truck ain't fun. Still wasn't fun at stock height. BUT! Trucks are normally dead reliable and great at holding up to the abuse of teens.

I can agree with that^^^^. Gas mileage is terrible. Even the 2013's only get 12-16mpg. Thats about what they got 30 years ago.

FD in nice condition will probably be somewhere around the $10K mark.

If it was me I'd go with a NA 2nd gen though. Half the price, better gas mileage, cheaper to maintain and insure, still a rotary and enough power to be fun but not get you into too much trouble.

Honestly dude a turbocharged, RWD car with almost 300hp will probably be too much for someone who's young and has limited driving experience. My first car was a Datsun with about 80hp and I still found myself kicking the back end out, spinning the tires, doing doughnuts and all manner of frowned upon shenanigans on the public roads. It was never fast enough for me to kill myself and I still enjoyed it. If you had put me in something with 3 times the power I probably would have wrecked it. My story is the same as any gear head at your age. You could be the most responsible young driver out there, doesn't matter, you're still going to want to put the pedal down every once in a while. Especially if you've got something with power. The guys here are being harsh because they've all been young and stupid once.

Besides a performance car comes with a cost. Parts are expensive. If you want to learn more about cars one of the best ways to do that (better than a tech school IMO) is to get something you can work on without having to drop a ton of money on the parts for it. That's one of the things I loved out my Datsun. I literally stripped that car down to a rolling shell myself and put it back together again after it got painted. I learned a lot about mechanics that way.

Don't go for anything powerful at a young age, I know I won't be (mainly due to insurance costs) but also because I know I'll end up binning it into an old lady's Accord or a tree. Just get a small hatchback like a Clio or Fiesta until you're older and more experienced.

The funny thing is, even if it's not fast and it's a 1.6 Vitz/Yaris, insurance companies belive bigger engine=more power. 70bhp  and then, on top of that, if it has a fancy name like, RS, Sport, Super, they'll charge you extra for that!

You should save the money that your parents are willing to use now and save it towards another car a few years down the road after you've got some experience under your belt.

I understand that you think you're responsible and that you'll be fine with a sports car, but trust the people on the forum when they advise that you get something slow, reliable and safe. You'll still be learning to drive for the first couple of years; why use a nice, expensive sports car as your learning experiment?

Oh you must be Canadian. ;)
