Some more Blu-ray Java (BD-J) homebrew for the masses… A Japanese developer has released PS3 Filer v0.0.3 — open select image formats (png, gif, jpg) and even emulate the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Jesse has shared a video of PS3 Filer in action –

Installation:

* Unzip the ps3filer.zip archive
* Copy NES ROMs to the AVCHD directory
* Copy the AVCHD directory to the root of a USB/Flash drive
* Go to the device in the XMB video menu and launch “AVCHD”

I'm surprised that nobody posted this here.:sly:

This was posted on another forum I use yesterday, and as others there said....whats the point in using your PS3 to play old games??

If you wnat to run old games without having to setup the consoles for them you can download a PC emulator....

Also before anyone says....this is NOT a big leap in PS3 homebrew, this is just running Blu-Ray Java which doesn't need to be signed to run.

Java will never be able to do the stuff that can be done once unsigned C/C++ code is able to run on PS3.

Thats amazing, cheers nick 👍.... going to download it now.

Hopefully we will maybe be able to move up to GBA emulation or something eventually.... god forbid N64!

yea i herd about this days ago but the only downside about this emulator is that theres no sound suport. so your still better off downloading an emulator for your computer. at least you will have sound there.

The sounds wernt exactly breathing to begin with though, I could do without the 8 bit soundtrack, but i might miss the sound effects. Im sure updates will come eventually to allow sound support as Blu Ray movie releases become more advanced.

Its made so we can play on the big HDTV sets we have now. Its funny to see the games so blocky.:sly:

I could always get a adapter for my SNES but playing the games on the PS3 is way less bulky in terms of equipment you need. All you need to play NES is 1 controller + 1 PS3 + USB device(to store the roms and the PS3 filer file on) + 1 TV. I might get a adapter for the SNES at radioshack but that depends on the cash that I have.

It's called nostalgia.

Don't know if you noticed but the PS Store also has Joust and Q-Bert.

But I have a Wii, so I already have my old NES faves on a new system.

Nintendo has certianly made hundreds of millions of dollars on it. And many XBLA games are merely rip-offs of old games (ignoring the actual ports of old games that are abound on XBLA).

Why not just use a good PC emulator for such things? I have my PC hooked up to my TV, so if I use my PS3, 360, Wii or my PC for old games it makes no difference, apart from the fact that I can do it all on one single machine.

Also its free on the PC compared to buying stuff on XBLA, the PS Store or the Wii Store.

Then we would be going into the direction of stealing nes roms that have a extended copyright due to the Wii Store selling the classic old games.

Yeah.. Some of us do not want to take the 4 year old PC downstairs to play a simple game which requires a lot more work. As with the PS3 all you need to do is hook up your usb drive and you are all set for some classic gaming on a big screen.

Using a BD Java version of the game for free is not violating any copyright then is it?

Fair enough about not everyone has their TV next to their PC, but the copyright issue is the same for PS3 as it is with PC when it comes to old NES games.

They are all being obtained illegally.

1. Well that depends if you are just making a Java version of a game. To me a game being made from the original might not be legal.
2. Of course but there is very few who rip the rom image from a cartage, thus how do you think they came on the internet(minus the homebrews)?

Joust? QBert? Untold numbers of qarters did I drop into those two machines. My poor plastic Spider-Man piggy bank was never the same after I tore the top off, it took too long to fish quarters out of the slot with a butterknife, I needed full access.

I have a Wii as well, but until RC Pro-Am arrives I've had my retro fix. Please, Nintendo, please!

Yep, and now it only costs $4.99 each to play them unlimited times in HD glory (which just means brighter colors.)

Yeah, after all the main staples of Nintendo's lineup were rolled out I haven't cared too much. But then I also had the Genesis collection for the PS2, which eliminated my need for any Sega based games.
