würd.

I was just browsing GTPlanet, when all of a sudden this netscape install thingy popped up and then my browser gave me a dialog "Mozilla Firefox is not responding", then all of a sudden Mozilla just exited, leaving the Netscape install window in the middle of the screen. Here's a picture of the netscape thing.

So what was this? I don't recall downloading a netscape install file.

I'm not sure if they still do, but back in the days the Mozilla group used a separate application they created, Full Circle, for feedback purposes when any Gecko-based browser had a crash. In other words, if Mozilla, Netscape, Firefox/Firebird/Phoenix, or Camino crashed, Full Circle would come up so that you could send feedback to the team on what might have caused the crash.

That isn't an installer dialog window – notice it's titled "Quality Feedback Agent". They're simply using the Netscape front-end to control Full Circle.

Exactly the same as I've had once or twice.

My Firefox is irritating because I can't get rid of the damn "critical updates" button.

I have 0.9.3 yet it wants me to "critically update" to 0.9.1.

Aren't Mozilla and Netscape closely related?

The "Quality" Feedback Agent doesn't even work for me.

Short history lesson: Netscape was the predecessor to all Gecko browsers. When Netscape got bloated and gross, Mozilla was created (by the same group of people) as their sort of "new-age", completely open-source browser. Mozilla is now the face of the company, but they still keep Netscape for people who want it, and they've since spun off Firefox as a lean version of Mozilla, and Camino for OS X. In other words:

Mozilla Company
|
|–– Mozilla (browser)
|–– Netscape
|–– Firefox
|–– Camino

They have a few other scattered projects, but those are the main ones (sort of... Camino's stalled now that Firefox is a viable cross-platform alternative).
