New bike - What should I get?

Alright. SO I'm getting a bike for christmas. It has to be a Trek, as I can get them for cheaper, as my dads friend works for Trek. I just want to use it for long fast rides, no jumping or racing. I was thinking a 4300, I also got told they're good? What else could I get thats worth getting?
 
Are you talking about a road bike, hybrid/crusier type bike, or Mountain Bike?

And what is your budget?

If your dad's friend works for Trek, he should be able to also get bike from Gary Fisher, Klein, and LeMond also as they are all the same company built in the same factories. Just you are aware of all the options:)
 
I reacon Specialized are quite good......I own one myself and they are very good value for money and they do perform well......but I don't know what type of bike your after......
 
Trek 4300, for anyone interested in offering viable options in his desired ranges. It's a hardtail, front suspension mountain bike running $360 retail.

I would honestly recommend something more in the hybrid / trail catagory. That's what I have. I don't have any desire to go flying down the unbeaten path half out of control. But a nice 15mph average on a street or mostly level dirt / gravel path is just my style.

Several years ago my dad and I rode about 150 miles of the Katy Trail in Missouri, USA. They've taken an unused railroad line and converted it into a 'linear park'. Basically ripped out the ties and rails and layed in finely crushed gravel to form a well packed surface that doesn't get big puddles and doesn't need constant maintainence. It was also probably really cheap. A mountain bike with or without suspension would have been a much more laboring ride, and a street bike would have been a flat tire fiasco.

Trek is a good brand, and you're in about the right price range (could kick it up a bit though). Make sure you've got the right catagory for the kind of riding you want to do.
 
I really think I should gte the 4300, I reckon once I get a job and some money I'll doo what my dads friend did and make it a "hybrid" bike, a race bike with a mountain bike frame.
I have a few friends with the same bike, they all say its a great bike. SO I think this might be the one for me.
 
Well, I told my dad that I want the Trek 4300. So he's going to talk to his friend now.:)
