Reviewer Kenzie believes that BMW designers may have made the all-new, slightly larger 5th-generation 3-Series sedan look too similar to its 5-Series sedan sibling's from most angles.

The instrument panel is all-new and all models equipped with the optional satellite navigation system also get the highly-controversial, and infuriating iDrive multifunction control 'knob.'

The new 3-Series (330i shown here) looks most familiar from the rear. It has been mostly spared the trunk cover 'hump' that has elicited innumerable comments, and drawn much flak, on the newest 5 and 7-Series.

The new 3-Series is larger than its forebear by 49 mm in length, 35 mm in wheelbase, 71.5 mm in width and 55.9 mm in height. Rear passenger benefit most from the gain in interior volume.

Our man Kenzie hopes that the new 320d, with its torquey 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, will make it to Canada. We should be so lucky.

I find the design revolting; nothing like the past two or three 3-series'. The models are a little sacreligious, too.

The new 3-series styling is the best! :dopey:

They should carry over the BMW M3 (E46) for the 2006 model year and then replace it with a more aggressive version of the 3-series.

I actually saw one of these being driven around Wales yesterday. It was quite a sight in the metal, so I recommend you reserve judgement until you see it in real life.

But judging from pictures the first thing I thought was that the new one doesn't look as good as the current one. It's not as ugly as PS's avatar though.

Looks alright......the back lights make it look cheap though! :yuck: I wish they had kept the square and 'red lines' style of the old 3 and 5 series......looked like LED strips.....

And if you've been playing GT4 you'd have known about it.

Love or hate the styling, you have to admit that the 3.0 I6 is a very advanced engine.

I know I'm definately in the minority with this, but I absolutely love the new-look BMW cars. Yes, they are a bit bold, which is something they never did. But, like Rossell said, seeing them in person is a whole new story. They have lots of little sublte things that make the designs so great. I think the new 3 is perfect. It looks like a new-style BMW, but kept a little more tame. I love it. I love all of them. They just appeal to my style. I know thats not what a lot of people think, the exact opposite actually. But oh well. I think they look fantastic.

The front bumpers are what tick me off. And yes, I know, my avatar is infinitely cooler than all of yours put together + 1.

I can't beleive it is actually starting to grow on me... :indiff:

Yeah, this is at least 3 months old…

Anyway, it's okayish. Damn BMW though for using cheap football-plastic material on its dashboards… most awful stuff in the world.

I'll stick with my E30 ;)

The 3 series has slowly gotten too big and heavy IMHO. This design just got even bigger, and of course... heavier. But I don't know... I'd still like to see it in the flesh. I like the front, but the taillights are a little funky.

Are BMWs getting uglier and uglier? I used to hate the mid/late 90's to early 00's BMWs, but they kind of grew on me in the end. Maybe it'll be the same with the new line-up...... maybe.

I dont mind the new 3 series, although it is getting abit big.

I'm with you on that one 👍

I dont like it one bit, but the M3 is the only 3 series I care about, so I'll reserve final judgement till then. The 3 series has finaly moved up into the mid size category and I'm glad it will be geting a proper V8 to go with it. 4.0 liters, 400 horses, and 8000 naturally asperated, revolutions per minute. 👍

I drove the new 330i a couple of days ago.

Don't let the sheetmetal fool you. The car has very impressive moves. People get hung up over the styling, but in the end, it's the drive that counts and the E90 has talent in spades.

I won't be trading in my ZHP just yet, but when the turbo hits (I'm going with the moniker '330is'), it may be time for a swap.

It seems allot of the Bangle (Lol Bangle sux am i rite lol) BMW's don't seem to look that impresive in photos. I mean everyone was going on about how horrible the one series looked, I mean I thought it was a little odd looking in photos. When I actually saw one, it looked great, kind of like a mini M Coupe.

The E90 looks nice, well from what i've seen in photos and in GT4 anyway.

I heard the new 3's are awd...Is this true? If so, that is a major first(that I know of)for BMW.

As far as I know they've had AWD models for a while in America, I think it's the xi models. So like a 328xi is an AWD model, Em-Spec probably knows better though.

^^

3-Series were available as AWD first in 1991. 325ix (E30). It didn't sell very well, so they disspeared for a while in the North American market.

AWD returned as a model option in '01 (unless I'm mistaken.. could have been '02) in the 330xi, 325xi and 325xi Touring (wagon) (E46).

The E90 will receive the same xDrive AWD system as in the X3. The E60 (5-Series) will be available with xDrive later this year, which is a first for the 5-Series in the US market, if not the North American market in general.

Looks great to me. I like all the new ones. Almost all the screenshots I posted were all the new designs.

The new 3 series is one of those designs that you just don't notice as a brand new model straight away - you see them on the road and recognise it as a 3, but the fact that its the new style doesn't always register. It does, however, seem a little strange that its the same size as the contemporary 5 series - just as the X3 is roughly the size of a X5 - its not like they bother with the smaller 1.6 and 1.8 engines in the 3 any more, not with us now having the 1 series. As for the E90's styling, i think its a little on the bland side, but thats better than having it look like its fallen out of the ugly tree and hit ever single branch on the way down like the other 'Bangleoids' in the range. I suppose with the the 3-series being the 'bread-and-butter' model in the range they have to be a little more 'safe' with its styling.

As for the badging on the petrol turbo 3 series when it arrives - i would'nt be supprised if the brought back the ti label.

i don't know what everyone's problem is with the 5 series. though i was a little bit disappointed when i saw the first photos, i was positively surprised when i saw it on the street for the first time.
besides it seems to be very succesful. i already see much more e60s on the street than e39s. i bet in a year it will be the same with the new 3 series.
