Maybe the younger buyers of the BMW series can afford a higher level of performance car?

Plans for a scorching M version of the BMW 1-series are back on track, after its production was put in jeopardy amid concerns about high development costs and its positioning within the German car maker’s line-up. According to Munich bosses, the new car, depicted here in our exclusive computer-generated image, has been brought back into BMW’s forward model line-up following a resurgence in Europe’s hot-hatch ranks with cars such as the Volkswagen Golf R32, Alfa Romeo 147 GTA and Ford Focus RS.

‘The market for high-performance small cars has evolved greatly in recent years. Pricing is not so sensitive and buyers appear prepared to pay more than has been the case up until now,’ a BMW source said.

Seen as a spiritual successor to the original M3 of 1986, the new junior M car was originally conceived with four-cylinder power. But with the standards raised by rival car makers in recent years, BMW is now looking at an all-new 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine. It is tipped to use the same bore-centre measurements and individual cylinder capacity as the potent new 5.0-litre V10 engine and is part of an expanded M-engine line-up.

Further details remain scarce, although Autocar understands BMW is aiming for a red line of 8500rpm and an output around 310bhp — 160bhp more than today’s petrol range-topper, the 150bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder 120i. With power going to the rear wheels through a seven-speed SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox) and a likely kerbweight of 1500kg, the baby M-car promises class-leading performance. Estimates put its 0-60mph capability at 5.8sec, with its top speed likely to be limited to 155mph.

Autocar sources say the lightweight engine, running BMW’s latest dual-Vanos variable valve timing system and individual throttle butterflies for each cylinder, forms part of a whole range of new high-revving M-division engines. This includes a 400bhp 4.0-litre V8 for the next-generation M3 due in early 2006. The next generation M3 (right) will be launched in both two-door coupe and cabrio, and four-door saloon form. That engine is also pencilled in to power a Z4M, the hot version of the two-seat roadster, although possibly in a detuned form (see gallery).

But Autocar has also unearthed plans for a secret gung-ho 6.0-litre V12 earmarked for a new M7 performance flagship. BMW has always resisted developing an M version of its luxury saloon, but the success of the Mercedes S55 AMG hasn’t gone unnoticed in Munich.

The six-cylinder unit from the new 1-series is essentially half of the new V12 powerplant. Both engines will be produced at BMW’s specialist engine plant in Munich.

 Well I am gonna assume that it will be afforadable to those who buy mid size sedans around 25000-30000 USD. I am gonna guess the price is gonna be under 30000 maybe?

Yeah , that would be a fine price for that sort of car. Imagine , that the Rover (doesn't rememeber the name of the car) cost about 23.000£ , that's a cheap price for that M1 I guess.

Yeah I bet BMW will be selling these like hot cakes if they were 30000 USD!

Yeah , sure they will ;)
But since the 1 series got on sale , I've just seen a few.
I dunno if the new M1 would sell more.

Well when they see this car they are gonna be like OMG look at the specs of that car! So they will atleast consider it.

Pah! This is an M1

So this is how the new BMW M1 is suppose to look like? Will it be coming to the United States? I am interested in this so called "M1".

So far this is what I have gather from the BMW M1.

- 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine
- Producing around 310bhp
- Rear Wheel Drive
- A seven-speed SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox)
- Weighing around 1500kg (3306 pounds)
- Estimates 0-60 in 5.8s
- Top speed likely to be limited to 155mph.

Looks and sound good to me.

Anyone know how much it will be priced? Don't seem like it will be under $30,000. The 3.0L Z4 runs around 40 grand, this should out perform it and still be around the 30 grand mark? Impressive.

It's all assumption for the moment. There are no official pictures of an "M1". In fact, BMW is more likely to make an M2 with the upcoming 2-series, based off of the 1-series.

If these assumptions actually was true. I would truely be amazed and will have the cash to buy one. Seeing it is around 30 G mark. This is a way better buy than the Nissan 350Z or BMW Z4.

WITH THE HAMANN TUNING PACKAGE TOO!! I love the M3, and M5. The new M1 though, looks like an extra-curvy toyota matrix with wicked rims. Not too shabby, but needs a little bit of work.

I know it's just a disguised test-car, but that's not the next M3. If it were, it'd have bigger wheels and quad exhaust tips. And 1500kg for a "light hatchback"? That's right near the current 330Ci. Lastly, if the M1 were coming to the US, it would never make it under the $30k mark. There's a blue and white badge on the front, so find cars with similar performance, and add a solid 5k.

Th original M1 looks so much slicker. This one is blocky and awkward. I really don't like the direction that Bovarian Moter Werks is going in... 👎 The E46 is the peak if BMW, IMO. The new ones (new 1,2,3, and X) all look the same. They all have an awkward combination of lines and curves. The headlights look hideous as well. Bangle, you poor tasteless bastard... (Are the new generation Bimmers designed by Bangle? The don't seem anything like the new 5, 7, and Z Series...)

I hope you are not referring to my picture. Because that is a M3.

As for the weight of the M1, I agree. Why does it weigh so much? That weight is around the same for a Nissan 350Z. It's crazy.

If these specs are right, then it should be placed around 37K. I know for a fact that the Nissan 350Z can do exactly what this M1 has been expected to do. The Nissan can also do 0-60 in around 5.8 seconds. I think if the M1 does come out with these assumptions then it would be a clear rival for the Nissan 350Z.

I actually find the Z car pretty attractive. Just ran into a BMW Z4 2.5 today. Looks very sexy, although it is incredible overprice for the performance and stats you get.

The 3.5 Z4 can't even touch the Nissan 350Z, and it cost 10 grand more.

I wouldn't expect it to touch the 350Z, seeing as how there is no 3.5L Z4 ;).

Nah, I wasn't referring to your picture, but to the one in the linked article. I don't much care for that M3 though, it ruins the lines of the stock, quite elegant E46.

It's 10G more, because it costs 10G more to get the materials that BMW uses. Also, I read that BMW and heard from a BMW-Bodyshop Owner that B.M.W. stands for Bovarian Motorsports Warehouse. ?????

SO thats what it stands for thanks alot I always wondered what it meant!

Argh. Please Clarify that it is an M version of the 1 series BMW, not a new revival of the M1. I had my hopes up for about half a minute. 👎 :grumpy:

LOL bovarian? You're thinking of "bovine.'' . A marca Bavaria? ever heard that term? I have but i dunno wut it means lol. Bavaria i tihnk is like an old generalized area of ukraine and germany or something
