A compact Jeep was spied in Detroit, and it will be replacing the aging Compass and Patriot. It resembles the current Compass, and is on a stretched version of the Jeep Renegade chassis. Powertrain is likely to be the 2.0L Hurricane four cylinder.

If it is 90% a Renegade, I'm not sure what the point is. After all, the Renegade has been a pretty successful vehicle for Jeep thus far. If they're really focusing in on it being more civil, like the Grand Cherokee, that could be a great entry in the segment. More wheelbase would definitely help the ride on the Renegade, and a little more gusto over the 2.4L would help with the weird power curve. I guess the question is, how off-road capable will they make it? At this point, I think it would almost be safer for Jeep to keep it on the more comfortable/civil side.

It's going to be substantially larger than the Renegade, and a bit bigger than the Compass. It does seem to have more orthodox, less "outdoorsy-ish" looks. If ends up looking good and is price in the 19k-22k range (base) than I suspect it will be a fairly good seller.

A Renegade is a Fiat 500 that's taken Viagra, according to the advert. It's too small and hideous, you'd actually be better off with the full-on Fiat version. I drove a nearly-new Compass at a Fiat dealership near me the other day... it's horrible. I don't know what long-term Jeep fans think of it but my last Jeep (proper) was way better despite having some awful traits itself.

Even Mrs. Ten didn't like it and she loves all things Fiat, it says a lot about her own faulty wiring I think :)

The only reason people buy Compasses or Patriots is when they don't have a good enough credit rating to get a Cherokee.

The Renegade, on the other hand, is hideous, but driving a few it's hideous in a strangely appealing way. I actually get it. And you can get a white leather interior with it.

your quoting a 500X advertisement.

Having driven both, I think it really depends on where your priorities are. The 500X still had the terrible tune on the 9-speed box, and sacrificed a lot of storage space with the swoopy shape. I 100% liked the interior more in the Fiat, and the ride seemed a little more isolated, but in the end the smart money goes towards the Jeep.

We're Jeep. At Jeep, we make too many SUVs ranging from big ones, slightly smaller ones, medium sized ones, rebodied fiat SUVs, old timely jeeps, etc. Now we'll add a new SUV to our already bloated lineup of nothing but SUVs.

I mean, what else can they make?

Might as well put GMC in there somewhere (minus the Fiat part).

Working 'park' selectors?

That's already been addressed with the latest facelift.

Also would you believe that the problematic shifter is the EXACT same ZF built/designed shifter used in Audis?

Though I believe I've read that Audi set it up so it would automatically go into park if the door is opened (I'm guessing as long as the car is not in motion).

That's what I heard yesterday that Chrysler are going to do to fix the models currently affected.
