My desktop PC died on Wednesday, I used it at least 6 hours a day so it was very important to get one quick

My old PC run Windows XP home edition, 128mb RAM, 80gb hard drive, & I can't remember the processor.

My new laptop is a Toshiba Equium running on 1028mb of RAM, 60gb gard drive, core duo processor, 15" LCD widescreen display.

As for Vista, I haven't had much time to play around with it yet as I only got it today but at first look it's brilliant, loads new features.

Does it have some sort of go back feature like os x leopard?... theres is called time machine.. I wonder if vista has a way of undoing something you last did, like accidently delete a file.....

Yup, there certainly is.

It's called Volume Shadow Copy. Here's what Microsoft has to say about it:

Volume Shadow Copy

Have you ever accidentally saved over a file you were working on? Accidental file deletion or modification is a common cause of data loss. Windows Vista includes another useful innovation to help you protect your data: Volume Shadow Copy. Volume Shadow Copy automatically creates point-in-time copies of files as you work, so you can quickly and easily retrieve versions of a document you may have accidentally deleted.

Leopard's Time Machine has a bit more personality while Vista's Volume Shadow Copy is more, skip the bull:censored: - I just want my old file back. They both get the job done.

Oh, and Sierra: I noticed that you have your screenshot pasted on Paint... Vista has a screenshot tool called Snipping Tool to make it easier for you ;)

Not to be a smart arse, but don't you mean it had a 128mb graphics card? I don't know of any HP Compaqs on sale in the last 7 years that have had anything less than 256mb. At a guess I'd say it had 512. That seems to be the standard for Compaq desktops of about that age (if I remember correctly which model you had). Anyways...

Congrats :). I bet you'll enjoy the portability. And the increase in speed, of course. Just for the record (every time I see Toshiba Equium posted I have to reply) make sure you keep it cool. I've had no experience with dual core processors, but when I had one with a P4 in it overheated massively after about 5 months of use. You'll be absolutely fine for the first few months, but as soon as you notice it getting hot at... anything, go buy a cooling mat ASAP. They're excellent laptops until you cook them, and then everything seems to go wrong. Not meaning to scare you or put you off your new purchase here, I just don't want to see any more "I hate Toshiba" thread around here (mainly because I posted about 8 in the space of a month). But yeah, I could say that about any laptop really. Just be a little more careful than you might have been with your desktop (I was stupid enough to sit with it on the carpet, for example).

Damn, every time I see someone using Vista, I want it. I just can't bring myself to pay so much money :(. I guess your PC broke at the right time :p. Just for the record, don't throw out your desktop just yet. From my experience, it'll magically start working right when the laptop is dying. It's rather helpful, since you can still go on GTP and complain to everyone about how annoying PCWorld's support staff are.

Anways, enjoy your new stuff Mr Fancy pants :p

Nice purchase 👍 And like Jon. (you will always be that to me) said, surely you had more than 128mB ram, wasn't that like the mimimum spec for XP anyway?

Enjoy it, but please keep us updated with how Vista runs :D

Oh and I was surprised today when I saw Tesco had Vista computers on the shelves aswell.

Vista = teh ghey.
Your post = useless.

Congrats on the purchase! I'm personally not into Toshibas myself, but they are solidly built and reliable for computers, so I'm sure you will enjoy it. Well, I'm sure you'll enjoy Vista more than anything else. :)

Yeah, I think it must've been, still, damn slow PC :ouch:

Thanks for the tips :) My knees are bacon & no doubt my desk will be a BBQ soon...Or maybe not.

I've heard allot of complaints on PC world'd support staff, but they said they'll just send it back to Toshiba.

Yes, I need a laptop & desperately wanted Vista  Excactly the right time!

Navy doesn't look so Navy on this display :grumpy:

Core Duo or Core 2 Duo? I really hope it's the latter.

Does anyone know any good firewalls that will work on Vista? I've always used Zone Alarm but it's not compatible :(

@ dougiemeats, I didn't see your post, thanks for the tip on the Snipping Tool, it works a dream!

Does Vista have its own firewall, like with XP SP2?

I'd suggest using that until some of the major firewall programs out there become compatible, which shouldn't take too long. Unless there are some out there that I don't know about...

Vista does have a firewall. It's called, ' Windows Defender '. You can always shut that off or disable it ( I think ) and install ZA then. I haven't tried it on my Vista yet, but it should work. If you need any other question regarding Vista though, PM me, I got it, I'll help ya.

No problem. 👍

Everyone says Vista has nothing to offer over XP, yet it's all the nice little things that really make it better.

Yeah, the little things are everything in Vista although aparently most of Vista's best features are hidden.

I've got a horrible feeling that what Defender is to Zone alarm will be very similar to what Tissue paper is to Titanium, though.

Or maybe they've actually improved it. Ahahahaha! No.

Which, in the end, is what makes your day to day usage more enjoyable.

Did you ever open it up and see if there was an accumulation of dust? Considering that it overheated after so many months, maybe it needed some cleaning or the heatsink re-seated.

Edit: Congrats on the new laptop and Vista. Does it have a real video card?

Yeah, I thought that might have something to do with it. Still, it pretty much did it from new so it would have needed it doing very frequently.

Judging by the fact that it's a Toshiba, they usually stick something ATI in there. Doesn't matter which card it is, it'll still be better than the intel stuff.

Vista, is a beta or emulator of Mac's OSX :)

Just skinned differently.

Honestly, just stop it with your useless posts.

Congrats on your new laptop Sierra! Just don't try 'decorating' your PC again!

My useless posts? MmmK.

Sierra, I have Vista Ultimate. If you have any other problems, once again, please PM me with any. I'll work around it.

Amen.

Judging from this screenshot, I'd say no. It still seems to run Aero just fine though.

Isn't Windows Defender an antispyware application, instead of a firewall? I thought Windows Defender and Windows Firewall were separate applications.

Freakin' seriously.

No, Windows Defender is an anti-spyware tool. There however is a firewall built into Vista, and it's actually quite good. Open the security center to find it.

Okay okay back on topic.

So, MK1, how's Vista? Would you have paid $200 for it to upgrade? What's your favorite feature? Is Aero overrated?

Vista is awesome, loads new features & looks great!

Nope, not unless I had a damn good PC & the money.

Favourite feature, hard to say really. The new search is great, everything really!

Aero is the best thing ever to happen to windows, frigging awesome!
