Last week my PS3 YLOD on me...original launch day 60gb. I took it to a place that said they could fix it, charged me a 40 dollar diagnostic fee and said it would be read in 24hrs. A week later and he tells me the motherboard is the problem, but they were able to retrieve the game. My question now is how much does a new motherboard cost? My next question, (which I think I know the answer to) even if they replace the motherboard, my game save should still be useable right? Since its saved to the HD? I already have a new ps3 that my wife bought me for Christmas....so I am hoping to eventually transfer it over.

Thanks for any help
Merry Christmas

My original lost the ability to read Blu-ray discs.I can still play the content (downloaded). I didn't bother getting it looked at, Bought one of the new style and transferred all my saves and demo's and such. Keep the old one and if you find a new MO BO at a reasonable price. :)

On a side note my eldest son 23 is on his 4th Xbox and my 15 year old is on his 6th Xbox. I picked one up for my self the same time I purchased the new black Xbox for my son. As an owner of both the Xbox and PS3 I give (hands down) the nod to the PS3. I am waiting for Forza 4, Forza 3 is a good game but just not as fun to play imo.

For a CECHA one that works? Usually over $100. That's not the main issue, though.

No. You can't simply swap the hard drive from one PS3 to another. It will force you to reformat it when you do so, so unless you have a way to get the YLOD PS3 running for just enough time to transfer stuff off of it, you are probably out of luck. And you can't get it running by putting a new motherboard in it, because that will also force you to reformat the drive.

I was hoping to get the YLOD problem fixed just long enough to get my game save saved to my usb drive so I could load it on my new ps3. What would cause the motherboard to go bad...I thought the main reason why the YLOD was happening was beacuse of the GPU and CPU losing their connection because the solder melted away? Maybe I am misinterperating this all.

So if they do in fact replace the motherboard, that will wipe away my HD and I am back to square one?

That is one of the reasons, but YLoD is actually a general hardware fault. It's cause isn't as specific as the RRoD is on the 360.

Unfortunately, yeah. Your best bet would be to try to get your current motherboard working temporarily and transfer all your stuff while it was working.

so I went and picked up my ps3, he got the game removed. But I am thinking the guy didnt even crack open my ps3. The warranty sticker is still on there and looks like it hasnt been touched. Also, the blue screw holding in the HD doesnt have any paint missing on the head of the screw. I am hoping they didnt crack it open and the guy was just bsing me. All I want is my game save! guess we will find out mon. Thanks for the help tornado. Hopefully this guy on mon can get it working.
