So i've decided to replace this computer with a new one except this time for the first time i'm going to build one (with the help of a knowledgeable friend of course) it was just ordered earlier today but here's the parts list...

SeaSonic S12D 850 Silver 850W PSU
Mushkin Enhanced Redline 4GB(2 x 2GB) RAM
XFX Radeon HD 5870 1GB PCI Express
Silverstone Fortress Series Case
2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 750GB
GIGABYTE GA-P55-UD6 LGA 1156 Intel P55
Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz

What do you guys think?

It's a pretty nice build, although you don't need all that power coming from the PSU, unless you're planning on doing a crossfire later on. Also, I don't know if I'm reading this right but I don't see your motherboard supporting the frequency of your RAM.

DDR3 2600+/2200/1333/1066/800

If that's the case I suppose it will run in 1066MHz?

And enjoy the free DiRT 2, I'm having lots of fun with it.

go to microcenter for your cpu. you can get an i5 750 for $150 there, or an i7 920 for $200 if you have a microcenter store nearby. also, there are X58 motherboards on newegg that cost less than that p55 mobo.

I thought the samsung F1/F3 and also western digital 750gb hdds were faster than seagate, but I'm not sure. If you're going to be overclocking, you'll want to invest in an aftermarket heatsink.

Good specs. Only thing that's letting it down are the 750gb hard drives. I would of recommended getting 2x Western Digital Caviar Black 640gb or 1TB as they are much faster and reliable. The new Samsung F3 is the fastest 1TB out too. Current 750gb are slower than any 640GB or 1TB hard drive so personally I would have stayed clear of those.

If your going to spend that amount of money on a mobo, get an X58. Everything else looks good, but the page for your ram doesnt seem to be working (Currently Unavailable). Good choice for the PSU and the case.

And go for 2 640's or 2 1TB's. I made a choice to get a single 500GB segate and I wish I would had gone for the 640 Blacks. If you do this right the first time around and use the best quality parts, you wont have trouble in a few years.

Looks good, but if it was my build I would have went a bit cheaper on the case and PSU, maybe a bit more for the CPU, and possibly a different storage setup.

I believe my friend said were going to overclock the mobo.. I may or may not do a crossfire setup so the extra wattage is nice. I kind of followed my friend on this one so the 2 seagates are for the raid 0 setup. An aftermarket heatsink will be coming but not yet.

X58 is a S1366 board. He would have to get a different CPU, 920 and triple channel memory. The MB he selected is sweet. 24 phase power and 3way xfire, sli. Not bad at that price.

he can just get 2 sticks and run dual channel. he doesnt have to run 3 :p I'd go for 3 sticks though...

Well, we finished the build today. I have to say i'm pretty happy with it, although I was kind of caught off guard with how big the case was but it's awesome anyways. 👍

I'll get some pictures tomorrow. I may not look the cleanest from the inside but hey it's my first try.

Nice specs, you will have a lot of fun with it. Good choice. I5/i7 rocks.

I realize it's probably messy for you guys that have done this many times before but... i'm happy with it. I must say i was a bit suprised at the size of the case but it's awesome. It's probably more than twice the size of my little HP desktop :P One of these days i'll have to take the time and tie up all those wires.

The next thing to do would be to get a better heatsink for the cpu and get some tri-channel RAM. I like the case though. It's nice to see a change in once a while.

I most certainly will be getting a better heatsink for the CPU and yes it is a P55.

Is there space behind the motherboard tray for your internal cables? If so, you should route them that way. It looks better, and tidies up the airflow dramatically.

Don't try overclocking it without aftermarket cooling.

No there's hardly any space at all the only wires running behind in that tiny space is the SATA and power cables to the hard drives.

Never seen a case that places everything sideways before. Interesting. But I guess it would work better if you placed it on the floor.

That case doesn't look like it was designed for wire management. Look at all those cables laying on those bottom fans. Where would you put them for better airflow?

Well first I got to attempt to straighten them all up and tie them up but other than that there isn't really a place to put them out of sight out of mind. I could have gotten modular but we both didn't think it was necessary but I don't think it's that big of a deal. The ambient temperature has been fine thus far.
