Okay, I just picked up my PS2 (just a few years late) after trading in all my other game consoles (N64, PSX). First game I bought was GT3 (hoping for GT4 as a Christmas present, dependant on release date). Anyway, I was wondering how long it took to adjust to GT3 from GT2. I find it is a bit more "touchy". The speed seems "slow" although the timers are right on. Anyone else note these from their experiences?

I do like the look, the controls, the new console. I hope to catch on fast.

Two things to note:
- the frame rate of the PS2 is much higher
- there's significantly less lag between pushing a button and your PS2 responding

I didn't notice it so much going from PSX to PS2 (probably because I'd had the PS2 for some time before I got GT3), but certainly going back to GT1 and GT2 it is noticeable.

You'll adapt pretty quickly. Run some races in Arcade to get a feel for it first.

I didn't play much GT2 before jumping into GT3, but like you I purchased my PS2 for GT3 (the bundle actually). GT3 is like 'the adult version' of GT2. It's all grown up and matured. Everything about it has been pushed up quite a bit and it takes a little bit of time to get used to everything.

Well, welcome to the world of PS2/GT3, and welcome to GTPlanet! Never played GT2 or a PS, but I'm just feeling friendly... Have fun with a great game!

To me GT2 felt softer and the cars easier to control than GT1 but GT3 has gone back towards GT1 it feels much sharper....
Anyways enjoy the game you will find GTplanet most helpfull in helping your progress.

Welcome to GTP... :)

I've personally found a similar resemblance to GT2 in GT3. All I can say is that in GT3, it flows better and get used to the Analog Stick. It makes things interesting.

Don't try playing GT2 anymore, although you don't have your old PSX anymore, don't try. I guarantee you won't be able to play it after a good session of GT3. I hope you enjoy it. ;)

Thanks for all the encouragement, mates. I am getting used to the controls and won the Sunday Cup in only three races. It is still kinda dicey on the tight corners but I had that problem in GT2 and it will work itself out with a bit of experience and tuning.

Funny story. Got my wife to race me yesterday. She never played before. I chose the Storia and she had the Miata. If she kept a straight line she would have beat me. She was weaving all over the place. I will get her in line soon!

lol
i havnt played GT2 in yonks but when i did swicth i felt it to be more twichy although it didnt take long for me to adjust. welcom to GTplanet

Having played GT1 and 2 for over three years before playing GT3, I can say there really isn't much of a difference in the way you control the cars.

GT1 was very forgiving about the way you slid into corners, and GT2 made the steering input a little more realistic, taking away some of the powerslides and over-zealous cornering abilities. And having played GT2 the most, and delving straight into GT3 really isn't much different.

I think it's actually harder to spin a car in GT3 than it was in GT2. The controls ar about the same, just more forgiving at mistakes. However, wall-riding (which we all do accidently, right?) in GT1/GT2 didn't hurt your speed quite as much as it does in GT3.

The analog stick allows for more precise steering input, but I still like my brake and throttle as the O and X buttons (unless I have to do more than 3 laps of the Test Course).

yea i did notice a difference and i think it is the effect of gravity on the car. its more realistic like i tell my buddys you try to get in your saturn and charge into a turn at 100mph and jump on the brakes you will push in the corrnor like a dump truck

I never noticed anything different going from GT2 to GT3-A(probably because i played GTA3 first). But i went to my sis's last summer and forgot GT3-a at home. And I was stuck with GT1, when I got back I noticed GT3 didn't steer as well as I remembered(even in F1 cars).

I don't quite get what people mean by saying GT3's controls are "sharper." If anything, GT3's controls seem much softer.

For example, go try the S-6 license test in GT3 (Viper Oreca @ Laguna Seca), then go try the S-7 license test in GT2 (Viper Oreca @ Laguna Seca). GT2 is much more twitchy. You have to just barely tap the controls. GT3 is easier to control, but I wouldn't call it "sharper."

Welcome to GT Planet :)

yes I noticed the same thing for the longest time. It took me a few weeks to come to grips with the controls but once you do you will never want to go back to GT2 anyways. With the standard controller you have so much more control in variable braking, cornering and acceleration. The graphics are so much better by far.

I played GT2 up to about 80%, was completely addicted to it. Then out came GT3 and it all started over again. One thing nicer about GT2 is the range of cars, but then again GT3 makes up for that with it's better graphics ect. on every car. Always amazed by the reflections and stuff off of the cars on a track like Trial Mountain ... AWESOME bro's. Also the added advantage is the variable throttle control you have (3 different amounts of sensitivity), which really helps you keep your speed through the corners up, by applying 1/2 pressure through the turn ect.

1 question, is a steering wheel really worth the money over the analog controls ??? Please let me know, as here in S.A. those thing are quite expensive !

Here are my feelings after a few days with GT3. I went back into GT2 after playing 3 for a couple of days. Just to see the difference. There is a lag in control in GT2 that is really not noticed unless you have played GT3 for a few straight days. My RX-7 seemed so out of control on GT2. I like the controls of GT3 and even have tamed the Laguna Seca monster better than I did with GT2. The graphics, simply put, are amazing! As far as the cars are concerned, I dont mind just having the "new" cars, but, I did like having the used ones available. Hearing that GT4 will have over 500 vehicles available will have me hitting stores the minute it comes out.

Overall, a great game which I highly recommend to any racing gamer. OK, I have been online too long, time to go earn some money! Thanks for all the encouragement folks. GTP is a great community. I have learned a lot about the game with the tips here. :)

Don't get me started on the "Softness" issue from playing Quakeworld to playing Quake 2 !

You guys have no idea how easy you have it !
:banghead:

I never really noticed a control difference between the GT games, I can play all of them interchangably, and not notice the difference. I guess I'm just wierd that way, cuz all of my friends notice the difference, and I think the games all feel the same.

Sad thing is i am that way too. The only thing i noticed is there is no ABS on GT1 but that takes bout half hour to get used to

My difficulty is switching between cars. I just got through the low beginner rounds and have "upgraded" my car roster. I switched from my Miata to my FTO and that, for me, was a real adjustment. I like the Miata, but prefer the FTO. That goes back to my GT2 days. I had a great FTO that I built up and tuned perfectly.

I guess my brain is a bit slower at adapting than others. :banghead:

As you move up through the ranks of vehicles you'll find favorites - we all do. Eventually you'll get to the ones that stick to the road as if they were on rails. With proper tuning and settings you can get your cars moving pretty swiftly down the track, and really realize how great GT3 is.
