New RX-7??

I would rather judge those as possible RX-8 models, especially the first linked image looks like a concept RX-8, rather than a new RX-7.

Besides, with the latest Mazda 3 and Mazda 6, surely the RX-7 couldn't become as hideous as these images? Even the latest Camry looks better than those

I think it looks nice and futuristic, but would be better off under a different name.

this as a current model? You're right in a way though, Mazda will have a hard time producing anything more beautiful as the Mazda6 but still, that's not what an RX-7 should look like...

this as a current model?

We get the one with the slightly messed up front, so it's sort of in line with this concept. By different name, I meant not under the RX-7 name. ;) Might as well go with what is next in line: RX-9, RX-10? Or they could just leave it with the concept name.

I'd rather have the Kabura then the R&T version...

I thought they were going to make the Kabura anyway!? :grumpy:

The RX-7 actually has some distant relations with its predecessor car, for once.

It seems the answer to a question nobody asked, though very nicely phrased and perhaps even a bit enlightening. I had no idea that there was a niche left for a higher-performance vehicle in the Mazda lineup. I can't say much about the internal components, but it is quite good-looking compared to other recent concepts.

I actually like it but I agree maybe they should go with a different name but if they are really trying to make it like the original RX-7 then go for it.

Wasn't the Kabura going in production in 2010 as the MX-4 Kabura? :dunce:
But anyways, the rendered car looks quite futuristic and is what Mazda is aiming to look for. 👍 But as someone specifies, it will probably be better named after a new model instead of the RX-7. I mean it does have no relation the the RX-7 whatsoever...... :indiff:

Its on, its off, its on, its off... I thought they were going RX-9 based on the Furai (sp?) concept?

I'd rather have the Kabura with an I4 than a RX-7 redux. That's just me I guess...

I originally liked the Kabura, but it's supposed to be an MX-3! NOT an RX!

That said, I think something following Mazda's current design themes wearing an RX-9 badge would not be amiss. Especially if they extended it back to coupe/sedan/wagon/REPU. That would be nice.

-> I hope neither the Kabura nor the R&T doesn't end up an RX-7. :yuck:

-> Mazda should not get carried away with its design philosophy, I mean the RX-8 was already a border-line on my opinion. And I hope they don't ruin it.

EDIT: Bollox, WAAAY too big. Wiki previews use the same image location as the full-size counterparts it seems.

Obviously, the 7 was a fairly radical departure, changing with sports cars in general.

The 7 is dead and won't come back. An Rx-9 being powered by the new 16x would seem more likely. An RX-7 with Mazdas's current styling direction would be an abomination to the 7 name.

Mazda's Nagare line of concepts seems to show a few different brand faces, for different segments. The car at the top of the page is the Kabura concept though. And if the wiki articles means anything, it represents their sports car line, and would be an MX-4 should it hit production.

As for the R&T car, well, it doesn't look anything like a Mazda. Take the badge away, and the only things I see are the grille being a little Mazda-like and the hood giving tribute to the rotary engine also found everywhere on the RX-8.

And naming-wise, I think RX-9 is a same bet.

Neither are what an RX-7 should be like, I know this and I'm not even a Mazda fan. In fact, I would not like any of the in production at all.:yuck:

I'm beginning to wonder if Mazda didn't call the RX-8 an RX-7 because they didn't want to tamper with the name, or just because they really have two different purposes. If it is the former, I'd say we have little to fear of them calling anything new an RX-7 unless it was actually worthy of the name.

Now if only Toyota and Honda could come realize the same thing. I guess the '90s are gone.

I originally liked the Kabura, but it's supposed to be an MX-3!

As politely as I can put this, if Mazda intend that name they can 🤬 right off. Kabura? Fine. MX-4? Fine. Let's not needlessly resurrect a nameplate here.

The great thing about number systems is that if you need to bring back a name, you can tack on a number one higher. It would probably be either an RX or MX, but not one used before. And Mazda seems to know what they are doing, so I'd expect they'd have the sense not to call it something that's already been used.

It seems like that shape will grow on me over time. I agree with Jim, please don't be hybrid.....but on ANY version!! The electric turbo idea is different, but I say why bother when normal low boost turbo's have already been done on the RX-8 through the aftermarket, so the Renesis can take some boost. 👍

260hp wouldn't really shape up with that weight against other sportscar competition considering that they were already hitting the 206Kw barrier with the Series 8 FD (Spirit R) and before that with the Porsche beating RX-7 SP, both having nearly 300lbs. less weight than this upcoming model.

The RX7 was in some ways a Japanese Supercar along with the NSX, this seems like a warmed over rotarised MX5, and I agree, RX-9 seems about right with a new model name.

And as the Kabura, I'll put my money on them continuing this new renaming trend and simply call it the Mazda4. ;)

RJ, you forgot the R100, and the 12A Turbo Cosmo (aka RX6!!). ;)

Yeah, Toyota's trend of sticking electric motors in the bums of anything with wheels (Lexus, Prius, etc.) is giving them an eco-friendly 👍 but a performance 👎.
