Scion xB and xD

Toyota is going to renew its Scion brand xA and xB for the USA market. Unlike before, both replacements are no longer rebadged versions of its existing Japanese models, but they are tailor made for the American market because the brand was proved to be successful there.

Viewing from outside, the new xB looks similar to the first generation, but it is actually a whole class larger – it measures 4250mm long (old car: 3825mm), 1760mm wide (old: 1690mm) and 2600mm in wheelbase (old: 2500mm), although the height is reduced from 1640mm to 1590mm. If you have good observation, you might find these figures familiar – yes, it shares the same width and wheelbase with the new Toyota Corolla and Auris, ditto the same MacPherson struts and torsion-beam suspensions. Apparently, the xB is a derivative of the Corolla / Auris platform.

The larger body also requires a larger engine, therefore Toyota gives it the Camry's 2.4-liter VVT-i four-cylinder engine, which produces 158hp.

However, the change of Scion xB is by no means as radical as xA, because the latter is actually terminated and replaced by a new label, xD. The xD is derived from the current Toyota Yaris like its predecessor derived from the old Yaris. It is therefore slotted under xB in market positioning – the alphabetic sequence is certainly confusing.

The xD shares the same 2460mm wheelbase with Yaris, but has its length and width increased by 180mm and 30mm respectively. Like Yaris, it has a sliding rear seat to enable more rear legroom or luggage space. Power comes from Toyota's new 1.8-litre Dual-VVT-i engine rated at 128hp, much more generous than the Yaris' 1.5-litre unit.

Dude, are you within Toyota's target audience of people 18-25? No? Then get out of here. These cars are only for the funky fresh youth, not those who were born during or before the Carter administration. Reaganomics FTW!
Still here 20-something college student? Good. Now go buy a VW Rabbit. Damn kids.

Though I will admit that the new xB looks pretty awesome.

Fantastic. Anime dorks will splooge over the XD.

-> The xB IS STILL a rebaged version of the Toyota bB in Japan:

^ Talk about a scam there, but I'm still trying to find out about the xD on which Toyota was it based from. But I think the xD is based on the Toyota Auris that the rest of the world has.

^ Scion denies any resemblance of its cars to their JDM counterparts, what a load of crap. But I may be wrong thou. :indiff:

The bB is definitely uglier than the xB.

I was all excited for cars named _D and _E, not another B. That isn't how the alphabet goes. Imagine if a seven year old were in class and recited the alphabet A, B, C, B, D. The teacher would become enraged because he a) skipped E through Z and, b) repeated B twice. That's what Toyota is doing.

^ Well I am an Anime fan, and I never like Scions. I'd take the Honda Fit anyday. Those cars are JDM-wannabes. :yuck:

Ugly. The only good looking Scion is still the tC. End of discussion.

Wooo! I like them all very much, me = future Scion driver, or maybe I can get my mom to buy one.... :D

The xD is based off the Yaris... the Auris is your next Corolla, and it's a whole size larger.

Don't suppose there's anything much to get excited about xD-wise, never really rated the Yaris much (though it's actually a decent handler, with the right components). But the increased engine size for the xB is a good thing if they want better market penetration... more parents buying them for their kids, I guess...

I'm a huge fan of the original xB, but I hated the redesign, when I saw some pics of it, last week. It actually looks very nice in that top-left pic though. I guess you need to lower it and put on big rims.

Can we arrange a 3-way?

Unless you are a girl--I don't dig sausage fests. :yuck:

You're kidding! I strongly dislike it; I think they messed up the proportions. I'm surprised you have such a strong opinion in favor of it.

I thought it was understood that it was a good looking car. The interior is also quite good--I like the tweeters in the door handles.

I thought I liked the tC til my sis got one and well if you like the feeling of driving without a front end or rear that's great. I would've gotten an xB but now Scion is pretty worthless all around.

I think it is, but I've never heard anyone express as favorable an opinion as yours. Or, apparently, as Skip's.

Nothing like a little ... AUTOerotica. Har har har! :sly: I'm here all week folks!

...I saw them in Chicago and they weren't anything to get excited about. They pretty much looked like the current models but with Camry parts thrown at them. "Whoopy doo!" I exclaimed walking by them, despite the fact that the display is rather cool. Too bad Scions have become as popular as sliced bread, as it would seem to me, ownership of these cars are neither "cool" nor "individualistic" as Scion seems to claim...

Thank god, I was afraid they'd replace you with someone like Poverty. We need all the intelligence we can get, no matter how misguided your views on styling.

I quite like the tC. It is the only scion that looks like a proper car.

It looks like we have simply gotten a new toaster and replaced the door-stop with a, um, something else.

I thought tCs were OK. I never understood why so many people liked them.

Around where I live, it's almost always driven by mid-20's to older girls.

Mostly a guys' car down here - and I frequently see them modified.
That is so weird.

And I've heard of somebody's modified tC, but I can't say for sure if I've ever seen one.

 The other day I was standing on my car-spotting corner and a good ten or eleven modded tCs drove by one after another. Scary

Agreed, the one in the top left looks actually very sweet 👍
