Last year, the hotted-up Leon FR and Cupra R models accounted for 40percent of all sales of Seat's Leon five-door hatch, and similar successes are anticipated for the new-generation versions. The new Cupra, based on the Mk2 Leon launched late last summer, has a 240bhp version of the VW Group 2.0 TFSI direct-injection, turbocharged petrol engine - that's 40bhp more than in the Golf GTI - and a six-speed gearbox. It's front-wheel drive, however, rather than four-wheel drive as originally rumoured, and no diesel version is planned (the 170bhp 2.0 TDI Leon FR will remain the most powerful diesel Leon). However, Seat's BTCC driver Jason Plato looked pretty pleased with his new company car as he peeled off the cover to reveal the Leon Cupra for the first time...

Key figures for the Leon Cupra are a top speed of 153mph, and 0-60mph acceleration in 6.4 seconds. Specification for the UK will include dual-zone climate control, front and rear electric windows, a MP3-compatible CD player, remote control central locking with deadlocks, cruise control, front fog lights, tyre pressure monitoring, side and curtain airbags, ESP and ISOFIX child seat mounting points - a pretty comprehensive kit list. Of more interest to many buyers, the Leon Cupra also gets unique bumpers, sports seats and steering wheel, chrome exhaust tailpipes, lowered sports suspension, Brembo brakes and 18-inch alloys. Options include rear side airbags, Bluetooth phone kit and bi-xenon headlights.

So it's quick - very quick for a small family-sized hatch - and well-equipped, but best news is that the Leon Cupra is going to be excellent value for money as well. We already know that the FR models are going to cost £16,995 (200bhp 2.0 TFSI petrol) and £17,495 (2.0 TDI), and the Cupra's not going to be too much dearer. Expect a price at around the £20,000 mark when sales start in February 2007, though this will be firmed-up nearer the launch.

For us youngsters, and track enthusiasts the Golf GTI is now redundant. I wonder how much power the Leon Cupra R will be packing if or when it gets released!

There's still a chance we'll see one or more or those engines stateside. The 240 hp TFSI sounds like a winner, and that 170 horse TDI...well...YES, PLEASE! :D

170bhp and a BILLION lb. ft. of torque. 👍

I really like that car, and it could well become my next one, but only if the Cupra get's the 3.2l V6 and AWD. :irked:

I would be nice if SEAT was brought to the States to compete in a affordable-performance class. Maybe something along the lines of Scion's being sold through the Toyota dealership. The problem would be, in my opinion, that people would neglect the GTI (as Poverty has stated as well) and other performance VW's. Once again...

If only the US had a greater appreciation for smaller vehicles.

That will never happen as long as pickup trucks, SUVs, and minivans rule the road. Oh and it also won't happen until gas gets to be Euro prices either. :indiff:

Give VAG some time to consider what is going on and they may throw us the Polo depending on how well cars like the Versa, Fit, Yaris and Kalos/Aveo/Viva sell.

I'm all for it. Give us the Polo with the 1.4L TDI and call it a day...
