new to forum, what does PAL mean?

Hi i have been reading up a lot since last night, one thing i was looking for was a used car list which i found. i was lookgin to see if there were any BMW E36 M3's in the used car lots but i found that there is not.. i came across used car list that was awesome but also keep seeing peopel say PAL version.. what does PAL mean?
 
PAL is the European standard for broadcast television signals. In the US they use NSTC. On this forum people often use the term to differentiate between the different version of GT4. The majority of differences are in the car lists.

PAL = "Worldwide" standard. 625 horizontal lines refreshing 50 times per second.
NTSC = US/Japan standard. 525 horizontal lines refreshing 60 times per second.

PAL images are clearer, NTSC images move more smoothly.
 
So NTSC and PAL are both associations and a type of resolution? (Sorry, I don't know the correct term)
 
They're both broadcast standards - named after different things (NTSC - a committee, PAL - a technology).

DON'T ask about SECAM.

NTSC is also an abbreviation for "Never The Same Color." :lol:

NTSC TV's have a "tint" adjustment, and PAL TV's don't.

Also, isn't PAL 16:9, as opposed to NTSC's 4:3?
 
No reason for it to have a tint setting anyway.

No, there are region codes to prevent foreign game versions to be played on your PS2. However, technically the PAL PS2 is capable of producing an NTSC picture, and I suppose NTSC consoles will do a PAL picture as well. So, if your PS2 is modded to play foreign games, it'll work fine with both kinds.

PAL means that you have to wait longer while annoying black bars are put at the top & bottom of the game. :P
 
yup. That can be fixed by repositioning the picture on the screen in-game. Most games offer this. Or you could chip your PS2 and import a NTSC game.

Yes, but you need several PS2 versions.
As Famine explained, NTSC and PAL are the two major broadcasting standards used all over the world.
NTSC is used mostly in the US and in Japan while PAL is used by the rest of the world (Ok, this is a rough approximation).

Video consoles and games are released in different versions : NTSC-J (for Japan), NTSC-US (for the US), and PAL which are not compatible.
So if you bought your PS2 in the US you can only use NTSC-US games (unless you install a chip).
That means that real game maniacs buy 3 consoles ;)
