New Transmission

I've decided that my car needs a new transmission. I finally went down to a transmission repair that did free diagnostics and they decided that something to do with engaging my 3rd gear was leaking and eventually it would explode (read as: no longer work) and that i should drive it into the ground then either go back to the guy to get a new transmission or install one myself, and i'm trying to decide which option to take. The car is already dead, it can move itself in first gear up down and around but I'm using a relative's truck right now.

I wanted to know how I can find a remanufactured transmission off of the Ford website or something, and where I can find a U-Pick place in western washington. The guy I went to have diagnose the transmission says that he will replace it working and everything for $1,500. I'm having a little difficulty finding things here.

It's a 1995 Ford Taurus Sedan 3.8 L V6 GL trim.
 
$1500 is far and away too expensive for an AXOD replacment; the guts to rebuild it cost approx. 2-300 bucks, the rest would be labor... Flat rate might put it there but we all know it takes far less time than flat rate to do one of those transmissions.

Although, talk to him about how much it would cost you to have him just R&R the transmission (remove and replace), add the price of a reman or used-yet-low-mileage trans, and see which comes out cheaper.
 
He says that he has the exact transmission that I need just laying around on a shelf that he was paid to rebuild, but the owner never came to pick it up.

what is an AXOD replacement?
 
AXOD = the transmission you have.

Further, if he has the transmission laying around it really IS just an R&R job already, therefore you're being overcharged massively.
 
Weeellll then. I can say that I have friends who have the equipment needed to do this kind of job so you would suggest that I just go to like a U-pick or something and get a re-man transmission and install it myself? The tranny guy said that it's kind of a pain getting the tranny out because he said that you have to remove the engine to get at it. While my uncle said that all you have to do is kind of twist the engine and it lets you yank it out. after disconnecting certain vital parts of course.
 
Ask the guy if you can buy the transmission off him and do the rest yourself, with a U-Pick part (assuming its like our pick-a-part) you dont know the quality of the part, it could be in the same condition as your gearbox. As you know the tranny at the shop's been rebuilt, then its probably the better bet
 
All right, so the national consensus is that I should ask the Transmission guy to just buy the thing off of him, uninstall and reinstall the transmission myself, and sell the core back to the guy?
