I've been doing some research and I haven't been able to find anything to help so I figured I would ask here and see if anyone has some tips.

I have been playing GT5 on a 32 inch flat screen for a long time, and I recently upgraded to an LG 47 inch LED with 3D. All of my other games look fantastic, but for some reason GT5 does not. Letters on the screen look blocky and while on track lines on the pavement become jagged as they go off in the distance, fences and trees look distorted etc. Enabling 3D makes everything look worse, again the opposite case with my other games.

I've tried adjusting the setting on my TV as well as in GT5 to no avail. Has anyone experienced the same thing or have any tips?

Have you tried adjusting the Set Display Size in the options menu of GT5?

Yeah I have, but I'm not sure it makes a difference. It was set at 95% on my 32 inch and it is still set to the same value on my 47 inch. I tried moving it up and down but things still are not as sharp as they are on my 32 inch.

Dose your tv have a game setting some new tv's have a movie setting game setting and other settings in you menu ?

Yeah I tried that as well, it just has the same adjustments for different inputs but still has the same issue

First of all, make sure you're using an HDMI connection from the PS3 to the TV. Next, re-run the automatic display settings on your PS3 under video output settings - make sure 1080p is enabled.

Next (and this is really important), disable overscan on your TV settings, this essentially enables 1:1 pixel mapping between the PS3 and the TV, which gives you the best display quality. There's an option called "Just Scan" on most LG TVs, this is what you want to use - no zooming and no cropping of the edges of the image.

On the GT5, do not use any of the zoom options, set the display to 100%.

I'd also suggest that you get a blu-ray calibration disc and use that to optimize your display settings.

edit: A few other suggestions - turn off all video processing crap that TV manufacturers like to add, such as trumotion (frame interpolation), auto contrast and all that other garbage, which IMO, are useless. This will have the added benefit of reducing screen lag.

Thanks for the info 👍

I am using an HDMI cable, one of the TV experts at BestBuy told me HDMI makes a big difference. I've had the HDMI cable from Sony since I first bought my original 60GB (I have a slimline now) so I bought the Monster 1000 cable but returned it after seeing no difference. I'm pretty sure I ran the display settings the first time I connected my PS3 to the TV but it couldn't hurt to run it again.

As far as the zoom optics in the game menu, I had GT5 set at 95% on my old tv and it fit the TV edges perfectly and looked great. If it set it at 100% wont it cut off the game image at the edge of the screen?

I will try disabling the TV settings you mentioned. I'm not sure I have an overscan or "just scan" you were talking about but I believe trumotion is on.

I'll do some more fiddling, thanks again 👍

Edit - Tried changing the zoom to 100%, made no difference and cut the edge of the image off the screen. I re-setup the display settings on the console, still no help. I tried searching the TV and Google for the overscan settings you were talking about, and as far as I know there is no way to adjust it. I also tried turning the trumotion off, but the TV is set to game mode for my PS3 input, so it was greyed out and already turned off.

I'm about out of ideas, really frustrating because GT5 is the only game I'm having an issue with :grumpy:

fiddle with the sharpness, turn it down some

Tried this as well. All it did was make things off in the distance look fuzzy. Even put the picture quality on normal in the GT options.

I may try to post some pictures so I can better describe what I'm experiencing.

Hmmmmmm its a strange one this, you say all your other games look fine. Gt does take a hit when yo turn 3d on but other than hat it's usually very sharp. I would suggest maybe turning the sharpness down on your tv.

What's the exact model of your TV?

It the 47" LG LM6700

runfast1
Return LG and get a SONY

No can do. Brother works for Best Buy, in was able to pick this TV up for $600 open box.

Just for some more info here are the other games I've played that look fine (amazing actually)

Battlefield 3
Uncharted 3
Medal of Honor War Fighter
Dead Island

All these games look amazing, as does the picture when watching TV. Uncharted 3 also looks crisp and detailed in 3D. For the life of me I can't figure out why GT5 looks so bad. It's like the anti-aliasing is broken or something.

I have a 32 inch Samsung LCD, it has picture size option ( 16:9, 4:3, Just Scan, Zoom, Wide Zoom ) Your LG TV should have something similar, I set mine around 95% as well in GT5, then set picture size on my Samsung to 16:9 to make it full screen, still sharp as 100% on GT5 and Just Scan ( 1:1 ) on my TV. Hope this helps.

Try to disable any picture sharpness enhancement, like in my TV, edge enhancement, coupled with high sharpness settings, it makes the pixel edges rough and jaggies.

Having less screen size setting in GT5 seems to give better average frame rates, for example, London races seems to have less tearing near the big round about, rain conditions also seems more fluid, maybe it's just my feeling :D

Was your other TV only 720p? I hate to say this but maybe the increase in screen size or increase in resolution is just bringing out faults with GT5. I stopped playing it a long time ago because of the horrible screen tearing I got and bad AA if there even is any. It doesn't make any sense that all the other games look great and GT5 looks bad unless it's just that GT5 looks bad. You shouldn't have to change settings to make one console game look good on your TV if every other game looks fine.

The only thing I can think of is to go to the PS3 browser and find some video calibraiton tools and calibrate your TV with it. One thing any decent calibration disk will have you do with modern HDTVs is turn your sharpness all the way down if it's a decent TV. Sharpness is bad unless your TV is just awful and can't make a crisp picture without it. I have yet to calibrate a TV in the last 7 or 8 years that beeded any sharpness at all to pass the calibration tests.

To much brightness can also cause problems like you are talking about, as well as high contrast. I would bet though that you are just seeing GT5 on a higher quality and bigger TV for the first time and it's not looiking as good as the other games.

Could just be that your new TV only supports smaller resolutions like 720p etc And the image is getting stretched across the 47" inches. Therefore there is some pixelization. Btw sorry if that was mentioned before, I didn't read the above posts.

cnet is the only site I've seen give this TV bad reviews so idk what that's all about. The picture quality is amazing (IMO) when playing other games and watching DirecTV and movies.

My 32" was 1080i and this TV is 1080p. Not sure if this would make any difference. I did just FINALLY find where to change the aspect ratio so I will give that a go quick and report back shortly.

🤬!!! I'm literally out of ideas. Switching between 16:9, Just Scan, Zoom, 4:3, etc made absolutely no difference. I can't fricken believe it. I really thought that's what I was missing. It just doesn't make any sense that all my other games look just as good on my 32" and GT looks terrible(ish)

Thanks to everyone that posted and tried to help. I think I'm just gonna have to deal with it :grumpy:

Edit 2:

*facepalm* I just lugged my old 32 inch TV downstairs and re-setup GT5 on it to try and double verify what I was experiencing. Turns out all the jaggies and such were there all along, I just didn't notice them because of the smaller screen size.

I apologize for wasting everyone's time. I feel pretty dumb

Glad you figured it out... one last suggestion, go back and use Just Scan for your aspect ratio, then change your GT5 display setting to 100%.

Yup, already did that. I almost can't believe GT5 doesn't have better anti-aliasing. Even more I can't believe how much more profound it is on a bigger TV.

Thanks again for all the help everyone 👍
