So, if as reports suggest that the dude from General Motors is serious about the specifications... how fast do you think this vehicle will go?

The new Astra VXR is expected to be based on the Astra GTC '10. It has a 283BHP 2.0l Delta-II Turbo Petrol lump. The previous Astra VXR carried 234BHP and managed 152MPH and 0-60MPH in 6.2s.

283hp in a FWD = understeer only Chuck Norris can handle.

With those numbers I expect it to torque steer into a tree.

That's a gross generalisation.

We have very many excellent hedges, lamp-posts and walls.

Well now I expect it to torque steer into Famine's house. :p

But no, really if that's the specs you're going to have some bad torque steer. If you've even read one article on the MazdaSpeed3 (283hp, FWD, 0-60 in 5.7) one of the most prominent things in the article is torque steer. Does anyone have a photo of the car?

Is GM using Struts with Pivots at the bottom instead of the top, though? That's what makes the Focus not torque steer.

Either that, or they've gone back to the '60s and are using chains to drive the wheels.

((See Toronado/Eldorado))

Toro/Eldo/Riv had a chain going from the engine to the transmission, not from the trans to the driveshafts.

Unless this has a different suspension setup than the rest of the Astra line, it's still a step behind the Golf and Focus. Lotus helped with the last VXR, to get the power down cleanly, but it hasn't been mentioned if they're helping with this generation.

I don't expect it to be a lot faster to 60... people are forgetting that the current model is fat as all hell. Infact, pretty sure it's the heaviest in its class, by a large margin.

I was wondering about that. I thought that the car weighed a couple hundred kgs more than the previous one across the board.

But that's when talking about the 5 doors right? The OPC/VXR model would be more than likely be the GTC model though, which isn't available yet. Although they did reveal it :)

looks pretty good to me

Your point?

Look at most lineups of 3 and 5 door hatches, the weight differences between the two are small. This car's going to be getting a heavier engine, bigger wheels, and bigger brakes, and various other things. To keep it class-competitive we won't see crazy amounts of de-contenting or exotic materials either.

I really am curious what Opel's doing to make the Astra so heavy. Is there a few bricks of lead hidden somewhere or something? It looks good but to weigh as much as an M3 is just ridiculous.

It accumulates weight from other cars on account of it sucking so hard.

Looks an awful lot like a Scirocco to me, which is no bad thing. But then again, if I wanted a car that looked like a Scirocco I'd probably buy....a Scirocco.

Just another sheep in wolf's clothing.

Created for a few more sales....Ford have just done it with that overpowered Focus.

The Engineers must be so bored with such little freedom.

The Focus disagrees with you.

The car is expected to incorporate a double wishbone suspension system simular to the race spec VXR BTCC team which is not too disimular to the Focus RS-500.

Reports are that the non-VXR 3 door handles very well, so it has a sound base to work from.

It will also be getting the HI-Per stuts from the Insignia to help with the Torque steer, so we shall see. It can be done, but that is very different to it will be done.
