new Youtube App for PS3

I just discovered this in the 'What's New?' section. We all know you can already watch Youtube videos on the PS3's Internet Browser, but the app is a free download, so I decided to check it out. After downloading (a small 22MB only) and installing, the app will be available for use in the TV/Video Services category of the XMB.

First of all, the interface is over-simplified (and somewhat confusing). It's not like the interface you see when you access Youtube on a PC. All videos are already sorted to categories: Youtube Trends, Most Popular, Music, Games, Sports etc. , but the search function is a bit crappy. You have to use the App's UI to scroll through the characters and enter text into the search box, as the PS3's pop-up text window doesn't appear. That means you can't use a keyboard to make entering text faster. But, the search function does have predictive text, like in the PC UI, like if you're going to type in "GRAN TU", the predictive text will suggest "GRAN TURISMO" or other related titles.

Then the time comes to watch a video. If you want to see a video, highlight the video then just press Circle. The video UI is somewhat confusing. It appears every L or R button, or pressing left or right on the D-pad leads me to the next video (which is really weird ) there are Fast Forward and Rewind functions on the UI, but I can't seem to select and/or utilize them.

I am sorry to hear that. Strange really as the Youtube app on the Vita is quite brilliant in terms of ease of use. I hope the patch certain things.

Is this US only? I don't see it in the EU store or anywhere.

What I hate about youtube in the PS3 browser is that if you click a link it tries to open it with YouTube XL but it doesn't work, just opens the general XL page and not the video you click on.

It's alright using ps3youtube.com if you just want to find videos but clicking a link in a page just doesn't work, for me at least.

To fix it, delete the user=Watch (Something like that) from the URL. Then click "View in standard Youtube" then links in pages will work.

Can anyone tell me if this app allows / shows playback of video's with licenced music used or music videos like Vevo? because normally they don't which wipes out like 70% of the content out there.

That's always been the flaw with YouTube apps as opposed to the normal website making it basically useless.

You said it. It's very confusing. They should have made it almost like the PC UI, with a pointer that you can move around and click stuff with.

I haven't tried viewing a Vevo video yet, but I think I saw some Vevo videos appearing in the 'Most Popular' and 'Entertainment' categories.

The app has been working fine for me since day one. It has never crashed, quality is good, and navigation gets really easy once you get used to it.

This app really does nothing for me. They need to fix the way you search they could make it like it is on android phones it would look and feel way better. More updates need to happen for me to actually use it. I am going to continue to download YouTube videos to my phone and put them on my ps3 and then watch them (which takes 2-3 minutes)

Well, that settles it then. No way in hell am I downloading a useless unpleasant app in order to watch videos that the only reason I can't watch is that I am blocked from watching them unless I download the app. 🤬 you, Sony. I'll just wait until I'm at my PC.


On a somewhat related note, I can't stand how so many sites redirect the PS3 browser to the stripped-down mobile versions of their sites. In every case it has happened to me, the real site works just fine and has more functionality... and most of the time the mini versions don't even work right.

Its awful, i crying shame compared to the Vita app when it comes to navigation and searching. Why can't I use the vita to control youtube on my PS3? That would be epic....

I don't use the internet browser on the PS3 as it's excruciatingly slow.

Still can't get the App to work for me.

I was able to access and watch YouTube now on the broswer again, no more of having to download the app.

Damn, that app is a P O S. Absolutely horrible! I can play full HD with Netflix without breaking a sweat. Web browsing, online gaming, downloading, and everything else works like a champ on my PS3. With the YouTube app it just stutters in both sounds and video. The auto complete in searching is also worthless. Plus the results are limited. Why is there no on screen keyboard? What is up with scrolling the top just to type? The PS3 already has a good on screen keyboard. Why ditch that? The Xbox app actually plays it with no problems. Well like with all YouTube apps the interface is still garbage but still better than the PS3. Whoever designed and approved it should be shot. Can't believe that they even blocked it through the web browser, forcing you to download and use their trash app. By the way, even my old Sony media box plays YouTube just fine.

Luckily I found the way around it like everyone else has. Even though the quality takes a major hit it still has all the features like it should, no issues whatsoever. I can still live with 240p. I am glad it is not blocked.



I had to throw my comment in after being so disgusted with the app. For those saying to ignore it and just use your PC for web or youtube....you just don't get it!

The app is garbage. I absolutely hate it.
I still go through the browser to view videos on my ps3.

I don't know how they messed that app up so bad and made it so good on the phones.

I used that app on the ps3 twice and never did again. I will continue to use the ps3's Web browser to watch YouTube videos
