Hey guys I'm new here. Been playing gran turismo for a while but mainly single player or head to head. My question is about LAN parties. To put it simply, how do I do it lol? Me and some friends have always wanted to, but we don't know what all is needed etc. I know there used to be some kinda i-link thing right? But do they make em anymore? I also searched on google and found something about being able to have LAN parties using our netwrok adapters  I hate to ask a question in my first post but I honestly have no clue how to set one up and what all is needed, so if someone could give me a hand I'd appreciate it. Say, what all I would need for a 6 people one, where to get the stuff, and how much (I might have to get teh friends to pitch in if it's expensive).

Thanks again, lookin forward to hangin out here 👍

I know that Sony took the I-link port off the new PS2's (PSX or am I just confused?), so if you have a new one (last couple months), then no LAN for you. Other than that, I think that you just need the I-link cable, which is just firewire. Then, you grab onto a Firewire hub and start plugging things in. But....if you want 6 people, then you'll need 6 PS2's (with the I-link) and a 6 (or more) port firewire hub. Not to mention 6 TV's. As far as I know, that's how it's done. But before you go out to buy 5 more TV's, you may want to wait for someone more knowledgable to come around.

And...welcome to GTP :)

Thanks. I won't be buyin a bunch of tv's lol, my friends will just have to haul over their own lol. How do I check to see if mine is i-link compatible? how much is that hub and fire wire? and can I get it at my local best buy/circuit city etc? Thanks again, sorry for all the questions.

Okay, here's all you'll need:

1. An i.Link hub
2. i.Link cable
3. Appropriate number of TVs, copies of the game and PS2s. Players help as well.

To get these things (the hub and wiring), your local computer shop should carry them. A Radio Shack or FutureShop usually has these cables and hubs for a fair price. I warn you now, though, that these things aren't cheap, and if they are, you may want to check for brand names. Belkin makes great cables, but I know not of hubs.

Side note: A LAN party is done with computers. For those you need usually a 100 Mbps hub, RJ45 cable, and many PCs with the same games on them. CounterStrike, Unreal Tournament and other FPS are common favourites at LAN parties. I think NFS: Underground is LAN capable on the PC as well.

Further to Trueno's answer to get n playstations linked together you need

n playstations with an i.link port. (This small socket can be found next to the two USB ports on the front of the PS2. If you don't have one on your PS2, you can't ilink that machine.
1 firewire hub
n firewire cables that have a plug to match the one on your PS2 to the one on your hub
n TVs and copies of the game

ilink can link up to 6 PS2s, and you get all the tracks except the wet tracks where you can link only 4 machines and the rally tracks which can only link two. The other big limitation for ilink is that you can only run Arcade and not garage cars.

A word of warning: ilink is a dead technology and my suspicion is that GT4 will release with a network mode using the network adaptor, which requires an ethernet hub and cables.

Wow. I didn't know that, that sucks. What about if you direct connect 2 PS2's? Does that have the same problem? Also. If you have 2 PS2's and to screens. Can you play 4 player i.e split-screen on each?

If you direct connect two machines using an ilink cable, the normal ilink restrictions still apply. You cannot run 4 players on two machines, if you're ilinking it's one per machine.

For one thing I find it refreshing that there are still people out there that dont come to a place thinking they know everything. In my opinion asking a few questions instead of throwing a buch of useless junk out there is the best way to show your competance and earn respect. Not like I'm anything but new here as well. And for all I can remember my first post was probably something like "THE GT AUTHORITY, ANSERS TO ALL YOUR GT QUESTIONS"

But on that note...

I know that Sony took the I-link port off the new PS2's (PSX or am I just confused?)

The PSX, at least in america, Is what there calling the original playstation. The PS One is the smaller version of that that came out after the PS2, which is the current system. And a smaller version of the PS2, rumered to be called the PS Two, is in the works. and as far as i know it still has the I-Link.

You need a Firewire cable for_each_ console.
A full Arcade mem-card for each console helps.
A surge-protected powerbar for each console would help, too.
A power circuit capable of the power drain is essential (6 TV, consoles, wheels, etc.). A 15 amp circuit will probably be enough, depending on the TVs. Just don't start up a 1100 Watt microwave oven, at the same time they are all turned on.

I just bought a 6-port CP Tech hub for $56 CDN, 15' cables are only $12. Monster PlayStation 555 joule powerbars are $10.

A GT3 LAN party is just that, a party based on a GT3 Firewire LAN, even if the more common usage is based on Ethernet based PCs.

Cheers,

MasterGT
