Newbie to these forums...

Sup everyone my name is Tim, I'm new to these forums, and I actually stumbled across this site by accident while looking for drifting movies. I have been drifting in GT3 for like almost 2 years now, and it's pretty cool to have found this site. I would like to help out and maybe even learn some things from you guys as well. As for my personal facts I own a 1985 Corolla GTS Coupe and I'm a member of Club4ag.com (Dorifto-san) I have been into drifting and touge for almost 2 years now. If anyone lives in the Orange County, CA area... then hit me up for some dorifto-battle action!! I would love to see the skills of other people on the boards... I am going to see if one of my video editing buddies can help me take a couple of my runs and edit them to post up here. I can be contacted at:
Nightvelocity@hotmail.com

Thanx Guys
-Tim W.

Welcome to GTPlanet, Tim. Great to finally see someone that owns an AE86 other than myself. I have a 1986 Sprinter Trueno Hatch-back (I live in Japan), and my father (3S-GTE swap) and best friend have AE86's as well. My best friend just finished his TRD Formula Atlantic Spec AE86 Levin about a month ago (I do some work at TRD and got a great deal on the parts). I've been driving mine since 1995, I put the 4A-GE from an AE-101 Levin about a year ago and did some work on it to make it push out about 210-220ps. If you want pictures, check out my site in my profile. Do you have any modifications done to your AE86?

-Tom

Welcome, welcome, and feel free to pic up an animated gif avatar a couple threads down in the post buy me. ;) BTW, nice to see a real drifter into GT3 drifting..been to club4AG.com a number of times checking out the awesome Hachi's you guys have. :D

Welcome! All these RL drifters I keep seeing are making me jealous hehe. I need to find a job so I can pick up a 240sx and sell my Accord.
I'd love to see some videos of you drifting IRL, I love watching amateurs drift because it's more realistic and more interesting IMO, all I ever really see in videos is D1 drifting and they're all pros with crazy expensive cars that push out 400hp etc hehe.
Anyway..again..Welcome!

Hey dorifto-san! Maybe you recognize me from Club4AG too? =) I also own an '85 GT-S (hatch) and, well, I love it!! I'm never going back to a FWD car, it just ain't right. It's like driving a lowered pickup.

Anyway, welcome to GTP! This forum isn't quite as serious about preserving the pristine image of drifting, per se, but as long as you have an open mind everyone here is very cool and honestly I often find this forum more interesting than Club4AG. Hope you stick around and I can't wait to see some of you videos! You've been drifting in GT3 much longer than me or even anyone else that I know of on this forum, so I'm sure we could probably learn something from you as well (not to put any pressure on you or anything).

You should read the thread named I Need A Ae86! Finders Fee If Located! and you can find out more about Deity of Drift ;)

Thank You everyone for the kind welcoming... I hope to get some videos up soon, since I just got DSL back! (WHOO HOO!!) So yeah about my corolla... it's a 85' GTS Coupe that I stripped the interior including all the sound deadener so it's freagin loud inside. I haven't really done any suspension work other than putting in some negative roll center adjusters and lowering springs. The engine is an AE92 Red top Hi-comp engine with no P/S, A/C, or C/C on it. I just swapped this in myself a couple of months ago, but it's really hard to pay for stuff when you don't have a job anymore :banghead:

I am intending on putting the TVIS back onto the engine because the low rpm torque sux badly. I am currently trying to diagnose whats wrong with the engines electronics, as it seems to hit the rev limiter at 3800rpm?! But yeah, that will be fixed by the end of the week.
The car is silver with black bumpers, and a set of 14X6 Black Racings all the way around, wrapped in some ****ty falken ziex tires. I need to figure out how to post pics here, and then I will post a pic of my retarded ass standing on my car. I am going to be putting everything that a friend of mines company sells for suspension... please check out his stuff at:
http://ggtyler.com/
Thanx Guys

if your rev limiter is set that low..your ecu is probably running in limp mode. there's something that isn't connected that needs to be...(could be an o2 sensor, could be a vacume line) but until you fix it, the ecu won't let you damage that engine by revving it high :P

TVIS = good
Especially if you have a nice intake and can hear it opening up *druel*

Oh yeah, and Gabe's stuff is the shiznit. I wouldn't buy anything else no matter how much cheaper. Gabe knows what's up.

CRAZY i didnt know you live in japan? wow. are you japanese? if so you can understand english?? WOW cool.

I'm Italian, I look nothing like an Asian, I was born in NY and moved here when I was around 13 I think, therefore I get confused with tourists sometimes. But a lot of the kids out here are starting to respect that I'm a "round-eye" that can whoop their ass in a touge battle. ;)

That could be a number of problems, not just the TVIS. At my shop, I have a diagnostics program just for the 4A-GE. But I can't say anything due to your car not being in front me right now.

Hey pergatory, didn't know you have an AE86 as well. Any modifcations done to it?

-Tom

Hey Dorifto-san,

Welcome to GTPlanet and enjoy your stay here. I'm sure that you will really enjoy our drifting community here as it has grown very popular. There are many knowledgeable drifters here!

Welcome,

Boom

Thanx everyone, I am going to change my distributor, tps, ignitor, and put a TVIS manifold onto the engine, if all else fails, I will sell my wheels and pick up a complete MAP setup and see if that helps.
-Tim

i think u sholud be call TAKUMI Deity of Drift ... j/k

Haha, I don't possess his skill, but I will one of these days.

I'm curious of your car Dorifto-san. What happened to the original 4A-GE? I see you have an AE92 4A-G in your AE86. It's the same engine, only used longitudally.

Yeah, redtop (small port), momo steering wheel (I hate the stock one it's too big), smashed in rear fender, crooked front bumper =)
Had an unfortunate experience (I think I posted it somewhere on Club4AG don't feel like writing it all over again) but basically it's considered "totalled" even though the suspension geometry is still all good to go, but after that kinda lost interest in any serious upgrades. Since then I've just put a stereo in, a ham radio, stuff like that, things that can be easily removed. I practice drifting occassionally and I'd like to think I'm doing well for how long I've been doing it but I wish I had the time & money to get some more track time and some real experience...
I think ultimately I am going to get a 240SX and do a Silvia or Sil-80 conversion (depending on whichever style 240 I end up with). I have a friend with an S13 Silvia conversion and I really like it. But I am still tempted to get another 86 just because of the sheer amount of upgrades you can get for the suspension. I really wanna know what a completely decked out 86 feels like. That and of course the way the car handles to begin with...

Well, people consider my AE86 to be fully tuned. AE-101 20V silver-top tuned by the best parts TRD has to offer. It's pretty high power for a normal engine (only 20ps less than Group A). I said before, that my dad is a tuning genius. When I drift, it scares people. That usual responce I get when I open my hood to someone is the phrase "holy sh!!." And when I take that someone for a little test drive around Tsukuba, Sugo, or Fuji. I get the phrase "oh my God get me out of here!" I wish I had a video camera, or even a regular camera so I can take update photos. The ones on my site are about 2 years old. Just make sure if you get an S13, get rid of the engine that comes with the U.S. models, and swap a nice CA18/SR20 in it. The AE86 is a great car, but it takes more than skill to win using it. I think since you don't really have a whole lot of track time, an S13 would be the best idea for you. So you guys goto Club4AG a lot. I don't like some of the people on that site. The reason being is because my friend in Florida asked questions about the Group A that I couldn't answer. And everyone chastized him for being a little Initial D fanboy or whatever they called him. And when I used to be on there, I commented on living in Japan, and everyone was in disbelief and eventually made me hate people on that site. ;)

-Tom

I would get a Silvia front clip and use the SR20DET for sure. Sounds like you've got quite a nice car! 220hp? That's a lot more than the D1 guys. Too bad I can't check it out in real life! I'd love to go for a ride =)

I haven't been drifting in real life for very long, only 3 months. However, I'm learning faster in real life than I did in GT3. So who knows, maybe in a year or two my real life drifting will surpass my GT3 drifting, which I'd like to think is fairly good already. I have done lots of drifting in the rain and find it very similar to GT3, I have only spun out 5 times so far and only hit anything once (concrete barrier of all things). 2 of those spinouts were on a 200° uphill off-camber corner, my first two tries. That corner taught me a lesson about throttle control...

Anyway, I know what you mean about Club4AG. A lot of those guys are a little immature if you ask me. They have a lot of angst. They're really pissed off that drifting is becoming popular so they hate everything that contributes to that (like Initial D and people asking questions about Initial D). It's pretty sad really, because most of the real enthusiasts don't even bother anymore as a result.

iam almost 16 and i was wondering how much does a 86 cost to import
and welcome tim
sorry for the late welcome

The 220ps is just an estimate. I've never been on a dyno before, but I'm going to try and hit one tomorrow. My dad dynoed his car... he has a lot more power than the D1 guys in his AE86. He has a 3S-GTE in it, and last time I rode with him... I can't even explain it. From my experience I would say me dad's car has well over 400ps. It's just insane what he did to his car.

My skills in R/L I think are better than my skills in GT3, or Kaido Battle (I just found out you guys don't get this game). I, like everyone else, started in the rain. It's easier for a low power car to have the rear lose traction in the rain, and it saves your tyres. Concrete barrier... that sucks. The only thing I've hit when I was on a pass, was the guardrails... like 10 times. About Club4AG, I don't know why they get pissed when something they love doing is getting popular. It's been popular here for almost 10 years. It was kept secretly with all the street racers, and then somebody decides on making a damn cartoon about it. That's when it blew up in popularity. I understand getting mad when people ask about Initial D on those forums, but my friend only asked about the price of the TRD Group A 4A-GE, and people started calling him Takumi, and all these other names. The reason he asked there, was because I can't get a price on that engine. So from that day on, I never returned to that site.

Are you sure you want this as a first car? And why would you want to import one? They were built in the U.S. as a 1985-1987 Toyota Corolla GT-S. But to be honest, this isn't the car you think it is. I posted a LONG time ago on a post called "I need a AE86" on reasons why this car isn't what people think it is. And it's a lot of money to import... more than the car. And chances are you won't be able to drive it on the streets.

-Tom

Well, I have an AE92 Redtop 16V engine in my corolla, nothing much done to it, I am not really going to focus on putting much more power into the car, since I would like to get accustomed to the car with near-stock horsepower. I am looking for a new job right now, as I quit my last job as a mechanic at a local import performance shop that really sucked, but as soon as the cash starts coming in again, I am going to put front and rear strut tower bars, 4-link rear suspension system, new springs and shocks (although i havent decided what company on those yet), and a few other little bits and pieces to the suspension. I was going to get a stock LSD rear end from the junkyard or something, but since I touge alot, I am going to wait a little bit before installing it... cuz getting sideways when you don't expect in the mountains can really **** you up if you don't know what your doing... and honestly, I am not ready for mountain drifting. But yeah, I'm going to just go ahead and take some pics of my car today for you guys, and post it up later.

3S-GTE is pretty nice, are those very easy to find over there? They're impossible to find here... Hahah, have you seen that guy with the 20b in his 86? That's rediculous! Almost too much, if there was such a thing. Are highway battles very common over there? I see the occassional clip but nothing to indicate how often it actually happens. I'm not talkin like US-style stock Integra vs stock 240, I'm talkin 180+ mph battles.

yeah..they had a issue of sport compact car about their battles at high speed. they talked about an R34 and JZA80 goin at it over 300km/h :D

Yeah the 3S-GTE is common. Most people don't know how to drive an MR car, so they end up hitting something and totaling the front of the car, leaving the engine in perfect condition. That's how most people get theres, but my dad got his through a company. The 20B AE86. That thing... is just insane. Over 600ps. I saw on T.V. a thing on it. It's one of the top contenders on the highway. 600+ps in that car, isn't the smartest thing for track racing and mountain battles. Well it could be. Highway battles happen everyday of the week. The cops don't bother trying to catch them, so the police installed speed sensitive cameras that get the speeders license plate. But if you're going over 180km/h (might be over 180), the cameras will miss, and you get away. Clips aren't very common due to nobody wanting to record them going over 270km/h. If the police got a hold on one, and found out who was driving, not only does their car get destroyed, their license as well gets destroyed. When companies like JUN or Top Fuel test their cars for top speed on the highway, they notify the police about it, and make sure that they pick a time where nobody is on the road. I'm not talkin like US-style stock Integra vs stock 240, I'm talkin 180+ mph battles.  Is that the typical race over there? Sad... People have gotten well over 300km/h (180mph). The record for a street car is somewhere around 330km/h. Held by a BNR34. I've never seen him, but it's just things that people tell me. But they race everyday. The reason I don't do it, is because my car doesn't achieve a very high top speed. AE86's weren't built for that. But once in a while, if I'm really, really bored. I'll go out at 4AM and just let all my anger go on the highway. 5th gear, 9100rpm, you know... the good stuff. But it's fun, just dangerous. I like drifting because it usually doesn't involve any non-racers (highway = public = lots of people). People nowadays are smart and will make sure that races aren't going on before they go on the passes. But once in a while you will get the occasional old guy that doesn't know anything, and will mess up a race by being on the pass while people are racing. It's happened a lot recently.

To give you an idea of the racing scene over here in the states, my last car was a very lightly modified '92 Saab 9000 Turbo. Probably ran about 13.4 or so. In that car, I lost only once (to a 300ZX) and I raced hundreds and hundreds of times. Even the cars that are fast around here usually don't have fast drivers. I've beaten a WRX and Eclipse GS-X off the line in my 86. Most people over here are just really full of themselves and think they're the best thing in the world, so they never get any better. They just stand around talking about how badass they are and trying to pick up females with their "fly-ass Accord."

speaking of 'fly-ass accords', do you know, diety, if ppl in japan do the riceboy thing to their civics/accords/eclipses? Are there cars with 10 headlights and type r badges on eclipses and m3 badges on civics?

Hi. Please call me Tom, Deity is... weird, because you're referring me as a "god."

A Saab... I don't think I've seen one... Seems like a luxury car brand. You beating a WRX off the line in an AE86... that guy in the Subaru just has a fast car, probably can't drive the 5MT. Surprisingly, we don't get Eclipses over here. Funny... how people over there modify cars that we're meant for families and good gas mileage. Whatever, if they're getting some you know, with their "fly-ass Accord." Let them be happy. When they have their girls in the car, and you pull up next to him. Drop the clutch and beat his ass. The people here that really modify their Hondas, are the people that change it from FWD to RWD. Why doesn't anyone do that in the States? It's not that costly if you know what you're doing.

speaking of 'fly-ass accords', do you know, diety, if ppl in japan do the riceboy thing to their civics/accords/eclipses? Are there cars with 10 headlights and type r badges on eclipses and m3 badges on civics

The riceboy thing... I understand, but it's mostly the girls that do it. If a girl can't afford a Type-R Civic, then she will buy a conversion kit, the Type-R wheels, and the badging. Nothing crazy. What do you mean with the 10 headlights thing? Is that serious? Because if it is... people there suck... I've seen the BMW Z3 fender things... waste of money. It was a phase, nobody does anything like that due to the fact that you will be laughed at and called a moron in Japanese (doesn't sound pretty). People actually do stuff like that? Wait until I tell people how riduculous some people "mod" their cars. What kind of car is that? Oh it's the limited edition GT-R Mustang (I saw a video on it... so funny). Kind of sad... actually it's really sad. I can see someone doing an M3 conversion on a Civic coupe. Waste really. I want to see pictures of these morons. If you can, post them on the "I Need a Ae86" post.

-Tom
