So my new ISP (SBC) doesn't have any of the better newsgroups. Is there a way arounds this (other than switching ISP's)? I realize that if I wanted to fork over 15 bucks/month I could subscribe to newsgroups, but I don't have the foggiest idea which of those to go with.

Personally, I use Astraweb. Their bulk download rates are unbeatable and they have great speeds as well. I paid $25US for a 60gb allottment of bandwidth that I can use over any period of time that suits my needs. I've used less than half of it over the past 6 months.

Their unlimited download 1mbit/sec plan is $10/month and $5 more will let you download as fast as your ISP allows :)

If you just use usenet for reading discussions, check http://groups.google.ca since it's free :)

Ok I've got a new newsgroup question.

I'm looking for newsgroup software that will open up multiple downloads, and has a preview pane for images. I also want it to combine split files into one listing. right now I'm using newsbin pro, which does all of those things quite nicely. The only downside is that it costs money.

I'm considering forking over the dough for newsbin, but first I wanted to know if there was something better out there.

If you're willing to pay you should give NewsLeecher a try (at least give the trial a shot). Does at least everything you need and is a lot quicker than newsbin (in terms of sorting articles and other management tasks, the algorithms in NewsLeecher must be far superior to those in Newsbin).

Take a look here for some more options.

Newsbin is your best bet. I use GrabIT now, but i find it's lack of text in the interface to be clumsy. Newsbin may be ugly, but it's at least workable.

The program is free, but you'll need a separate utility for your par/par2 files. If free is what you want, it doesn't get better than this one 👍

Which one, GrabIt? Maybe I should check that one out. I have a separate utility for par/par2/split files etc.

NewsLeecher rules, but they make it difficult to use it without paying, so if you're a pirate (arr), it'll be a lot less stressful to go with NewsBin Pro or one of the free ones ...

If you're willing to pony up the dough, NewsLeecher is well worth the price if you do a lot of Newsgroup downloading ...

Doesn't look like Grabit has a preview capability. Is there like a "download + open" option? Or something like that? Preferably I'd like to see the image as it downloads.

The cost is a little more, but www.easynews.com offers a web based user interface where you can download single files, preview thumbnails, and even select multiple files and zip to a single file for easy grouping downloads of articles.
