Next car or???

Hi all, forgive my newbieness.. I've been lurking this board for a while,.. playing gt3 for a month or so. I've won all the races I can with my current cars in beginner league, including the series championship(got a skyline for that.. which is what I was driving in the series so I sold it), and a few amateur races.

I have the mutang svt at about 700 hp, and the skyline v spec II 34 at 564 hp and 250,000 credits.

My question is should I buy a new car to be competitive in the next level, or beef the $%^& out of the skyline? Or both? And,.. if I get a new car, what does anyone suggest?

Thanks in advance.. this board has already been a big help in my choice of the skyline to get me this far!

Well, I personally would not upgrade the Skyline, because its handling leaves much to be desired. I would probably run the Amateur League European Championship or American Championship to get, in order as I listed the races, a Vertigo Race Car or a Camaro Race Car. You easily should be able to win both of these championships with your Mustang. Win first place in the first four races, and then use the save/reload trick to get the Vertigo/Camaro Race Car. That's what I did, and it worked very well for me. And the best thing is, you can run the series championship again and get the "random" selection of cars again! So, basically what I'm saying, is that this is a great way to get a lot of money. I know it is pretty cheap, but that's what I did and didn't regret it. Good luck!
 
I'd have to agree with jamxx. Your mustang (or skyline) should be able to win most of the races in the amateur league. going through the am. league gets you plenty of nice cars, including that camaro racer, which can really haul.

Also, if you've got the IA license, try out the enduros. You might want to check the previews of the races to see what kind of car you're up against, but one you might look at is the Seattle race. Over there, your biggest competition will probably be a Vette. Then, there's the Miata enduro, if you've still got a Miata around that you can de-tune. Slap on some super-slicks and you've got the Miata race done with another 100k in your pocket.

Lastly, you might go look at the Rally section. If you've got an Evo sitting around, it can be tuned up fairly easily to win everything the in rally section, getting you plenty of cash and a brand new Escudo! :eek:

Well.....one more.....

If you're anywhere near 50% completion, you may want to head over to arcade and race the hard races, which can really rack up the percentage. Once you hit 50%, you get a brand new Vette, which can run through just about everything.

Well....those are my suggestions. Have fun with it, and tell us what you end up doing :)
 
Nah dude, for real, if you want to easily car it through the levels use a little over kill.

Nothing personal, but you're a newbie.

If you were a vet I would say hey, just use those cars and dog the competition, but truely, at the level you're at right now, it is better to use an easier car than it is to test your skills... I mean, you're still developing your skills, no need to test them yet.

What I suggest you do is buy a new car.

Either buy the corvette and use it at about 500 hp, or go buy a tuscan 6, or buy an rgt.

Any of those three will really get what you want done.

However, I should mention to you that the rgt is the best road car in the game.

Buy the rgt.
At 500hp it can smoke the competition.
At 1100hp (which it can reach), it will smoke almost anything.

Hi, Bill S, and welcome to GTP! Nothing wrong with newbieness in itself - it's the behaviour that counts and so far you're acquitting yourself just fine!

I wouldn't put any more power into your current cars, because you're bumping into the reasonable horsepower limits of both your main cars. In fact, the Mustang is a little overpowered and the Skyline might take a little more, but you're pretty close to it.

Both the posters above have offered excellent suggestions. You'll find that having a race car or two in your garage can really help - racecars, horsepower for horsepower, are faster and more fun to drive than duded-up street cars once you get to the 500-hp range.

Also, it's no fun when you just cream the competition. Amateur is the toughest level, though, because the AI cheats the worst and gets the most boost.

What else do you have in the garage? I cast a vote against the C5-R because personally I dislike it very much. But the Vertigo is wonderful and the Camaro is pretty good. The CLK Touring car would be a good prize to go after as well, or the Astra Touring car.

At the point Bil is at, I would concentrate more on aquiring cars for specific races. The Cobra and the Skyline may aquit themselves well in many of the Amateur races, but as mentioned previously, aquiring one of the touring cars might be a better bet. At the HP levels required to be competive in the Amatuer series races, handling becomes more of an issue.

I have been cheating lately and using the F090/S for many of them. Damn car handles so well and is so fast it isnt even funny. But since I am just going for completion right now, I guess it fits my purpose just fine. I have noticed that the practice with the faster F1 car has improved my driving in slower and heavier vehicles as well.
 
Thanks for the advice! I checked out the rgt.. 160k.. whew! How much will I have to upgrade that if I pick it up?

I decided to go and use the skyline for the am league turbo races to see how it does. I easily won the first and third race... but kept getting beat at the LAST second by another car in the test track, even though I was ahead the whole race. So I upped the hp of the skyline to 617 and finally won that one.. the prize was Mines lancer evolution worth 30k credits. Should I keep it and use it for rally? (I have the license). I had a lancer and put dirt tires and a couple of upgrades on it and was not EVEN able to keep up with the other rally cars.

Added note, last week I raced the skyline in the second to last rally races.. (can't remember the name of the track.. but wet pavement) and I won the first two.. but in the five lap race, the other car just got too good by the end and I couldn't keep up. Maybe the lancer would handle that better??

neon_duke, I have to agree with you about the overkill, but sometimes it is fun to cream the competition. It does get old, though, and that's why I started my little semi-project in collecting all of the awesome slow cars. So far, the best thing I've done, in my opinion, is beating the European Championship with a fully tuned RSX with Medium tires. I'm sure that doesn't impress anyone; I know that you all are extremely good at this. Well, I'm gone for now! (How lame was that? :lol: )

EDIT: Just read Bill's last post. I'm gonna have to say to put dirt tires on the Mine's Lancer, but that's just me. I know it can be upgraded pretty well, because I had one and then sold it very stupidly, which I regret. And you probably don't win with the Skyline on that 5 lapper because of its handling. A rally car is a race car, so they would naturally handle much better. And even without that put into the picture, the Skyline's handling, as I said before, leaves much to be desired. This is my opinion. I'm sure other people have different ones, but I would stick with this.
 
Well, the RGT is always a good idea, but buying the car isn't always the best way to go. You might want to check out the prize car list and find where you can win it, then see if you can do the race with the cars you already have.

As for the rally...I guess I'll upgrade my advice....
You may want to simply win one of the rally 3-race things, then bolt a big turbo onto your prize car. I would suggest going for the Focus, Scoobie, Evo, maybe 206. If you leave the settings stock, your new rally car should be able to outpace the other rally cars.

The wet races are a good place to get a new Scoobie, but they get hard, especially in a really heavy Skyline. You may want to put this off for a bit until you get a nice race car. The Camaro racer should handle the wet races no problem.
 
I would use the Mines Lancer in the wet races. Start with about T5 tires and add parts from there if necessary. It's lighter and handles better than the Skyline. That will give you a rally car prize, which you can use to beat the next rally... and so on. I went through the whole rally section and just used the prize from the last series to win the next series. After using an Evo VI for almost all of beginner and about 1/4 of amateur, I decided not to run any given car in more than one series from there out.

The RGT in stock form will handle a lot of races, but unless you add power, don't go softer than about T3 tires. Add the race suspension and some race rubber and it will serve you well.
 
Any of the above good for endurance races? That might be a good place to make back some of what I will have to plunk down for the rtg...

My answer would be yes... sort of:D

Either of the two cars you have right now should be able to secure you a win at Seattle or the Last Roundy Roundy!

I guess I would recommend that you take on the Roundy Roundy (Super Speedway). Where it sounds like you are at in your game, the cars you can win there are probably most advantageous to your quest right now and the money is enough to secure you the RGT. Just put on some super-slicks and go be bored for about an hour. The worst you can do is a Tickford and the best you can do is a Clio Race car. Somewhere in between is the C5R and an F90-F1 car (Either of which is better than a kick in the pants too though I tend to agree with Neon-Duke about the vette. IMHO). Plus, you get the dough!! (Couple hundred large in Monopoly Jing Jang.)

Set up is simple... Pop or water (caffiene is better :lol: to keep your lids open), some chips maybe, pillow for your buttocks and some tunes.)

By the way... For what it is worth, I also agree with Go-Kents on the RGT. It and the Clio racer are two of the most fun cars in this game. (Setting aside the Vitz of course because that's a gimme.)

How is the Vitz fun? Blowing it up would be fun.

Yeah, 100,000 CR for winning the SS 150 and possibly the F090/S definitely make it worth his while to run the SS150 with the car he has now. The AI cars in that race are pretty weak compared to most even slightly modified cars.

And a good recommendation on the tires too. I do 20 laps easy on the T1 tires, and since the AI cars pit about every 5 laps, he will be running circles around them in no time.

Edited to add : He could even de-tune either car if he wanted more of a challenge. I wouldn't hesitate to take a stock SVT or Skyline into that race with T1s on. You would win by merit of a better pit strategy. Just like the Roadster Endurance.

My recommendation before he ran it though would to make sure he has acquired all of the licenses. I seemed to find a correlation between license and prize car awards ever since I finished the Super license. Might as well increase his chances, if possible, of getting that Clio race car or F090/S. One of the guys that posts over at the playstation.com forums in the GT section has run the SS 150 21 times and STILL has not won the F090/S. I got it the first time I ran it AFTER getting my Super license. I didn't bother to get golds either, I will go back and do that after I get a driving wheel.

I LOVE the Vitz!!! I did a game restart recently (actually did a couple of writeups on some of it) and chose the Vitz as my starter car. Why? Well, not cause I had to but cause it sounded challenging. Turned out to be a Blast!!! It forces you to rethink your whole driving effort, teaches you things about tuning you hadn't thought of before. All sorts of things. Go read Scrubbing Bubbles in the the Write-ups section. I even took it to Seattle Enduro and Pro FF and added that to the Scrubbing Bubbles write-up! (I know... Glutton for Punishment crap is coming my way now!)

The RUF cars are sweet and I gotta ask if we can have some 3400S lovin' here. We don't want to get my RUF baby depressed.

I once won three Vitz's in a row. One was puke blue (which i used for the Vitz races) and two were pink. That was a bad night in Taowulfland.

Hehe, yeah. I'm not into that kind of stuff, because I can't remember crap about the races I won.

Except for that one Laguna Seca Race... :rolleyes:
