NHL 10 - Can someone help?

I need some help with this game.

I love it but I pretty much know nothing about hockey so it makes it difficult to work a lot of the stuff out. I have worked out the formations.

The problem I am having with is defence.

I play online so I appreciate my opponents are all going to use different strategies.

I keep getting ripped open all the time in defence no matter what tactics the other team uses. I can't seem to defend the square pass, people just keep gettign tap ins once its squared infront of the net. Oh and breakaways.

This is probably just down to me being rubbish but I was wondering what the best defence is to keep it tight at the back.

Is this EASHL/online team play? Or a normal game where you control all 5 players? Your best bet is to keep your guys from running around out of position. Only switch players when it's necessary. Try toning down all your team settings, go with a less aggressive breakout and forecheck and that should help with breakaways. I get torched from time to time so I don't have all the answers, but these should help a bit.
