Nightmare corners for karting?

I have been experimenting with different race types and setups in arcade to try and find some fun and challenging races. Since the AI is far too submissive and slow for most classes of cars I turned to kart racing.

The good things about karts that make it more of an even match against the AI are:

> Difficult to handle in certain circumstances - AI obviously think so too!
> Slow enough to take most corners full speed - no out-breaking the AI into these corners.
> Fast enough to actually be fun to race

So far i've tried a couple of tracks set to ~ 20 minute race and with varied damage.

Nurburgring Nordshleife 24 hour - 2 laps - No damage.
Best position - 1st!

Trial Mountain - 8 laps - Heavy damage.
Best pos: 5th

Cape Ring - 5 laps - Heavy damage.
Best pos: 6th

Deep Forest - 7 laps - Heavy damage.
Best pos: 3rd

These races were alot of fun because there are certain corners where the AI have a chance of losing control. They don't always lose control though! Add heavy damage so that karts that crash must pit (damaged engine) or continue to race with minor wheel damage.

I thought i'd list some of the places the AI (and me) tend to crash. I'll leave Nurburgring for you guys to try out.

Trial Mountain: (2 places)

> Up hill straight after tunnel - was slightly surprised. Fine as long as not turning.
> Last corner before pit straight - not surprised.
> Corner before pit entrance. - Rarely but it does happen.

Cape Ring: (3 places)

> First left hand corner after the S-bends after the first corner - lose control after hitting curb.
> The long winding section after the hairpin after the corner above - again hit curb. (AI only :D)
> Last corner before the hairpin before the very long descending left hand corner - yep curb again.

Deep Forest: (1 place for AI, 2 for me)

> Right hand corner before first tunnel. (AI and me) - uneven ground.
> Descending right hand corner after second tunnel. (AI don't seem to care) - tricky due to bumps again.

My least favourite corner of these is the last corner on trial mountain - really horrible especially at pace. It does make for some fun races though and most importantly races that aren't EASY to win.

I'll try some more at some point and maybe you guys could too. It's alot of fun just make sure there is at least one difficult corner (for you AND AI) and set the laps to something generous - after all it could be you pitting in.

Good to see someone else that karts. ;)
G's much more fun online with other humans though.
Especially when you have a good group of buddies.

No fun at all when they crash like that right in front of you.

More than challenging, it feels so random.

Well if they consistently kept crashing then it would be easy to win. I haven't found the race easy yet. Some of them don't crash at all.

P.S. Looks like fun to me :D

One of the few things in the game I'd actually call fun. I always find it hard to find a decent online lobby though, but the racing's brilliant when there's a decent one hosted. My best races have been in the private lounges though, 1st-4th finished within 0.057 in one race!

+1

I wish someone had a good kart series on GTP.

Am I wrong?

There are various series around that are karting. Some on here (GTP), some on external websites (like myself, which went pretty brilliant). There was definitely a karting league thread here on GTP if you're looking for a quick fix, in the online racing section, but can't remember where it went.

There are a few corners (back on topic) which seem to have annoying bumps to them, like the ones in Monaco (right turn before the third straight), and London (the longer sweeping corner after Trafalgar Square bit).

The "centrifuge" (big banked spiral) at Cape Ring will just screw your kart over without notice...
