I've been on a few forums where if you make a post and someone posts while you are typing (this would only apply if for some reason you used the advanced editor unless there was a way to make it work on Quick Reply), a box comes up saying that so and so posted and it asks you to review your post and make any necessary changes. Any way this could be implemented? I always like that so I wouldn't have to go back and edit.

Or you could use the quick reply, make your post, then click on advanced before you click on post, scroll down to see if there are any more posts. If no more posts, click post. If more posts, then feel free to edit before posting.

Even if you are on advanced, click preview post, then scroll down to check.

I pretty much always do one or the other anyway even if it is to only check that my post is OK before posting.

The PURE forum has this feature. Pretty nifty.

True, but I think this would take some of that work out of it. Not that doing it is bad, just sort of helps if it takes you by surprise.

Interesting, that works? I always preview my posts before submitting them, often several times, and I've never seen a new post appear on that page. Yet still there are often new posts that get in before mine when I do submit it. It happens rather frequently since I'm slow and longwinded and I actually proofread my posts(shocking, I know).

I'm surprised I've never seen this happen, I'll make a point of looking for it. Maybe I've just happened to not check the recent posts before submitting on those occasions when someone does post while I'm typing.

Yes, the latest messages will always be displayed there; it's no different than viewing the thread itself.

Like daan, that's also how I check to make sure my post won't be obsolete in a fast moving topic.

There's no such functionality like the one Slashfan has suggested in our current forum software, but it is definitely something I would consider implementing in the future.

Sounds good. I couldn't tell you how many times I've come across this and having to exit it and edit the post. Just makes the process quicker and easier.

Is it feasible to update or change the forum software to something with more features? Now I'm not saying to throw the current software to the wind & change to a software that's all buggy. Fancy features are nothing if it's all buggy.

I'm sure Jordan has mentioned, a few times, that he is contemplating upgrading to newer software.

Seriously? Well cool. He gets a virtual hug.

Yeah we don't know when but the site was supposed to get a more user friendly approach or something closer to a social network I thought. Not changing the way the forum works but definitely upgraded.

Can I just add something in:

If someone posts below your post, it is possible to Quote, copy/paste, then edit your previous post with the new information. 💡
That'll help you get through the days 'til Jordan finds his improved software.

Of course it is. ;)

 I see what TB did there!

The only issue is it becomes a bit disjointed, disrupting the top to bottom progression of the replies.

SimpleMachines forum software uses this functionality, and you're able turn off that feature on a per-user user basis. Basically, in the Advanced View (just like VBulletin), you get a warning that "x new posts have been created since you pressed Reply", or something to that effect.

I'm not crazy about it from personal experience, but it's probably both helpful and annoying on popular current-event threads.

The one I was referring to actually shows you the entire posts that were posted instead of saying just that so many posts were posted since.

Good idea though.

I thought of something that coulb be implemented, a tree'd/ninja'd emoticon, it could be a tree falling down to represent you have been tree'd.You would use them if you get tree'd and the shortcut could be :tree'd:
