Yes, this is real and here it is!

Nintendo just announced the 2DS, an entry level handheld that is a sister console to the 3DS. According to Nintendo, "the 2DS is fully compatible with all 3DS and DS games but does not include the ability to display games in 3D" and "includes all the functionality of the 3DS."

I think this is a terrible idea, the 3DS is already a 2DS in essence as there's a switch to turn 3D off. Nintendo could have just lowered the price of the 3DS, as I see this 2DS is a move to combat Sony's PS Vita (As of writing, both 3DS and PS Vita are $199) which with it's same price offers a lot more than the 3DS. The look of the console is hideous, I think it looks like a smoothed out piece of slate, if they really wanted to do this they should've kept it in line with the DS Lite at least.

So... It's the original Nintendo DS but without the ability to fold?

When I saw this on facebook I commented "How about we drop the screen at the bottom, move the controls and the buttons where the screen was, get rid of that camera, thin it down to the width of the widescreen LCD, and then call it a Gameboy HD."

Exactly. Why the hell does it even exist.

Seems like it was designed for smaller children. More durable design that can't be snapped, lower price-point, and no 3D effect (which is apparently unsuitable for under 7's). An interesting idea, but I'm not sure it'll sell...

It could be that Nintendo realized through market research that people have been playing 3DS games with the 3D off, and so they simply offered a more suitable option for those players. Heck, if I had a 3DS, I would turn the 3D off simply because of eye strain.

No one buys hand held consoles anymore, it's a shame the Vita and 3ds weren't released a year or 2 earlier than they were. People just use their phones now because they do everything as well as play games. I can't see why anyone would want this thing, if it's cheap then perhaps it's understandable.

I kind of like this idea. 3D games never work and may even be hazardous to your health, so I think it's nice to be able to ditch the useless 3D functionality and get everything else for less money.

...is what I'd say if I were considering buying anything from Nintendo.

Also, where's the ability to fold it in two for easier carrying, like the GBA-SP and other DSes?

Anyone that young with a 2DS is a spoiled brat.

I'm getting old....

This will sell a crap ton. You guys are forgetting its launching with Pokemon for crying out loud!

I think I might pick one up. I like my Nintendo games every once in awhile. (Don't judge me! :p) I really felt that the 3DS was very pricey and the 3D bit was beyond useless for me. Although, I'm not sure how I feel about the placements of the buttons.

This thing doesn't look comfortable to hold. Not to mention stupid looking.

It's a move to get into the price point that the DS Light was in where Nintendo was selling so many systems that there were complete sell outs for months leading into the holiday season. My only issue with it is that I think monaural audio is idiotic, just like it was with that awful cheaper PSP they sold in Europe.

This will have been in development for more than the week it's been since Sony slashed the Vita prices, the 3DS has been $170 since the massive price cut in 2011, and the Vita at this point is no threat at all to the 3DS anyway. Even Sony doesn't know what to do with it now.

So wait, they decided to re-release the DS in a new housing? Well it should be cheaper than the 3DS, maybe parents will replace a broken one with a 2DS.

I've played Game Boy 👍 when i was kid, it was 💡 awesome, amazing and mind blowing idea of a little device that could play many different video games.

Now after many years, after N64 and Game Cube and Wii, when i see this idea for 2DS 👎 i seriously hope this thing never cross Japan border, this is Playstation era and there is no room in Europe for game boy grand sons. :ouch: Nintendo lost it completely and they may share fate of Sega.

That's clearly why Nintendo can't even keep 3DS' on shelves, and most people have never even seen a Vita.

Nintendo disables Youtube comments/ratings on 2DS reveal

It would be too easy to write this off as an attempt at saving face after too many people reacted badly to the idea. Sure, a video with a ton of red marks around it and negative comments underneath probably wouldn’t have done much to help marketing the 2DS, but with over three million views, I can’t believe that was the reason. There’s no way that a significant enough portion of that number hated the 2DS enough to warrant turning off ratings.

Instead, it’s probably safe to presume that the commenters did what YouTube commenters do best: turned on the charm.

First Microsoft now Nintendo. What can Sony reveal that gives such bad impressions they are forced to disable comments? "We are listening to fans by not listening to them"....

Isn't this aimed at kids anyway? Maybe that's why they disabled the comments.

I don't see the issue, its a cheaper 3DS without the 3D. The 3D is really just a gimmic that doesn't matter anyway, the DS/3DS has some great games. I have a 3DS and usually end up turning the 3D off because it fries my brain after a while, wish i'd got the XL version with the bigger screen though.

When I saw this I thought it was fake. Seriously who would be stupid enough to call it a 2DS! Since when have you seen a non 3D TV advertised as a 2D TV  Instantly comes across as inferior and something you don't want to buy, seriously they pay marketing people to come up with this?

Plus, clamshell (a good idea) to large ugly scratchtastic wedge...
