Nissan unveils the Extrem at the 27th Sao Paulo International Motor Show

The Extrem is the first concept car from Nissan designed specifically for and produced in Brazil to underscore the company's commitment to the country where it recorded a significant sales growth

Nissan Design America (NDA) in San Diego, California, penned the small 2+2 crossover in collaboration with Brazilian designers

"We call it Baby Beast," said Robert Bauer, Senior Design Manager for the project at NDA. "We see it as an urban rally car, a tough little street fighter that can handle the urban jungle with agility and confidence."

The concept is based on Nissan's V-platform shared with cars like the North American Versa sedan and the global market Micra / March supermini.

At 3,850mm (151.6 inches) long, 1,765mm (69.5 inches) wide and 1,530mm (60.2 inches) tall, with a 2.450mm (96.5 inches) wheelbase, the Extrem is much smaller than the Juke (4,125mm or 162.4 in. long) all around.

Nissan pointed out that the Extrem is "strictly a concept car with no immediate plans for production", but added that elements of its styling offers a glimpse into future products, for Brazil and beyond.

"EXTREM suggests that exotic and exciting design need not just be reserved for expensive cars. It shows that innovative, sophisticated design can be made in a clever, attainable way. EXTREM is one of our answers to this possibility and it opens an exciting new chapter in our design relationship with Brazil," said Shiro Nakamura, Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer.

I really like the look of it.

The front just screams Hyundai Sonata for me. The Hybrid model that is.

Other than that, interesting concept. I wonder if Nissan is serving this in Brazil as a sort of test market?

I don't really like it. The rear styling doesn't work at all, it's just plain ugly. The front is okay, I guess.

Better looking than the Juke. I especially like this Extrem up front and on the sides. The rear... not so much. I'd rather the old Toyota RSC concept than this. If the rear were styled better, I'd buy one of these even as a concept.

It looks some guy that works at Hot Wheels got drunk and this was the result.

"Ugly as sin" is a pretty good description, I'd say.

I second the 'guy that works at Hot Wheels' comment; this thing looks like the sort of puffy fantasy car toy I was never interested in, mixed with modern, fish-face car styling.

On the other hand, at least it's not bland, and at least it's not smiling. If the hood didn't slope so much and everything behind the front wheels was hacked off and replaced with something half decent, I might like it.

One of the ugliest vehicles I've ever seen. At this point manufacturers will come up with all kinds of monstrosities just to make the cars seem "futuristic", "original" or whatever. Like others have mentioned, this abomination looks like an ugly toy. But that's how it is these days, if a car doesn't have random lines in the bodywork, strange color and material combinations and weird proportions, people will call it boring. So we get this.

On the contrary, there's definitely a happy medium. But there's also a point where you can have an extremely complicated design or an extremely simple one, and both can be beautiful.

The Extrem isn't beautiful, but nor would I call it the "ugliest vehicle I've ever seen". Like the Juke it's an acquired taste, but there are some neat details. The roofline is pretty special - in fact, anything above the centre line of the car would look great on a small coupe, so really it's only the proportions of the crossover body that make it look a bit odd. Perhaps the colour doesn't help either, but that's the risk you take with concepts. I've often thought that much of the hate for the Juke stems from that off-red they insist on painting it in - it's a much better looking car in white, black, aubergine... pretty much any other colour.

Still, there was a much more attractive small crossover previewed at Sao Paulo, the Volkswagen Taigun:

Based on the same platform as the Up, which means it should be both light and mechanically simple. And along with the Up and Scirocco, probably one of the best-looking Volkswagens of the last decade or more. Clean lines, great proportions, excellent details (the grille feeding into the headlight clusters, for example) and a simple, uncomplicated dashboard inspired by the Up. If VW make it, I'll be scraping together the money to get one...

^^^That looks millions upon millions of times better.

Both the Nissan and VW look pretty cool to me. With the Nissan, it kind of reminds me of the Toyota RSC concept, with a bit of the Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution roofline and rear lights.

Im just struggling to place it in a segment, the crossover coupe? It does in my opinion look less like an anime character than the Juke. I vote yes for this one.
