With all the brouhaha over the GTR's claimed 7:29 Nurburgring time, I just thought it'd be a blast to see, if, by dint of tuning, you can get the digital version on GT4 down to 7:29. Remember, the GT-R in Gran Turismo 4 was based off of computer models and early builds, and when the GT-R was first released, Nissan struggled to get it under 8 minutes.

The challenge here, is to create a car based on Nissan's early prototypes that will do under 7:30 at the Nurburgring. I've started trying, but I've been off the couch for so long and racing in the real world that my reflexes suck. Needless to say, I need help.

Limitations:
-Car in-game weighs too little. I cured this by adding 200 kilograms to bring the weight up to 1760. Balance it wherever you want, it's so much weight, it makes very little difference. I put it 10% rearward.

-N3 tires. I know it's been said that N2s are most realistic, But hey, Nissan dumped the Bridgestones for stickier tires on the 7:29 run (the Dunlop Sports), so it's fair.

-No power mods. With an oil change, the GT-R makes exactly 477 hp. Spot on for dyno estimates between 460-480 from published dynos.

-Only mods allowed are a racing suspension, brake balance, limited-slip differentials and active center differential, if such mods are available for this particular car.

So far, I'm down to 7:45, with extremely rusty driving. So I suppose 7:29 may be possible with a good set-up and better driving... but my 7:32 1000hp SL65 AMG ghost is so much faster down the straights, I'm finding it difficult to imagine doing it myself. The part I'm finding most difficult to cure is off-throttle understeer. Lift-off and brake-tapping oversteer in medium speed corners is easy enough, but at higher speeds, all the car wants to do is head straight for the walls, whatever you do (damn GT4 train-like AWD understeer!) and it takes some deft setting up to get the proper line through those sections.

I love the idea! 👍 I gave it a shot, and with ballast all the way in the trunk (+50) and the VCD set at 10 (I assume this is what you mean by active center differential? Ignore me if you mean AYC or something else.), and with no other parts bought, I got a sloppy 7'33 with a lot of offs. I can see a high 7'30 with the car set up as it is, but a low 7'29 would need some setting up, I think. Unfortunately, I can't even pretend I know the first thing about tuning, so someone else will probably reach the goal first.

my friend actually has gone through with this, and he got the exact time with the same gear ratios as the actual car has, same weight and all.. I don't remember what tyres he used though.

Hmmm, weight in the trunk? might be too unrealistic. I'd have to reset the weight restriction to +/- 20... since the production GT-R is around 55/45 though we don't know how the prototype is set-up.

7:33? Sobering... I've got to try and see if I can fix my driving...

So we're using the GT-R concept '01 on N3's am I correct Niky??

Just sidetracking slightly on the same topic, there's a magazine article that was done here in Australia by one of our car mags that showed with the 350Z GT4 edition that it was around 8 to 10 seconds quicker a lap on the game rather than in real life, and they compared the speeds going around every main corner on the track (karousel, etc.). The lap was around the mid 8.30's mark on game and IRL it was around early 8.40's.

If one of the other Aussies have that article as I can't find it online then maybe they could scan and show it for us??

I just got a 7'31.588, OLR-clean (If you wanted to make it really realistic, you could mandate all four tires on the track at all times), still with stock settings, except with ballast at +20 as you requested. I could take a second or more off if I really tried, but the barge-like understeer makes me not want to. :yuck:

I'm inclined to think that considering the overly easy physics of GT4, the tires Nissan put on the real thing must have equated to one of the game's S grades. I doubt even one of the "aliens" of this forum could get under 7'25, at least without tuning.

If people come up with tunes, I'd be happy to try them out to see if I can manage to get under 7'29; that is, if you post them here... 💡

I'll try tweaking the VCD this weekend, see if there isn't some way to cure the understeer there.

Yeah, I did set it to 10, and it does help some, but with 4WDs in this game, I always wish I could set it to 0. You should see your times drop quite a bit by lowering it all the way as I did.

Don't forget the timing between the official real time (7'29) and Gran Turismo 4 are different, GT4 time starts and finishes just before the corner, while the real life timing starts at the same spot but finishes on the last corner (GT4 last corner) and doesn't include the small straight.

So real GTR time of 7'29 would be high 7'30's (guess) if using GT4's start/finish spots.

Since my R35 has irreversible mods on it I used my R33 V-Spec with oil change and N2 tires. Record 7:59.xxx and mine was 8:11.430. I guess I will give the car sports suspension as it had improved suspension over the base model.

Here's something interesting to note: The R35 GT-R in GT4 doesn't have the ATTESA AWD system in place. Perhaps that has something to do with it's horrific understeer. Setting up the VCD probably won't do as good a job as the ATTESA system, no?

The R35 (concept) does have ATTESA, but only with stock diffs (front, rear and center).

So try stock diffs and see where it puts you guys.

Well, we at RVV and the Finns at MFT have a good suspension setup for it, so try them out and pick the one out which suits your preferences.
