BMW has been developing a CAMLESS valve system. It uses electric magnets/soleniods to open/close the intake/exhaust valves. The rumors that i have heard, it's suppose to be out in a future motorsport version of a BMW production car by 2006-ish. I remember reading about it a couple of years ago in the BMWCCA Magazine the "Roundel". At the time BMW had a working in-line 4 with that CAMLESS valve system. Think of the possibilities of an engine with that valve system!

It would be easier to make the engine high-revving. Another source for internal friction away (lowes fuel consumption). Variable valve timing needs no mechanical system. Possible with variable compression. and so on...

good fuel mileage and high power output in the same car. Meaning you could program the engine for good fuel economy for going to work during the week, and on the weekend when you go to your local autocross meet. Program the car to suit the event. With a Electo-magnetic valvetrain the engine's computer controls valve lift and duration.
