Forgive me if I missed this discussion, but I just saw that Rfactor 2 was purchasing a developer kit to begin working on support of head mounted displays like the Oculus Rift which is coming out later this year. Why won't iRacing?? Instead all these people are spending thousands of dollars to buy tripple screens or tripple projectors and instead could have a waaay more realistic experience for a LOT less $$ using head mounted display technology. iRacing seems to have the most realistic racing experience available, why not give its fans the option to have the most realistic way to enjoy it? (okay rant over)

Pretty sure I read somewhere on here that they have purchased a kit for development?

OOPS you're right, they did! i just re-read the list and I had simply overlooked their name on the list. Phew, thats a relief! Disregard my previous post :dunce::dunce::dunce:

um, thousands of dollars ?? I have triple 23"s, on a single monitor support arm that also holds my tv above it and 9" under it, even if you factor in the twin 2g GTS450 SLI video cards, I have maybe a total of $750 in to the whole graphics setup (including monitors, mount, tv, cards and DVI cables).

Better cards than I have - $300
3 23" Monitors - $465
Monitor stand - $87
22" LCD tv - $115

Total - $967 (I have amazon prime so free shipping), less than $1k to have whats pictured (and better video cards than I currently run)

There are other gadgets you can use instead of needing it to be resident in the sim, like 3-D glasses and TrackIR, all fairly affordable.

Like I want to strap some piece of plastic onto my head, actually I don't. I have triple 55" HDTV and I got a fantastic deal on them. The immersion factor is sweet. :)

I agree with you Left888, and if you strap that plastice piece onto your head. Would you even find your button box?

And only 110 degree of field of view.. clearly made for First Person Shooter games and not driving games. Even though iRacing will suport it, it will be like they suport touch driving.

Maybe we 3 screen user already want to defend our equitment, but seriously. This thing doesn't come close

When it is released in late 2014 I will buy it just to give it a try. By then iRacing will have the unit working with most set ups. More then likely the rift will have some major changes done to support all sim genres.

I see what you mean about the button boxes, but I imagine that once this thing gets rolling and other companies.jump on the badwagon there will be ways to track your hands as well. This means that since you will be using the drivers virtual perspective already, you will also take over the use of his hands and pressing a button on the dash will be done by extending your arm into space. It will be integrated with new systems based on Sony's Move and Microsofts continuing development of Kinnect.

@JDREAGON - I know you can do tripples on the cheap but to be able to match what this offers wont be: Full wraparound 360 degree full stereo 3D 1080p image with head tracking capability built in. Even 3 1080p 3D TVs will be more than $1000 and will still have bezels that retract from immersion. This is rumored to be priced under $500 when it comes out and will be the most completely immersive gaming experience you can buy (assuming all the current reviews are accurate).
It won't be for everyone, but it is a step in the right direction. And it looks like the folks at iRacing agree since they bought one to develop

If they build it into a full racing helmet with the visor as the screen, audio and a mic it would be awesome :D
Horribly impractical Way over the top I would imagine (unless you really, really want 100% full immersion) but it would be the ultimate Sim racing accessory.
Wives / gf's would think insanity has set in

If some how they could implement a race car environment, say even a custom environment that was 100% accurate I would consider it. Somehow I don't think that will be possible in this decade, perhaps the next decade. :D

Actually the device I saw was no bigger than a pair of snowboard goggles, so I was thinking about buying a cheap motocross style helmet (or any helmet that has a face opening large enough to wear goggles) and then I could have the whole experience as well. I am sure there is a DIY video about how to cut out ear holes in a helmet and mount headphones instead. The best part is that now I can have my rig, computer, and everything else in a small closet and I don't need a large wall for a projector, or a large area for tripple screens. My wife will definately be okay with me having a man-closet instead of a man cave!

EDIT: heres a link of to mounting speakers in a helmet. I like this helmet because it doesn't have a mouthguard so you can still drink a beer without taking your helmet off :)

I installed a pair of speakers (and a small amp circuit) in my motorcycle helmet a while back - pre iPod days - and it worked great.
Without having to concern yourself with actual safety I could see you building up a pretty impressive and functional helmet for iRacing. Give it a shot 👍
