2009 regulations as they currently stand incorporate a number of elements to slow the cars down, most notably cutting the downforce levels significantly,” explains Kobayashi. "Also, the banning of tyre blankets means that drivers will certainly have to be more circumspect as they leave the pits and this will be another area of tyre management where drivers will have to be vigilant.

The entire article from F1Technical can be found here.

I'm not sure if this has been covered, but it's interesting. This will indeed makes things a bit tricky.

This was proposed a couple of years ago IIRC. Don´t think it ads anything really, except that the drivers has to be a lot more carful on their outlaps. But it´s the same for everybody, so it is of little importance to the racing.

Except it encourages all teams to aim for as few pits stops as possible, eliminating one of the few 'passing' opportunities that F1s still have.

If only Montoya was still here, he was awesome on cold tyres.

Yes I know. I still remember his Champ Car championship. He was really good on cold rubber.

It was one of the first changes announced for 2009, actually - even before slicks.

Won't make that much of a difference - Bridgestone are designing the tyres with these rules in mind, and with aggressive outlaps, it'll only take them a short while to return to working temperatures. I suspect incidents involving a just-out car against a runner will be more common, though..

Well the new aero regs should make real passing more common so I’m not sure what you’re complaining about. :p

The slick tyres will make up for this easily. Just as they do for the reduced aero. And yeah, I remember this being at least rumoured a long time ago.

"We said no tire warmers!"

"These ain't tire warmers, guv, the tires are so nice and wide, they make great drinks tables... care for a spot o' tea?" :D

Actually, I'm for the idea... another expense removed from the budget... and a little more strategy and skill brought back into the game. Pace in F1 doesn't rely completely on tire warmers, but if your opponents have them, you'd be a fool not to use them. This way, nobody needs them.

Did they say anything about nitrogen canister warmers, though? :D :D :D

And the expense is recuperated with people flying off the track and crashing on cold tyres.

We had tire warmers last season, and that didn 't stop people from crashing and going off on cold tracks.

It's like the Indianapolis question two years ago. Of course you can make that turn safer. Just make sure everyone slows down. Did they want to slow down? No. So no go.

With the lack of tire warmers, it's the same thing. Of course cars exiting the pits are safe. Just drive them slower. As it is, you still need a half-lap anyway to get the tires up to temperature.

"These aren't tyre warmers, we're actually practicing for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. We expect it to be very hot, so we're getting the team used to the conditions."

"These aren't tyre warmers, we're just trying to gain a psychological advantage by stinking the place out with the smell of burning rubber."

"These aren't tyre warmers, we're just trying to outdo the other teams by having an open fireplace in our garage."

tire warmers=warm tires=safer
no tie warmers=cold tires=less sticking to the surface=less grip=another season like 1994

"These aren't tire warmers... we monitor the tire temps by internet, and there's a flamewar going on between Porsche and Nissan at the moment.. "

"These aren't tire warmers......they're heaters to keep the mechanic's feet warm. It's just co-incidental that they're all pointed at the tyres."

"These aren't tyre warmers ... well, actually, they are, but they aren't the tyre warmers you're looking for ..."

[/Jedi mind trick]

NO F'ing pit crew?! I'm at college studying with an ultimate goal of working in a formula 1 team as a mechanic / pit crew someday

Hahahaha! The drivers has to get out, refuel and change tyres all by themselves...

Perhaps they could introduce a spec pitcrew to go with the Cosworth engine deal and tender the contract out to the lowest bidder. I can see it now, Kwik Fit would win the contract and pitstops would go up from 7.3 second affairs to (*sucks his teeth*) probably about five or six hours mate. Then they'll over-charge you for your tyres and badly balance them then insist on replacing you've CV joint boots.

Is there anything to keep teams from leaving the tires out in the sun?

In the future the sun will probably be classified as a tire warmer. In which case, Bernie will want all tracks to be converted to indoor arenas.

2010... no pit crew FTW! :dunce:

Bernie needs to stop doing the crack okay!

Robin

That would be ironic, seeing as refuelling/pitting was re-introduced in 1982 during Ecclestone's rule of Brabham (though he didn't suggest it, but it would still be funny).

i know that was ajoke but it made me really wonder what an F1 race in an indoor arena would look like.

They couldn't ever fit it, though. But yeah, go-karting. The cars themselves would look like they did at Singapore...
