No Tranny?

Hey everyone... When playing the GT4 Toyota Demo, I noticed that, judging by sound, there doesnt seem to be any transmission in either car. What I mean is that there is no sound of gear changing... so it sounds like the whole transmission is one single gear... anyone know the story behind this?
 
Well if you look at Toyota's web site you'll notice that the Prius is a 1-speed car. This is probably mostly due to the fact that it uses the electric motor to move the car and the combustion engine is just to recharge the battery on the fly along with the the whole wheel thing.

On a side note: Kinda makes you feel weird doesn't it. Not having to shift nor hearing the rpms go up and down. In real life as well as the game you can be in a situation where you're on the gas and you hear nothing but the road which I think is super cool except that I still love the sound of a strong engine.
 
That's just like in Gran Turismo 2 with the Prius there. The thing that pissed me off the most was that you couldn't upgrade almost anything about it. You're stuck with the current power of that thing. So you can... oh, by the way, with its power, it can race the Lightweight K cup in GT2. I mean, if you could tune the transmission to make it run faster and give it racing tires, it would have been a sleeper favorite!

Richlander, you're almost right about the Prius.

I've driven one here in the UK, and it's electric only below around 25mph, then the motor kicks in. If you floor it off the line - even though it's not particularly fast - the engine starts straight away, with the electric motor giving it that boost off the line until the engine's running, once you're moving the energy taken from the battery gets replenished by the motor. I don't know if the Japanese version and any others are a different configuration, but it's really clever, even if it does seem like one of the least popular cars in Prologue...

It's really cool trying to drive the thing smoothly to try and get the battery meter up to 100%...

And it's funny you can enter it in the K-Cup in GT2, it's bigger than a Ford Focus!
 
its not exactly 1 gear, even though you won't feel it shift.

a few cars in GT4:P use a CVT - constantly variable transmission. It provides an infiniate number of gears, by using two cones and a drive chain that slides along it. When you floor it, the shortest gear is used, and then the gear ratios slide upward as your speed increases. This is why your RPM stays constant while your speed changes.

What makes it a hybrid is that it has electric motor / generator between the engine and the transmission, and in certain conditions the electric motor aids in producing power (such as in acceleration), while in other conditions it regenerates power like a giant alternator (braking, coasting, or cruising.)
 
I always said that GT sound wasn't progressing enough, it's still the same as it was in GT1....just listen to the engine sounds of GTR demo and you'll know what i mean. :sly:

Well it's new to me, apart from some select motorsports I don't read about that much in the way of car developments.
