GTP Karting: Yorkshire

Update: 26-07-2011

Track selected.
Poll for event type
Dates for confirmation set.

Please feel free to plug this at your next GTP event...

Parkwood is going to be the track unless I get a major backlash. Reasons being: It's easy to get to by public transport and cheaper than most. Points about Teeside are noted, and it does look awesome, but it's a logistical nightmare for many of the people I know since very few of them drive (myself included).

Prices are £40-60 (see Poll).

Now we just have to decide what event type we want (see poll).

Provisional date is Saturday 3rd September 2011. I'm looking to get this booked in the next 7-10 days to avoid disappointment. I have contacted the venue and they need the deposit in full well beforehand. I'm willing to front this as long as I get it back at the event. Minimum for the kind of numbers we're looking at is £180 up front, so please PLEASE confirm as soon as you can:

Confirmation Deadline is Wednesday 3rd of August as I'll be booking on the Thursday.

I may be able to amend the booking, but this isn't guarunteed.

There will be a few of my friends from Leeds there. Most of them are karting novices, so we should have a good mix of skill levels. I'm hoping for numbers around 15-20.

Interested Parties:
  • TheCracker
  • Vexd
  • Famine
  • Jondot
  • Neal
  • Stevisiov
  • Aldo
  • Roo
  • Stotty
  • Digital Raver
  • SureBoss

PM me when you decide what you're doing, I'll come down and show you how weight is a disadvantage......

:irked:👍

That Leeds one is round the corner from my old flat. In the middle of nowhere in every other aspect, mind.

Never been karting before, slightly terrified. If you happen to end up in West Yorkshire I might turn up with a cup of tea and watch, mind.

I'd be up for it so ditto what TheCracker said and PM me if if goes ahead. Also ditto what VEXD said re weight.

^These.

One of the reasons i'm not keen on indoor tracks. With so many slow, tight hairpins and the usual slippy surface, getting a kart back upto speed when you're bigger and heavier is a real issue. You can't carry any corner speed because the surface is rubbish and the engine just bogs down when you can finally accelerate.

I've been to the Leeds one Jon, it's pretty good. The cross-over/tunnel is fun, but like most indoor tracks you only get 2 or 3 quick turns and the rest are painfully slow and frustrating.

The Teesside one is sort of Yorkshire (North Yorkshire), outdoors and calls itself the world's longest, fastest kart circuit...

Looks fun. Plenty of big-balls stuff 👍

I see the first post is updated 👍 Put my preference down as Parkwood though.

I would be well up for this but there is a less than 0% chance that I would be able to get a lift down. :indiff:

You could talk Daan into it but if he asked for half the fuel costs you might as well get a flight there :p

Are you thinking of a weekend or week day night? If it's a weekday night/afternoon I could likely make it by combining it with one of my twice monthly business trips to Harrogate.

Personally, I prefer outdoor and twin engined karts if at all possible.

I see some are getting their excuses in already... just cut the pies and beer out boys if your worried about weight ;) Last time we ran this (the link Roo posted above) I was far from the lightest (around 85kg) and still managed to beat the 60kg crowd :D

 His truffle powered RX8!

It would only work if his Disclosure check came back clean though...:dopey:

I'm up for this, Jhodas mentioned it to me last week. I have no preference as to where, my parents live near Middlesborough so even the Teeside one is good.

I've voted for the endurance as I assume you get the same amount of track time each but it's spread out and you get a chance to watch the racing too. Also I'll ask my brother if he's interested.

Stevisiov, where about in Cheshire do you live and would you want a lift?

VEXD, assuming Sureboss tags along how about Team Fat Bastard?

Being hopelessly indecisive, I'll probably just go with the majority. If we run the endurance race, shotgun being in a team with Stotty :D

3rd September is fine for me.

I'd usually go with Norfolk and Chance.

If this Stotty character turns up, that is exactly what we'll have.

Anyone who can overcome gravity, inertia and the general laws of physics that apply to motion and weight, must be naturally fast in a kart.

Mind you, I haven't seen Famine drive.
And I know Dan races Lotii, and he's not in the same league as my gut.
So there would be some competition I spose.

Only thing I'd say is: I'd drive further and make more effort to use twin-engines on an outdoor circuit than singles on an indoor.
But I know how hard it is to organise anything like this and have people actually turn up, so I'll go with whatever anyone else wants to do.

Let me know.

:irked:👍

Norfolk and Chance is my pub quiz team name...very apt.

Stotty's only fast in a kart because the engine's in the back, makes sense.

I didn't realise Teesside Karts had twin engines, I like the sound of that and as Famine says it is kind of still in Yorkshire. Also prices are similar to Parkwood but we would need 20ish people to use the full international circuit otherwise it'd have to be on the smaller national circuit although it still looks like a good track.

Also also I've changed my mind about endurance because I'd only make Famine angry if I was in his team and was crap, he turns purple and sets his dogs on you both of which are quite scary.

What do you think Jhodas and others?

I'm interested, but not a definite, but a possible. I wouldn't be able to give a definite until 2nd week of August or so.

Go with whatever, I prefer outside and flat, when we did the last one there was a ramp and my *cough* 19 stone frame didn't like it. kart was underpowered.

Edit: Also, no preference on what we'd do, GP, Enduro, whatever, go with the flow, etc.

Voted for the endurance race.

I'll start negotiations with the missus to get the weekend away ;)

I'll definitely be able to make it to Parkwood on 3rd September and have asked my brother if he's interested, what kind of start time are you thinking of? I'm guessing midday will be best to suit people travelling from the south coast in agricultural machinery.

Also how flexible is the 3rd August deadline in the OP for confirming attendance? Nige (Sureboss) might need longer to give a definite yes and I'd very much like to beat him or at least crash into him as he lapped me.

Sureboss, noted on the delayed confirmation. It depends on how flexible the venue is, although I think it's one group to the track so I doubt they'd object to an extra couple after the deposit. That goes for you too Neal.

Start time is yet to be confirmed, although Midday-2pm is most likely. It won't be an early morning or late evening session provided I can get the slot.

Just like to add I'm really happy with the response I've had so far.

Please be aware that there will be some complete karting novices present, including people without a driving license who have gone no further than watching the odd F1 race on a Sunday.

In short, be gentle! The quicker ones will end up at the front after the qualifying anyway, so you can duke it out in the race.

Next update over the weekend.

I'm gonna count myself out on the grounds that I'm slighty in debt and don't know what I'll be doing in early September... or any time at all, yet. And also I'm still a scaredy cat, but have fun & that :)

Although I won't be able to race (🤬) I will be able to come and offer encouragement if it's at Teesside but not at Leeds - I'll be far too pregnant by then to be hanging around Karting tracks which are 80 miles from home.
