Can anyone help me with this problem.......

I am running xp home service pack 1 and I have norton antivirus 2003. I upgraded to service pack 2 and the status of norton could not be detected by windows security center. Aswell as this, (more seriously) auto protect could not be enabled (norton symbol with a red cross in the systray). When I tried to enable it, it would not work......As a result I did not dare venture onto the internet to try and solve the problem with NO virus protection, that would be susicide!

so I uninstalled SP2.....

Now I know that norton have released a patch to allow norton to be detected by windows security center but this is only for NAV 2004, 2005 not for 2003. They seem to not care at all about the 2003 product.....I have just renewed my virus subscription and I don't understand why I have not got the update to fix the problem.

Even if I did it would only solve the 'detection' bit, not the 'enable' bit! I have only heard of this 2003 auto protect not functioning problem on forums, not officially.....I don't know what to do.....I want to move to sp2 but NAV 2003 will not work AT ALL!

Please can someone help???......

Many thanks in advance.......Robin 👍

Auto-protect worked for me. Of course, I didn't use the security center, as it is pointless.

I noticed this when I upgraded to SP2 as well. I have NAV and Firewall 2003 as well. However, if you go into "recommendations" you can check the option that says "I have an antivirus program that I will monitor myself."

The windows security center is a useless pile of junk, IMO. I'd rather rely on Symantec's products rather than something released by Microsoft that tries to attempt to patch loopholes that were written into the code of its own operating system.

As for why your copy of NAV is not enabled, well that could be a settings problem. Have you checked to make sure it is set to run at startup under the options? I haven't had a single problem with NAV since I upgraded to SP2.

I did that too ^

I've got NAV2002 and it works fine with SP2 installed.

I have XP Pro with SP2 and NAV2003. It's working fine, but I also told the Security Centre that I woul dmanage A/V myself.

The failure of the auto-protect to run is down to one of two things: It is failing on startup (you should be able to determine why by looking in the Event Viewer); or it is being disabled by a virus. I have seen this in XP Home. What you need to do is hit F8 as soon as the system starts to load XP, and start it in Safe Mode. Run a full system scan using the Norton application, and it should locate and delete the virus.

Thankyou to all of you for your replies, it is a mystery to me why NAV 2003 just did not auto protect when I upgraded from xp home to sp2, it must be my because of my individual setup.......I will have a go at all that you have recommended.......thanks again :) 👍
