Was talking about extreme sports in the shop the other day and I chose drifting as my favorite, some dude popped up and got all roudy on how drifting was for pussies and what-not. Turns out they guy thought I was refering to some water sport. It hurts me that I have to educate people... anyone else have this problem in the work center or classroom?

no one understands what i say in class and noone knows about it but me ^_^

yea it does suck for people to misinterpret the things that you know are willing to die for... but hey it's their loss

hmmm... please don't drift while you have ppl in the car, its dangerous....

Cars are passenger vehicles, drifting with others in the car is the ONLY way to do it. Think about it, drifting could take over the world by instilling fear into the heart of man.

my brother street races in South Dakota, he drives an insanely powerful eclipse for some rich guy that owns it, and he thought he was all that, till he came down here and I took him out drifting, he just about shyte his pants. Great stuff. Drifting with other people in the car will either scare or amaze them, and either way, its one hell of a joy-ride. I love drifting, whether I am driving or riding, its still a trip. There's a bunch of white trash ricers that live across the street from me, I'm dying to take em out to the track and show em what its like to be sideways ^-^

Drifting with other people in the car is pretty damn stupid, especially if they don't know about it. What if you crash and they get killed? What are you gonna tell their parents? Errr, uhhhhh, I wanted to show off and I uhhh, crashed.

Well, not having anything against drifting, I have to ask a few questions and make my statement.

First of all, it has been my opinion for a long time that competetive events which the winner is chosen by a judge or judges should not be called a "sport". Sports, in my opinion, should be judged only by scientific means. Take running as an example. The winner is chosen by who crosses the line first. In car racing it is the same. In football / baseball / basketball the winner is the team with the most points at the end of a given timeframe.

Beauty contests are not sports because the winner is chosen by a pannel of judges. I believe gymnastics, though athletic, should not be considered sports because they are judged. A person's opinion should not be the deciding factor.

I don't know what to catagorize these events as, and there are quite a few. Most all the "extreme sports" are judged events. Freestyle motorcycle, BMX, skateboard, snowboard, gymnastics, diving, syncronized swimming ...

So my question is, how is the winner chosen in drifting competitions? Is it a race, or is it a judged performance of style and such?

You also need to define 'extreme'. Skateboarding isn't extreme to me, but it seems to be number 1 in the catagory. What makes an "extreme sport" so extreme? Just that it's new? Or maybe the likelyhood of acruing bodily injury.

Heck, I'm going to make a new sport. "Speed Crocheting". It's extreme because I said so.

Yes, please try to keep it to yourself. I only drift by myself or with a certain friend in the car. He demands it though.

Well in a sense I drift with another friend also but we are in different cars, he drifts with his Camaro. ;)

actually that sounds like a good idea

Alot of the kids in my town have barely heard of drifting. Some kid in my class found a video on the net by accident. Now he thinks he is the drift king or something. By the way i drive a FR and am in no way a Ricer. I wish i could have an 86 though.

So, what I gather is that you're mad at something or someone, but I'm not sure what you're trying to get at Street Fighter

If you looked at the link, you may have noticed that I was whined at by Ethix101 because my thread wasn't in the Drifting & Other Motorsports forum, which basically put an end to the 3 page argument over whether drifting was a sport or not.

Then I see this..

Trust me, drifting is as extremew as it gets in a car. Damn, i remember the first time i did it, scared the **** out of me.

So what you're trying to say is I'm to blame because you read every thread on the board?
