I enjoy GT5 for fun but have only played offline. I'd like to give online play a try.

The thing is, I'm not good enough to race in a 'clean' race. I'm sure that somewhere along the line I'll brake too slowly and rear-end somebody. I'll also probably spin out at some point, taking lots of other cars with me. I wouldn't intentionally try to dive like it's a demolition derby but it would probably seem that way to opponents who are expecting 'clean' racing and looking for a sim type of racing experience.

Is there a place that a newbie like me can go to enjoy some online competition without irritating other drivers just because I'm not very good and don't really know what I'm doing? My offline A-Spec level is 28, with 92 wins and a 19% game progress. I've driven 4,055 Km and own 45 cars.

i think you're confusing "clean" and "no contact" a bit. in clean racing lobbies sometimes contact happens, its unavoidable in certain circumstances.. for example, i was driving in a lobby with a driver who wasn't that great, probably a little above average but not what i'm used to racing with (i'm not the best driver in the world but can consistently get into the top 300-500 in the seasonal time trials) and going into a corner he hit the brakes wayyyy too early and i tried to avoid him but accidentally gave him a tap. it didn't cause a crash or anything but it did bump him off of his line a tad and i know personally that since i knew none of the contact was intentional that it was OK and he agreed
so what i'm saying is, as long as you're trying to avoid people and don't intentionally ram people or knock them out of the way, you should be fine in a clean lobby with no or little complaints

Thanks SicKmcNasTy. The thing is that before posting my question I read the complete thread entitled, "What is clean racing?" and it sounds like not everyone is as tolerant and flexible as your reply indicates. I don't think I'd want to enter a 'clean' forum based on what I read in that thread. Are there places to race were 'rough' racing is allowed and expected?

Lol, love the thread title. You don't have to be scared to go online and give it your best, there's a million people that drive around with dirty driving practices, it'd be nice if all those guys were as respectable as you are... almost everywhere you go it's rough racing, which is why a lot of us experienced guys have a really hard time finding a good bunch of random people who are on the same page. Just go for it, it's fun as hell, I could recommend "Shuffle Racing" where all guys are given similar low powered cars, that's a good way to get into the groove of online play.

Just go online, start your own room with the type of car you like to drive or are best at, lable the room something like "Trying to be clean" or "Learning to race clean", something like that and that way people will know what to expect. After about two or three races, you'll find it's not that difficult, and your driving isn't any worse than most of the guys that show up.

Check out the CRAP thread in my sig...

Icymoose just race in clean rooms online, you will only improve if you are surrounded by other cars. Apologize if you mess up and don't get too discouraged if you get kicked, you know you didn't do it to be a jerk. Good luck.

Thanks to everyone who has replied.

Question for GTVirtuoso... CRAP rooms sound just like what I wass looking for. Your site says that to get to a CRAP lounge, "All you need to do is add the below PSN ID's and use the lounges therein." Can you help me more with that? How do I add another PSN ID to my esisting PSN Account? Do I do that from within GT5 or from the PS main menu? Sorry to sound so stupid. I don't think you mean for me to have to create a completely new PSN User Account but maybe you do.

For ConRollins... I like the idea of starting my own room with a name that indicates "Newbies Here". I'll give that a try.

For others... I joined a NASCAR race at Daytona but made a bit of a mess of it. I have always been using automatic transmissions and my Driving Force wheel was set so that the R1 was reverse rather than Shift Gears Up. I wound up stuck in first gear. The people were nice though and just talked me into moving to the bottom of the track and going around slow until the race finished. I didn't realize that the rooms were set for things like manual transmissions only.

Anyway, with all the help here I guess I'll eventually get it figured out. Thanks again.

add the Crap lobbys as friends on your friends list.
send a friend request to the 3 crap rooms that aren`t the enduro rooms & wait for them to be accepted, then click on them in your community tab in gt home & enter & have a blast.
Hope to see you in there soon. :)

What I've learnt is to anticipate, especially when braking for a corner. I know I'm coming up to a corner, so I prepare for the person in front to start breaking. Everyone has different breaking points, so don't assume that because they brake so late that you can too, as they have most probably tuned their car to enable them to brake later. It's always better to break a bit early than too late, cause lets face it, that's how 99% of the crashes happen.

I was like the OP, too afraid to make contact in my first few races and was getting destroyed as a consequence.

However, the most fun I had online was a nascar room, running at Daytona with everyone driving like lunatics.

I guess the main thing is just to find a lobby where everyone knows what to expect, whether that be 0 contact, or rough and tumble.

There was an amateur league floating around this forum somewhere, not sure where it went.

Also racing incidents are mistakes made despite your best efforts to avoid them. If you rearend someone just apologize and if you punt someone off track wait to give them back their position ahead of you, even if others pass you both in the process.

A little "my bad" can go a long way. Someone will always be a jerk anyways but at least you did all you could.

As a member, I recommend CRAP, but I also suggest you jump online and just give it a go anyway. The worst that could happen is you get booted from a room for the day, and most good rooms will accept an apology from a learning driver. Being conscientious goes a long way, and if that's not good enough for people, you don't wanna be around 'em anyway.

G'day cold one!

Yes you are more than welcome at CRAP.

Here is what you do:

Add me as a frind on PSN; it is not a requirement of CRAP but I can help you out more if you do it. My PSN ID is: Heathenpride

Go to the CRAP thread in the Q&A forum here and read the OP then add the following PSN ID's by friend requesting them, I suggest you add them all as we hold enduro races in the enduro 1 room and the second is overflow same with the casual races ID's, you may rarely use the second one but you never know when it will be required:

CRAP_CasualRaces - Use for all races (24/7) & tuning that can be done in-between races. No enduro's.

CRAP_Races_2 - Second casual racing ID, overflow lounge for room one or if room one is having server issues.

CRAP_Free_Run - As name suggests this is for free runs NOT races. Extensive tuning and practice only.

CRAP_Enduro_1 - Main race lounge to be used on race days for the race and qualifying. This is also a back up and overflow lounge if required.

CRAP_Enduro_2 - Main race lounge to be used on race days for the race and qualifying. This is also a back up and overflow lounge for our if required.

Cheers mate, I think you would totally enjoy our group and we would be happy to have you on board :)

Oh PS, I will add your FR's when I receive them if they come in tonight, send me a PM on GTP when you have sent them and I will know within a few minutes.
HP

EDIT: I will add this too dude. At CRAP we all know roughly how experienced each other is and we are respectful of whether you are brand new or a total legend and can race with the best, you can make mistakes bro we expect them (I make them on the reg but i AM improving too) plus we are a casual group and we dont get all a/\/al about that unless you are one of our experience guys being an idiot (hasn't happend yet but a couple of nameless ones have gone close) so don't sweat it bro :D
