Hi everyone, I just got a enw internet provider, which is far superior to what I used to have, its supposed to be blindingly fast at 5mbps, But I installed it on my computer, everything has been terribly slow, even though my computer meets the requirements and when clicking links, it takes forever to load up. Also, its never been this slow until I got the internet yesterday. Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

Cable or dsl? If you're on dsl, you might just be too far away from the routing station. If you're on cable, it could be that you're in a busy neighborhood. If you're on DSL, it could also be that they haven't upgraded you to the updated digital lines yet.

www.dslreports.com and do a bandwidth test. If the results are low, give the ISP a call.

Sounds like you may have picked up a virus since your computer's slowdown only started yesterday. Make sure that you have your firewall up:

Control Panel > Network Connections > right click LAN or whatever connection you use and go to properties > Select the Advanced tab > check the top box (XPSP1) > XPSP2 only: hit settings > select on > hit ok.

XP's will not work fine, it basically lets everything through. If you don't have a firewall, you could try Sygate's free one.

If the connection is DSL, the condition of the cables inside and outside could effect the speed.

I don't think XP's firewall is a hardware firewall. I think it is software. I use the firewall on my router, which would be hardware.

That's what I ment, get a hardware firewall.

My DSL is not terribly slow. But i think it is. My cousin got DSL from SBC(just like me) and he can download 700mb under 2:30. It takes me around 6 hours! My download speed is around 36Kbs per second. His is somwhere in the 100's. How is this? My computer is faster than his. My connection has always been like this so its not a virus. On SBC's wbsite its says DSL should download 10mbs within a minute! Mine is not doing that.

It depends on the quality of the lines in your neighborhood and your distance from the repeating station. Call the company and ask them to run some quick line tests for you. It also depends on where you are downloading from.

OK, for some reason my computer got lightning fast. Actually, I think it got extremely fast because I installed like 30 automatic updates.

Maybe the fact that you're living in a poorly managed area of the city has something to do with it. Oh wait, your computer sucks. But seriously, the types of connections in certain areas of the city are horrible I've heard. Could just be a geographical problem if your internet slows down again.
