PSP (PlayStation Portable) v4.00 Update

+ Posted by Eric Lempel // Director, PlayStation Network Operations

I wanted to give you all a heads up that a new PSP system software update, v4.00, will be released soon, adding Google Internet search directly to the XMB (XrossMediaBar) interface.

This new upgrade replicates the Google Internet search experience, delivering the same search results that you’d get at www.google.com. And with a search history recall of 20 items, Web searches couldn’t be easier.

After you download and install the firmware on your PSP, click on the XMB’s Network icon and then the new Internet Search icon. Enter your keywords and then let Google’s algorithms do the work. You’ll need to be connected to the Internet via a wireless access point or Wi-Fi hotspot. Googling something on the go has never been more convenient on your PSP.

Another new feature delivered through the 4.00 update is the ability to change viewing speed during playback of videos stored on your Memory Stick PRO Duo, so you can speed through or slow down what you’re watching. To do this simply press the up or down directional buttons while playing a video. Enjoy!

So, change video speed and Google searching from the XMB? That doesn't sound like an X.00 update, rather a 3.9X update.

A lot of people were hoping for the PS Store direct connection that was promised a while back.

And after reading the comments I see a lot of people are having trouble with Remote Play not connecting when away from home. I thought it was just my lower end Internet connection, but apparently it is common. I wondered, because I could go over the Internet at home.

I can only assume that there is more hidden in this as they never give the full details.

I'll update this thread when they actually release it.

V 4.00 is out, just installing it now, according to the waffle they say is included in it, is what has already been posted, but if I know Sony it will have hidden stuff inside.

Joystiq had a funny report about how they Google searched with the PSP to find what the update did, got their own story, and then realized they just used the new feature.

So, this is basically Google Toolbar for the XMB?

So far unfortunately it looks like thats the case. Just a lame ass google search from the XMB, why put effort into things like this, why no in-game XMB for PSP???? this is getting pretty rubbish from Sony, why cant their programmers pull their fingers out and give us what we want.

Well, I installed this last night and I think that meh sums up my thoughts pretty well.

It is basically saving me the step of pulling Google up from my browser bookmarks.

I'm still waiting for GPS and built-in PS Store.

heh. and im still running 3.80 (which is what it came installed with).
As newer games come out they require upated firmware, which usually comes on the disc.

So, unless you really want the new features you aren't missing anything.

I wanted to give a quick heads up to everyone that a new PSP firmware update, v4.05, will be released soon. We know that more and more of you are listening to music on your PSP, and this update will add new visualizers for music playback, among other features. Enjoy!

These little bits of almost nothing are killing me.

I hope they have big news at E3.

they do realize people turn their screens off when listening to music, right? if they want to make it more usefull, let us connect to 3g/wireless isps so we can stream internet radio.

i wonder what the other features will be?

[edit - satalite radio would be another really good option. specially since, imo, land radio sucks.]
