Hello all and welcome to the results for week 7!​

Congratulations to all who managed to wrestle the CSL round in one piece, it wasnt easy!

NRS WEEK 7 - BMW M3 CSL

Congrats to Vtracing who takes the win this week with newcomer Jmgyro snapping at his heels for second place. Vexd takes a great third to round off the podiums this week. I rolled home in 4th and behind me some "drafting" seemed to be going on with Speedy Samurai, Kolyana, and Onlyme all finishing within 1 tenth of a second of each other , i can just see you guys crossing the line in convoy now , well done there for 5th,6th,and 7th places, great to see such close racing. Only another 0.5 behind was Goixoye for 8th and Steve57 takes a solid 9th, Soyfu just manages to hold off an attack from RedOak for 10th and 11th respectively. Hats off to everyone, great racing and great time submissions from everybody 👍

The CSL was indeed a tricky thing, i will as usual try to post some conclusions in here, my first observations were that the Semi race suspension may be by default stiffer in general than the sports, ie soft on the semi race might be more like medium on the sports suspension so bear this in mind when tuning week 8's Motorsport Elise, sometimes a softer set up works very well on the Ring.

Man that WAS close!!!! That's so awesome ... over six minutes around the ring and we finish within a tenth ... bumper to bumper stuff. Awesome 👍

I apparently made a mistake when submitting my results...I checked but I have already deleted my submission PM. My time should be 7'17.163. It doesn't look like it changes the results. I'm sorry. Even so this is still the closest I've been to Koly in he series....maybe Week 8 will be the charm?

Wow, I certainly wasn't expecting to win this one. I was sure someone would dip under the 7 minute mark.

For myself, setup wise, I decided to perform the chassis stiffening and the car felt slightly more solid compared to the standard car. Even if it doesn't work, I still prefer it from a realism point of view.

My setup (if I can remember it) was:

This was indeed quite a tricky car to drive, but I feel it's probably representative of some of the race cars we'll be driving later. At least with this setup I found I could control most of the slides that I got into without too much trouble.

I thought I might go into some of the reasoning behind the setup I used.

Firstly, with the spring rate I was hoping to get a compliant front-end to help the turn-in without it "washing out" into understeer as too much weight transfers to the front in the middle of the corner. I'm not sure I really succeeded.
There is a theory that the spring rate adjustments are reversed, ie. the higher the number the softer the spring, but I do not believe this is true. I simply think that if you stray too far on the front spring adjustment you will cause understeer. So, if it's too soft then you get too much weight transfer which overloads the tyres and they slide. And if it's too stiff you don't get enough weight transfer or compliance and the front slides.

Secondly, the ride height needs to be a little higher to cope with the bumps at the ring, and I generally like to have the rear a little higher than the front to create a bit of rake in the car. You all probably know about the effects of the ride height on the balance of the car front to rear so I won't go into it. Again, I did this to avoid understeer on turn-in.

Thirdly, dampers. I always have to remember that the dampers are simply there to control the springs. There is no point having really soft springs if your dampers are so hard they don't let the springs move. Conversely, ultra-soft dampers will not be able to control a very hard spring rate. Balance is the key. I try and get a good balance in the car by adjusting both springs and dampers until the car is doing what I want through a corner and then I try and adjust both front and rear either harder or softer (generally softer).

Finally, camber. You've probably guessed that I don't mind having the tail of the car move around. That theme continues with the rear camber figure. The rear seems to have a much greater effect on the balance of the car than the front, so you can dial-in a bit more security into the rear of the car by upping the rear camber. Of course, the trade off is the possibility of increased understeer, but if it stops you spinning at high-speed go for it.

Personally, I like to feel the car moving underneath me. I like initiating slight oversteer under brakes to be able to get onto the throttle as early as I can and power through the corner. And so I try and setup the car to help me with that as much as possible. With a different style, you need to set the car up to augment your abilities.
