Since this is my dream car I decided to see if I could beat the official Subaru time from Tommi Makinen on the Nurburgring Nordshleife. Which is 7:55:00

So I went in Arcade Mode, all assist OFF (exept ABS to 1), Sports Hard tire (since they are default tires, I'm guessing thats pretty much what they'd use for the official time.

After 3-4 laps, I ended up having 8:01:502. I think I could improve and go under 8min, probably 7:59 or 7:58 at best, but .. 7:55 never.

Then I decided to put my computer next to my TV and start the official video VS. my replay.

OFFICIAL VIDEO:

So what I noticed immediatly, car performance looks very accurate exept for top speed, the "real" impreza goes about 10-20km/h faster in long straights. My guess is that they did this lap with an near-empty fuel tank? Do you think the fuel tank load could give the car an extra 10-20km/h top speed (personally I doubt it, I think fuel will affect much more acceleration then top speed).

When we play in Arcade mode like this it seems like we never run out of fuel, does this mean the fuel sim if OFF by default? If it's OFF how does the game simulate the fuel? Does it make it as if there was no fuel? Half a tank? a full tank?.. there's no real way to know I guess. Sadly there's no way to test because we can't adjust fuel load in GT5.. bummer...

edit: If you look closely in the video you can see that to the far left of his dash there is a yellow light lit, which I believe is the low fuel light.

Top speed difference is most likely down to wind speed and direction.

I'd say it's close enough.

Are you hitting the rev limiter on the long straights?
If so, and if you have the adjustable transmission, go in a bump the gearing up to allow for more top end. That is likely what they did, as I know several manufacturers put either different transmission or rear end gears in order to get the higher speeds on the straight.
I also would be surprised if they actually used Sports-Hard type tires, I would think Sports-Soft would be more likely.

Actually I found this part pretty weird. I don't hit the rev limiter, in fact it's the opposite. In the long straight near the end (for exemple), I did most it just on the edge between 5th and 6th gear, I couldn't quite get enough speed to shift the 6th because there is a slight uphill. Just when it turns slightly to the left, the hill starts to descent I was able to shift to 6th for a very short time. (in fact I think it's the only moment I shift the 6th gear in the entire track)

I'm guessing I could shorten the ratios, but the goal of SUBARU's time are to make them with stock cars, I'd find odd for them to switch gear ratios.

The start and finish of Tommi Mäkinen's lap isn't on the same line though. Timer starts right before first corner while the timer stops right after the last corner when he hits the grass a bit. So he didn't really do a 7:55 lap, 7:57 or 7:58 probably if the timer was stopped at the same line as where it started.

Company's will do little tweaks to make themselves look good. Then not tell anyone, no way was that time done in a fresh from the factory subaru.

This thread made me to try a lap with the Impreza in sport hard tires, and after two laps I've done 7:55.002, pretty the same time Makinen has done. The first was just a "warm up", stopped the clock at 8:01.386, then I've obtained this second fast lap. It's pretty fun to drive!

If I'm mistaken, the STi he used was not stock. I recall reading they had installed a larger turbo amongst other things
