Oh dear, help urgently required

So, it seems there maybe some issue with my PS3. First thing I've done is backup my savegame.

It started when I did the penultimate set of seasonals. If I went to the used car dealership or the online dealership it would remain stuck on the GT logo. If I tried to quit it would do the 3 beeps, .meaning a reset was in progress.

So, last night I attempted to try remedial action. So I firstly uninstalled GT files from within the game menu. Rebooted and trousers, still the same problem. So after rebooting again I deleted the Game Data file, which was around 6300Mb. So now the game would need to reinstall and update the game again.

When I started the game it said about updating, went blank and then did the 3 beeps again. So I disabled my WiFi, to just try and get it installed, and it gave me the 3 beeps before playing the opening movie.

So, please help. Does this mean my PS3 hard drive is on the way out? If so, what's the best way to go about backing up the data and fitting a new one.

PS I downloaded, installed and played the latest PES demo without issue, it's only GT giving me trouble.
 
Is your GT disc scratched at all? might be worth giving it a clean anyway

Do other disc games play ok?

How much free HD space do you have?

The disc has a tiny mark on, I'll borrow a friends and check that. As to hard drive space, I'd never gone into that 'Game data' folder before so whilst I was in there I deleted loads more stuff from games I don't own/play anymore so cleared out around 45Gb.
